Interesting! Probably better than the driver door mounted holsters.

Just remember, if they get your car, they get your gun.

You should consider the Carjacker Crossdraw from Andrews Leather or the CoPilot from Bell Charter Oak before installing some sort of retention device in your car.

I prefer to keep it on my person.
Seems like the steering wheel would make it a PITA to bring into play, not to mention the negative attention it may bring in the event of a traffic stop.

Hope it works for you.

Considered this before but been worried it would show from the driver's side window- ya know, from outside. I'm sure you could raise your left leg to cover it but....don't wanta have to. Instead I've just started, if I'm in an area that looks like I might need it, I just place my gun under my right thigh. Main thing is avoiding those places, right?

Here in the people's Republik of NY we are not allowed to leave firearms in a car. Not that I would do so anyway - just asking for trouble IMHO.
Those kind of holsters are too easy to forget to take your gun out of when heading in to a store or something.

Interesting. Just the opposite in Kentucky. You can carry a gun in a car without a conceal carry permit if it is kept in a factory installed container. Obviously a holster like what we're discussing would require the permit.
We have a series of laws protecting patrons and employees so they can leave a gun in the car. They can't necessarily bring it in to a building, but you can have it in your car. The Supreme Court here just ruled you can even do so on a college campus, which is a non-carry zone by statute.
I won't say car carry is encouraged, but it's very well protected.
Right now I carry on my person in the car, but need a better holster option. Will be keen to see what people are using.

i would not leave the gun in the holster while not in the vehicle. PA is an open carry state and i have my LTCF so no issues as to legalities apply. the firearm will go from one holster to the next and i don't foresee forgetting it to be an issue.

Wow. Unlike Texas, where even citisens without a permit, who are not felons can have a gun for self defense in the vehicle. Guess that means that New York is not a Castle Doctrine State. Glad we don't have an endangered speices act to protect criminals from citisens in Texas.

I prefer to never leave my gun behind, unattended. If I stopped for gas and ran inside to pick up something, or to use the restroom, I would not want my handgun left behind unattended. I always want mine on my person at all times. You cannot plan when you will need it.

This is so true. If we knew when we would need them ,we could avoid the situation.

I'd be more worried that taking the gun when exiting and leaving an empty holster would be an announcement to outside viewers. Nick

that's one of my worries...but then again, there is never anything else in the vehicle...registration and ins cards are in my wallet, not the vehicle, so they won't get my address if the vehicle is stolen...it all depends on the holster that i use for it, i plan on getting one that is easily removed to be hidden. my main issue is that i carry on my hip and it is uncomfortable with the seatbelt. i don't like the idea of the gun not being secured while driving. i've seen too many accidents where loose items go for a long ride(former volunteer firefighter). it may not be 100% what i want, but it's better than my current options...
my issues with the andrew's rig are: 1. same as side carry with the seatbelt, 2. the price, and 3. the only person i would buy anything leather from other than a belt is my dad, and he isn't around anymore(and if belts weren't a necessity for my buttless body, i wouldn't buy them either).
again, the gun will travel with me when not in the vehicle. work is the only time i do not carry. i am not allowed to have them on premesis. our higher ups would let one in the car slide, but there is a jail camp for youths not too far away with many escapes. vehicle have been stolen out of our lot and i won't have a gun in mine at work because of that.

I'll stick with an IWB or OWB while driving....I don't want to get into the habit of leaving the gun in the car....also, if you are carjacked, pulling a gun on a guy holding one on you through your window is going to be akward at best...better to tell him "ok, the car is yours" and once you are outside, you are in a better position to draw...just my opinion...

During my 30 yr. LEO days it was drilled into our heads to never leave your gun in the car. I agree w/everyone here in that I keep it on my person b/c if I stop and get out I might need it, to say nothing if the car is stolen the bad guys now have your gun.
Be safe, don't leave your gun in a car.

I appreciated the thread myself- as mentioned, I had considered this type of thing before, still considering, but had never seen those exaact holsters. I do kinda worry about forgetting to re-holster when I get outa the car, specially if I'm in a hurry. Hurried into the credit union yesterday, forgot to UN-holster! Maybe I'm too old for this

speedyquad,
like last 3 comments, I agree this was a good and valid post.
I am looking for a better way to carry in the vehicle for the same reasons you mentioned. Responders here bring up valid points that I have considered as well. Carrying in a vehicle is a challenge - I want it close if I need it, but not a gift to bad guys if I leave it. I have not found the perfect solution.
I have a Chevy Blazer and find that my M&P 40c fits well between driver's seat and center console and matches the interior color so is nearly undetectable, but is clumsey to get out if necessary. Colorado allows me to carry it there.
Maybe some modification of this rig will allow well concealed placement between seat and console as well as easy access if necessary. And of course, don't leave it in the unattended veh.
I don't have an answer, but thanks for posting!

