It is good to see that there are some smart parents that have smart children and realize guns shouldn't be kept where the children would not have access to them. Larry

Where's the usual and seeming obligatory statement by some spokesperson of the "authorities" commenting negatively and recommending that you never resist during a holdup or home invasion? The media won't give this news item wider dissemination I bet, not outside Texas.

This was a "good news" story. She followed instructions, and
won't have to live with killing anyone. She's probably shaken
up, but she can recover from that. Hope she joins the NRA.

Interesting that this story has not gotten wide circulation. Could it be there is some media bias when the bosses decide which stories to run and which stories to ignore?

Good for her!! I hope the doctors in the emergency room take their time helping the thug that attacked her.

My wife thinks I'm crazy to tell my kids (11,15 & 16) that if someone comes to our door they should arm themselves.

We live in the sticks and NOBODY ever comes here. One time a strange unmarked white van was cruising around and pulled in and my son was home alone. He locked the doors and a shaggy looking man came and knocked on the door. My son kept quiet but I was disappointed he did not immediately arm himself. He is an excellent shot with a 9mm, and also has his M&P15-22 and his own .243 deer rifle. Any one of those would have been a great companion to have while he sat on the couch waiting to see if this guy was selling magazines or looking for a house to ransack.

I gave a long speech that night to the family explaining how it is NOT irrational to grab a gun and wait, to go upstairs and wait, to be prepared for what may happen. There are crazy people everywhere, just look on a criminal tracking website to find how many convicted child molesters live near you. My wife scoffed at the idea of arming themselves, but I told her a locked door and a dog aren't guarantees that a bad guy isn't coming in looking for trouble.

I just read them this story of the 12 year old girl. I admire her and am so glad she was prepared. I hope my kids won't feel silly being prepared.

I can just picture the perp turning the door knob and asking himself "I wonder what's in here?".

been reading up some of the follow up stories ... guess some time back he picked up some mentally challenged girl from a school causing an Amber alert. Not clear on why he was still walking free after that.
this time around, the girl did good. and all he has to say for himself is that he was homeless for the past 10 days and was looking for food (in a bathroom ... seriously?!?!)

Ahem. I agree with all you said except for one thing - he had to lock the doors. I was taught as a very small child, most of 50 years ago, that doors should never be unlocked unless one is in the process of passing through the doorway. The more I know, the more I advocate that position. What if he had been in the bathroom or otherwise incapacitated for the moment?

Point taken, but we never lock doors. In fact, it wasn't until maybe 6 years ago that we ever EVER locked our house! We would leave the keys in the cars, house wide open, never locked a thing. But times change, and now we lock the doors at night and when we leave.

I miss the old days.
