only ever carry 1 (my s&w cs9) usually anywhere from 3:30-5:30 either owb or iwb depending on what i'm wearing.
though if we are going somewhere new or in a less-than-good neighborhood, hubby also carries.

Anything and Everything
I feel sorry for a lot of you that have to carry and worry about where you're going or what you're wearing. Where I live(Wyoming). Open carry or concealed are both allowed without a permit. During the winter, it's easy to conceal a 10.5" 460 or 500. When it's nice enough in the summer, a j-frame in the pocket is more than enough for peace of mind. We don't have a lot of crime here, most of us carry because we can. Not because we need to.

Wow, I am not putting anyone down, but I have never felt the need to carry, let alone carry 2 or 3. As I age that may change, but once I became an adult, no one has ever bothered me and I have lived and worked in Miami, NYC and SE Michigan.

1. A full size Glock high capacity semi-auto pistol
2. A S&W 2" revolver as B/U (in case a S&W Forum member asks me if I CCW a "Smith" and also not to be kicked off the Forum)
3. A straight razor (just because)
4. A hand grenade
5. A cell phone ( to receive calls from my secret girlfriend)
6. A cloth sack containing all my meds
7. A GBS to find my way back home.
8. A walker

I carry one although if you feel better carrying several guns great. But I just dont see the point, you can reload faster than draw another small gun. Besides how many rounds do you plan on firing? Most actual self defense cases are up close and over in 3-5 rounds.

It is not alwayas the gun. Back in the dark ages when revolvers were in most LE holsters an officer tried to shoot a round of name brand full power duty ammo which contained only a primer. The primer managed to securely wedge the bullet into the forcing cone/cylendar gap. There is no clearance drill for that malfunction, one that was not caused by the gun or the opertor.

I was on the job for 30 yrs & carried a b/u daily, it only made sense. I no longer go in harm's way and am comfortable carrying only one, unless we go on a car trip. In that instance I always carry two, one J frame for my wife as a just-in-case kind of thing. Again, it only makes sense to me. Others can do as they wish and I offer no criticism.
People who offer their unwanted opinions when they see you or me reading a gun magazine need to learn to mind their own business.

In the mid-'80s our instructor, a former NYC cop, stressed having a backup and conducted training in ways that would force us to either use a backup or go through difficulties to reload or retrieve a dropped gun. I, of course, knew I would NEVER bungle a reload. Then I ejected a perfectly full magazine as I fumbled to drop the slide. While I was retrieving the magazine, the instructor was yelling "BANG BANG BANG!"
Point taken.
His words, oft repeated by others ever since, was that the best reload is a second gun and the best backup is a third.
Sooo, I usually have, ever since, two, and when conditions (clothing choices for my, ahem, reorganized body) allow I have three.

My dad drove a truck over nights in Miami's ghetto for 15 years or so and carried a snob nose .38, without a back up, for many years. It's saved his life on more than one occation.
It is everyone's preference but I personally don't see the need to carry many bullets or more than one firearm. I conceal carried a .38 snob nose for a few years, then recently purchased a .40 S&W SDVE as a second fire arm. Haven't concealed it, yet. I'm going to have to get use to the larger size gun.

I'll bite. What training did you receive that involved having to "retrieve a dropped gun?" In three (3) decades of LEO training I never had any such "training" and cannot imagine a scenario in which I would drop a gun or have one caused to be dropped.

My department has done training retrieving dropped guns & then shooting. We also train to shoot other ways as well. In cars, under cars, on our backs, upside down, weak handed, strong hand only. We have also been taught how to shoot long guns one handed. We are a 1,600 member department. It's 2013 and departments need to catch up with the times in training. There are lots of things that could happen. Fall down stairs or just trip & fall, perp knocks it out of your hand, gun grab, etc. How often have you seen turds get other things from officers (batons, flashlights, radios, etc.)? Two of the FBI agents in the Miami shootout lost their guns before the shooting even started.
To get back to OP's post, I only carry 1 gun off duty. I've finally gotten into the habit of carrying an extra mag as well. I always carry a knife.

I like a gun in my truck that I can reach during driving. Plus one on me.
Some people will probably poo-poo it, but I like my Bond 45 colt, as a back up. A 1/2 hole will change someones mind.
I don't think about how many rounds, as much as I do accessibility. I am revolver guy.

I feel sorry for you and your mind set. Sandy Hook was a small community as well. Deranged, crazy killers are EVERYWHERE (Yes Sir, even in wyoming) I carry to protect myself and my loved ones. And seriously can u really conceal a 10.5 " pistol well?? and be comfortable?

When people tell me you don't need a gun, I ask them if they have home owners insurance. What is the chance your house will burn down?
I like jacket pocket carry, cause you have it, but is casual.

