Default Texas CHL telling someone you are armed

I can not find it in the book but something sticks in my mind about what to do if someone other than a LEO asks you "are you carrying a handgun".
I think it came up in a class that it might be considered a "threat" if you were to say something to the effect that "I have a gun". Any thoughts.
I just did my last renew on line, so I has been 4 years since I had the renewal course on instruction.

Just from a practical standpoint,I wouldn't tell anyone other than the law or maybe a trusted friend.

I would say something like "I have a concealed carry permit, and am exercising that right. I have a .38 revolver in my right front pocket. How would you like to proceed?"

Edit-sorry, thought you were talking about LEO engagement...

I'm trying to think of a motive for someone asking that question. I guess my answer would depend on the circumstances, was it a friend asking? A stranger? But the big question for me is why do they want to know?

What do you tell a stranger, who asks you how much money you have in your wallet?

If it's an LEO, I will be truthful, very carefully.
Anybody else asks if I'm carrying, if I'm not, I say no. If I am, however.......I say no.
Works for me.

It's nobody's business if you're armed or not.
If you get pulled over, well.... why did you do something stupid in front of a cop, anyway??!!??

My response: "Why do you ask?" and I'd go from there.

411.205 states requirement to show CHL and DL or other official ID to a magistrate or peace officer-nobody else.

First, you're a cop. Once you identify yourself, being armed is to be expected.
Second, California doesn't count, as everything defies logic out there.
Third, my comment was pretty darn funny.

Anyone who speaks to me about anything without being invited is likely to feel unwelcome. This topic would be a step up the taboo level ranking up there with religion, politics, and sex life.

When I took my CCW course in Arizona, I was told by the instructor (who was a retired LEO) that the rules relating to my CCW indicates that I be truthful with PD if asked whether or not I'm armed. If anyone else asks I'm under no legal obligation to answer one way or the other. In other words, it's none of their business.

Only thing I don't like about the thought of being honest with PD is that it's very likely that they will then remove the weapon from my posession and then unload it before returning it (and the loose ammo) to me. I'll be the first to admit that since purchasing an Uplula, I try to avoid loading magazines by hand!

I failed to mention the stop was in Oklahoma, where I was respectfully treated as any other motorist would have been, my gun was taken, my permit was verified, a "fix it" ticket was issued and my gun was returned. I failed to see any humor in your original statement.

In CA they are strict about "printing". If your weapon is visible or seen you can lose your permit. NEVER tell or mention, except to a LEO.

They recently changed the law in Texas.

You've always had to inform LEO that you're a CHL holder and packing.

But they removed any penalty for not doing so.

go figure

If it's not an LEO asking tell them that bulge is a Lipoma (benign fatty tumor) that you are saving to have removed and you would be very appreciative of any donation to help speed the process. I can flat out guarantee the person who asked will most likely beat feet in a direction away from yourself.

Another great reply to a non LEO might be " Why no it's my Cholostomy bag and its rather full" I would bet they would be pretty embarrased!

I had the idea that stating that you had a gun on
you, could be taken as "brandishing". That'd depend on
whether there were other people were within ear-shot.
Any one who asks that question will invariably go tell
a third party. That's why they asked. If you answered "yes",
people will know you carry, which could make you a target.
There's no need for macho for anyone silly/stupid enough
to ask that question. Concealed means CONCEALED!
JMHO, TACC1.

Default Great Idea, No?

You're going to like this idea. I was listening to a talk show on radio and a caller suggested a national law requiring anyone carrying a gun to OC and (this is the good part) the holster must be bright orange in color so that people are aware the person is carrying. Now why didn't anyone on this forum think of that?

That's great. What a genius.

If you're open carrying and no one notices, you're not carrying a big enough gun.

FWIW in Kentucky it's the reverse of the imprinting rules above b/c we're a constitutional OC state but need the permit for cc. So without the permit as long as the gun is fully exposed you're fine, but if you have it even partially hidden they can get you for carrying without a permit.

Say to them....if you tell me if your wife wears a thong I'll tell you if I carry a gun. Screw them....you don't owe anyone except a cop an answer to that question.

..."are you carrying a handgun?".

If you don't know the reason why a question like that is asked...
you always answer with a question...

What you think might be the reason for the question, may not be.

The answer would be... "Why do you ask?".
