Default Short Barrel Ammo

I have been looking at, and maybe a little too much, different 357 and 45ACP ammo specifically for short barrels 3" or less.

I'd like t hear from those that use any of this and why.

Thanks for your input.

What constitutes too much?

Can't speak to the .45ACP out of a short-barrel question, but do report back here what your research finds -- many of us would like to know.

As for .357, strong lean toward Speer Gold Dot's 135 grain magnum load. They're powered down compared to full house .357, making it a more controllable, less wear-and-tear (on you and the gun) defense round in a short-barreled gun, while still providing more punch than .38 +P. Less flash and bang, too, which is nice if you're close quarters and/or low light, and they properly seat against the shoulder of the chamber (compared to the shorter .38), which makes cleaning easier and may or may not improve accuracy.

A real sleeper of a load for snubby 357 Magnum guns is the CCI® Blazer™ 357 158gr JHP #3542. It's 1150fps from a 4" gun & about 1050fps or so from my 2" & 2¼" 357 Magnums. It still has well over 400fpe and is very low recoil. I pay $20.89 for the 50rd box. I paractice & carry with this ammo and it is very accurate in my gun(s).

What I meant by "too much" is, I've gotten very confused with so many choices. Which one to buy? So I'm just looking to see what others use and what brand seems to be used most.

Question For me

not really a factor. Certainly not something I worry about. As long as the round is from a quality manufacturer, and member of SAAMI, I will use it with confidence.

I use mostly CorBon DPX in carry guns.

Is there a range report floating around on this ammo? I'd like to see some numbers.

Nice little thread. I do like the numbers the OP got because I want to use a round with a little more punch (short of the full house 357 loads) out of my 3" M65 and this ammo looks like it will be a good fit. The video was a bit confusing for me.

A bit confusing for me, also, though I thought energy numbers were interesting. Mostly I think the video is documenting the compromised terminal ballistics of a bullet that -- perhaps because it came out of a snubby -- failed to achieve proper trajectory.