I've been carrying a backup since I got a pocket holster for my M340PD a few years ago. It is always in my non-dominant (left) side pants pocket, and I literally forget it's there. It backs up a revolver or a Glock. Today's primary carry is a 2 1/2" M66-1.
Last year I got a call from a Presidential candidates campaign prior to the Iowa Caucuses. I carried my Glock 23 in a Glock Sport/Combat holster on my right hip, my Glock 27 in my Kramer Confidant shirt holster, and the M340PD in my left front pants pocket. Had two or three Speed Strips and three Glock 22 spare mags. Also had a "tactical" flashlight, and five knives. The candidate was at a book store, and I stood around looking very official. Even made the local news with me in the background. I was obviously wearing a suit, so it was easy to conceal all that hardware.
Mostly though, I just carry two.

I generally carry a 438 in an Alessi ankle holster as a backup. My primary varies depending on my agenda and mood for the day. Normally a Glock 26 in an Alessi shoulder holster, or SP101 with crimson trace grips in a Galco paddle holster. If I'm going to be in a "bad area" I definitely take the Glock.

1. Extend your personal space whenever possible.
2. Pocket carry a handgun, and keep your hand on it whenever your personal space is violated.
3. If you can't extend your arms without handing the gun to your attacker, don't be afraid to jam your revolver (This doesn't work well with semiautomatics.) into his/her pelvic region and shoot it dry. The result should be devastating.
ECS
PS. Just looked at this, and thought, "These people are going to think I'm a bloodthirsty old f*rt!" I'm not really! It's just that I've got arthritis, had an elbow rebuilt, currently have rotator cuff tendinitis and bursitis, and am a cancer survivor. I also carry a badge at work. It's just that I understand the physical limitations that we older folks can accumulate over the years and I am treacherous enough to work out how we can get around some of them.

It all depends on the situation. I live and work in a midsized town and violent crime is on the rise but at this time in my town I carry one firearm (642 with 2 speed loaders) Several times a year I have to make trips to a larger city where violence is the norm and multiple attackers are not unusual as well, then I carry a Glock 26 as my primary and my 642 in my pocket. It's not about convenience or even need but rather being prepared for the possible situation.

these days i carry 2. used to be 3 but my wife was starting to call me paranoid... 327 PC, and my old faithful 442 are my current EDC stable. i also carry an edged weapon, an esee izula II fixed blade. road trips add my glock 17 to the mix. the old adage of one is none, two is one, three is enough is mantra to me.

There have been a lot of these threads over the years...about carrying 1,2,3 guns and "stuff"........for those who carry more than one (off duty/civilian) ...... pictures we need pictures!!!!!!!!
I've had my cc permit for 35 years ( since getting out of school at 25) I've been a NRA rifle and pistol instructor; had a 30 man private armed police/security Dept. that I trained and qualified with; shot PPC, IDPA and USPSA
I just can't figure out where some of you guys put all this stuff...........not being critical ....... just can't figure out how you do it w/o something like the "dreaded" shoot-me-first Photo vest, fanny pack or assault pack! Out west maybe a horse!!
MY EDC since 1990 has been some form of 3913/14 (90% of the time)..in a Spark's IWB holster. Generally with one extra mag. (maybe 2), a 3" Kershaw lock blade knife and Streamlight microlight (single AAA) flashlight......... add my wallet, keys, money clip and change..phone... reading glasses........ my pockets/belt are full and
I'm carrying as much stuff as I want to..........in 2014 in suburban America.
Now all that being said......sometimes I will gun up to a 6906 or Beretta Compact with one or two extra mags (giving me up to 52 rounds)..........
Maybe a long gun in the car/truck (mini-14 w/ 1 10rd and 2-3 20 rd. mags.) ( Note: the Ruger w/ a 16 inch barrel, 10 round mag., Hogue gullie green stock and Weaver 1-3x20 scope is my low profile "black rifle")
To each there own, I'm not being judgmental; but I would like to see some pictures w/ all the stuff on body

I don't carry any back ups, though I have thought about it. If I were ever law enforcement, I would do a backup in a kangaroo carry vest, and then a derringer in my boot lol.

Well I suppose us guys carry revolvers don't need much stuff.
For one thing since our revolvers almost never malfunction,
we don't need an extra magazine. Four speed loaders fit in
my only shirt pocket. My billfold in one pocket and my backup
S&W 642-1 in my other front pocket. I still got two empty
pockets. My smart keys on my neck string, and no room to
store other survival items like pepper spray, and mace.
I forgot to mention I don't own an I phone, my cell phone is
a very small size old fashioned one.
But with the government turning loose all them criminals and
importing more of them, I guess I better start rethinking this
situation. Will I need a rifle down the road, and a fanny pack
to haul my ammo for it? Since this has been happening I almost never leave home without at least two revolvers on me.

You've never been in Wyoming in the winter have you? He could probably conceal an M1 Carbine easily and comfortably.