In the 1986 Miami FBI Shootout, two agents who were chasing the suspects had their car rammed, both lost their primary weapons. One was able to return fire with a holstered backup weapon he had, the other was unarmed. Both ended up sustaining injuries during the subsequent gunfight.
My advice? Keep it in a holster.
Remember that when you keep a weapon anywhere but on your body, you risk losing access to it in a collision while in a motor vehicle. Don't think you'll be in a collision? It can happen. I'd go with the words of Clint Smith, "Either SHOOT or DRAW, but don't do BOTH!"
Edit to add: Don't think you'll be rammed? My father recently had to draw his weapon, he was not forced to use it, thankfully, after being rammed off the road by three attackers who felt he had "wronged them" in traffic. My father is a contractor, not a police officer.

as i have said before...this is exactly why i want one of these. i have seen enough accidents and helped look for enough wallets at accident scenes as a rural volunteer firefighter to know that if i were in an accident with an unsecured weapon(even one in a center console) it may end up yards away from the immediate scene. i don't want to chance losing it in a snow drift or the like should that happen...it's too uncomfortable to wear on my side while driving so i need to have it off my body.

I don't know how it is in your state, in Kentucky any compartment that is in your vehicle, you can legally store your firearm. I put mine in the center console and I practice pulling it out.

i've seen too many wallets lost from the center console. just because that lid is closed does not mean it won't come open and the gun disappear into a snow bank or field. the center console is not a viable option.

I was putting my gun in the center console enroute to the range. That was before I had my CCDL. Now I just keep it on my body.

Ok here is a suggestion, being right handed and usually carry a centennial
strong side in a vehicle I usually just slide it under my right thigh or leave it in the holster. when under thigh it is in an old IWB suede/leather holster
with the belt clip removed the kind ya used to be able to get for a few bucks. This way the seat belt is not in the way. easy peasy in and out of pocket and minimal possibility of mistakenly being seen brandishing a deadly weapon.
Originally suggested many many years ago by one of N.Y.'s finest
(East NY?)
For the OP all good info here!!

I had my vehicle carry method worked out to perfection (see 1st pic). The holster could be spun out of sight when the car was unoccupied, leaving only the strap visible. Then, recently I was in an accident in which my car was totaled. My new car does not accommodate the custom driver seat holster that was made for the other car, so it put me back to square one.
After looking at several available products, including the one the OP brought to our attention, I settled on the set-up pictured below. While not ideal it does hold the gun in a easily retrievable position while driving, and when I exit the car it goes into my belt holster.
Unless something better comes along it looks like this will be it.

I felt that it was too easy to forget and leave the weapon when leaving my Jeep and with a rag top Jeep it does little good to lock it when a pen knife would easily cut thru the top .. and I feel much more secure with out having to handle the pistol switching from one holster to another !!
I'll stay with IWB carry unless I have an appointment with my doctors which we can't carry at here in Illinois .. my Jeep has a locking floor mounted Tuffy locking compartment I can secure it in ..

Speaking of ragtop Jeeps, guy I know tells that story about another trooper. Boss called him into the SP barracks, and asked him where is off-duty gun was. He says, "Right out in my Jeep."
"Nope," boss says. "Got it right here in my desk."
It had been stolen six months ago and recovered that week. Serial number got ran, came back to this dunderhead, who'd never even noticed it was gone.

That is scary!
1) That he could be so careless with a firearm, and
2) THAT HE DID NOT EVEN NOTICE IT MISSING!!!
and since it had been gone for six months without him noticing, that tells us that he didn't practice with it very much. SMH

Holy thread resurrection Batman! Thou shalt maintain positive control of thy weapon if thou desireth it in time of need. This also applies to your cell phone. They tend to shift in flight.
Clint Smith said the choices were between driving and shooting. Clearly one must draw prior to shooting. It was on Shooting USA or something like that back before he was a celebrity.

I keep my Glock AIWB and I can draw just as fast sitting as standing. People really need to try harder to find ways to carry on body. Off body carry is not a good idea as it keeps your firearm vulnerable for both theft and forgetting it there or allowing it into the hands of youngsters.
If you can't comfortably carry on body in a method that allows you to draw while sitting, you need to work on achieving a healthy weight

Yes, they are.
Some threads become relevant again because of the subject. This is one of those threads.

I like the Ross Driver's Cross Draw shown in the photo at left. Easy on
and off with the snaps. Don't need to undo belt. I gave the Glock, and
the holster, to my granddaughter this Christmas.
But, I still have the one on the right. Same model by Ross. Shown with
my Model 10 with 2" barrel.

Best as many said is to always keep gun on you. But in car, as long as it's done within the law and reasonably - hidden from view, locked etc.-, why not have some spares?

I keep one with a light mounted in the glovebox. I'm always night ready no matter what. Don't think it's important...? Come home to an open door just once and see. I left and didn't latch the door completely by accident. I came home to two black cats guarding the porch looking at me like, "We got this Dad. Don't worry." I still cleared the house. They were right.

Hmmm, old thread, but I'll bite anyway. I carry my car using that spoiler thing on the back of the trunk.

Another thing to remember is even though you are legal to carry, if you leave the vehicle and someone else is in it, they are in possession of the weapon and violating the law if they’re not also LTC.
At least that’s how it works here in TX.
