Default On-Line CCW Classes

In reading an AP story in a local newspaper this AM I noticed Virginia is allowing people to complete an On-line CCW class (for $ 39.95) that is valid in 26 other states (that allow reciprocity). Apparently after completing the course they send you a certificate which you mail to the Virginia SP. They do a background check after which you receive a permit. As usual the devil is in the details but I'm curious if these other (26) states have restrictions against OOS permits or are they accepted.

My son-in law ( an extremely busy attorney ) took an online carry permit class for the MN permit It involved reading chapters and then taking a series of tests on the material. He then met with the instructor at an indoor range for an interview and a shooting test. I help teach a seven session classroom course over a three week period in Mn. I read the material and the tests my son in law used. They were well done and covered the same material we do. My class does provide hands on gun handling material including a heavy emphasis on dry firing which he did not need as he is an excellent shot and safe gun handler. I would have no problem with the online course for those folks that are similarly inclined.

On-line courses should be fine to cover the legal issues of CCW, but like 7shooter, I believe there needs to be a means to encourage safe training and practice. There have been many comments about the perception that many CCW-ers have poor gun skills.

Pa is a shall issue state and has no courses or classwork or training. Just apply, pay your $50 fee and pass the background check. Avg time 2 weeks.

I believe Pa recognizes Va permits

If I remember correctly John Lott's research didn't find any difference in untoward events between states that require carry permit classes and those which don't. It reminded me of the lack of research showing that drivers ed classes make kids safer drivers. With kids it looked like the longer they drove while under supervision ( that is learners permits ) the safer they were.

That being said I would still want anyone who has a carry permit to have training and the more the better.

I don't see in the second amendment where it says 'The right to bear arms as long as the person has passed 10 hours of classroom instruction and can score a minimum 85% on a shooting test'.

What some people like and wish for has no bearing on people exercising their rights as a US Citizen.

I wish they'd pass a law that says if someone can't name at least the President, VP, Speaker of the House and their Governor and state representatives, then they will not be allowed to pay taxes!

VA does have reciprocity with those states. As long as you have the permit they don't much care how you got it as long as you follow those state laws while you are in them. VA also allows a Hunters Education course to be used as a safety class to get a CCW.
The best resource for VA CCW info is Virginia Citizens Defense League; their website has lots of great info and they, as a group, have gotten a lot of great legislation passed over the years. (No, I'm not a paid spokesman but I am a member and a fan of what they do).

Also, you have to take the paperwork and $50 to the county courthouse to turn it in. If they don't issue it in 45 days a copy of the paperwork is considered valid until you get the permit or a denail letter.

Tapatalk ate my spelling and grammar.

My state (Missouri) doesn't have reciprocity. Rather, we have RECOGNITION. We recognize ANY CCW permit issued by any other state or any political subdivision of any other state - and it makes no difference whether or not that other state reciprocates and recognizes the Missouri permit. So, yes, that permit would definitely be valid here.

OK recognizes ALL state-issued permits. You must be 21 to carry in OK, and must follow OK laws while here.

I once had a VA permit, and the article on the current process published in the Washington Post was a real hatchet job, reflecting the paper's vehement anti-gun attitude.