Bottom line my current life situation is such that I believe the hassle of carrying 2 guns outweighs the benefits of carrying 2 guns so I carry one and 2 reloads

Usually just one, but sometimes two. If I'm carrying two, it's a 9mm Shield IWB appendix and my Ruger LCR .38sp in my CCW purse. But I've only done that a couple of times.

I carry one firearm at all times, no reloads. There are always other firearms nearby. Remember, your little gun is used to fight your way to your big gun.

I live in the suburbs of Cincinnati. Whenever I'm forced to go downtown, besides my CC, I stick an LCP in my left pants pocket. With all the thugs down there pressing me for "spare change", I feel a hell of a lot better knowing it's there. I refuse to be a victim!

Without sounding preachy or holier than thou, I trust my God as my back up. Actually, I wrestle with carrying or trusting Him daily. The world being as it is, and my responsibility to my wife and those around me, I do carry most everywhere I go. But I do think often of where I really place my trust, in my Lord or in my Smith. I think in the end, my Lord is all powerful and mighty to save, but my Smith is comforting. I just fervently hope I never actually need to use it. Thanks for looking, and God bless all.

I'm not the religious type. But you could look at it this way.......
God gave you the tools and the ability to protect you and yours. He would want you to be able to protect yourself because the devil is everywhere.

When I was assigned to CID, I did not carry a second gun, always carried a second when on patrol. I recently qualified with a model 36 as a second gun and carry it in a pocket holster. For reasons I cannot articulate I have felt the need to be better prepared. Have started carrying a double mag carrier again for my duty sidearm, M&P 45 ACP, two speed loaders for the model 36. Most of my work remains at the station but I cannot shake the feeling to be more prepared.

A Model 60 in your left back pocket???
I could never be comfortable with that thing back there.

That's true for most people...until it's not true anymore.

I am a Christian. There was a time in my life when I believe that God lead me to give away every gun that I owned and I did. For 10 years I didn’t own any firearms except a .22 revolver that belonged to my wife and sat in a lock box in the garage buried under a pile of junk. (Sat there for 10 years and never rusted)
In 2007 someone put a bomb on my neighbor’s front porch and my wife and I really started rethinking our self defense options. I believe that I was again led by God to purchase a firearm and to get my concealed handgun permit as was my wife.
I believe that the primary reason that God wants me to carry a firearm is that it really makes me consider my behavior and my actions because I can’t afford to be aggressive or start any type of altercation while I’m armed. The consequences of misusing or even properly using a firearm are such that I have to humble myself and be the one to back down (if possible) every time.
As far as I'm concerned my safety is purely dependant on Him not some random gun I happen to be carrying
Having said all that what I would do in your shoes is put the gun down and pray about it until you get a clear answer either way. I would much rather be unarmed and in the will of God than armed to the teeth and out of it.

I am too active, as a camp host, to be able to safely carry a BUG. My plan is to utilize what I have until I can reach my REAL firepower

I'm a Christian and understand where you are coming from. I think that we should fully trust Him in all things including our safety, that being said I assume that you wash your hands before you eat to stay healthy. Another example would be driving a car with a better safety rating, just because you do does not mean you trust God less, you could be, but it does not automatically mean that you are. It all depends on where your trust is, in man or in the LORD.
If I go to a "no gun" zone I trust Him to keep me just as safe as when I'm armed, but if it's legal to be armed I will be.
When He calls me home there will be nothing I can do to stop it from happening, but if you have tools available to protect you and your family by all means use them.
As Smoke said "As far as I'm concerned my safety is purely dependant on Him not some random gun I happen to be carrying.

I felt a need to fix that to read " assuming I age", but didn't.. I hope you'll change your mind without a close call to motivate you. Or worse.
I'm old, can't breathe or run or fight, walk with a cane, and no doubt look from a distance like easy pickings. I carry one gun, the same one, every day, sometimes with reloads and often not.
I don't know how long ago you reached adulthood. You may be six feet fourteen inches tall and 300 pounds of rampant, totally confident, martial-arts-proficient muscle, but a bullet or well-placed knife can put you out of business just as it can this 76-year-old semi-cripple.
I prefer to take out insurance. I devoutly hope I never have to use it, but I carry my gun for the same reason I carry a pocketknife. Never know when I might need it, and wouldn't want to be without it if I did.

I prefer to respect anyone's religion, but when it comes to
defending my self I am with the congregation of Smith & Wesson. Back in those days Christians were told to sell their outer garments and buy a sword if they did not have one.
I think today it would read sell your outer garments and buy
a handgun. My view is killing is not murder, murder is the taking of innocent life. One king lost his kingdom because he would not kill, and there were muggers and robbers in those days too and all kinds of sects had to carry weapons or be victims.
So I have no problem when it comes defending our country
or ourselves, some choose to trust just in the good book and
some of us trust in Smith & Wesson. JMO.
I choose to carry two most of the time, but on occasion I venture out with just one gun.
