00 buckshot or #4 buckshot for HD?
Hey guys just wondering what you use for your HD Shotgun I'm currently loaded up with 00 buck 3" mag's and 2 3/4 shells in my Remington 870 synthetic. Do you think 00 buck is overkill? In my neighborhood the houses are close together like 20 foot or so. I'm beginning to wonder if I should switch to #4 buckshot? Would this be a better option? I have a bungalow style home my daughters rooms are upstairs so tactically it's ideal that they are out of the line of fire, but my neighbors are at risk if the 00 buck over penetrates. Any other options I should consider?
Thanks
Here is my HD setup...

I know it's a lot easier to hit targets with #4 buck vice OO. I used to shoot a lot of 3 Gun matches, and you wouldn't believe how easy it is to miss a small target with OO Buck and a cylinder bore gun. An 8" piece of steel at 15 yards can be missed with the nine pellets of OO Buck, while the 22 pellets of #4 Buck will allow you to hit out to 25 -35 yards.
My home defense shotgun is loaded with Estate Reduced Recoil #4 Buck, with some slugs on the shell carrier on the stock...

I don't keep a shotgun ready anymore, but when I did, I used #4 buck, with slugs handy.

#7.5 lead shot. I figure I ain't a gonna be shooting until we're room length apart and then 7.5's will do just fine.

Just use a German Shepherd and back her up with my 9mm. She likes to have fun too.

Having a dog is a great first alarm. When i hear a noise if the dog doesn't bark i know its one of my 5 cats. Having a dog is very important.
My riot shotgun is loaded "00", "slug", "00", "slug", "00". I have blackbears to deal with too in my backyard.

Having a dog is great, i have 2, but they are not for everyone. A dog is not a weapon its a living being. You have to feed it, walk it, take it to the vet. Lets not forget training. All that is time and money. You cant just stick it in a safe or closet until you need it.

#4 buck, twenty plus 0.24" pieces of lead in the air seems better than nine 0.36" pieces of lead.

00 Buck here. Because that's what I have.
It will work just fine at 3-10 yards.

I prefer #4 buckshot. Winchester XB124 2 3/4" #4 buck (27 pellets) is currently loaded in the house gun. I also have some Federal #1 buckshot that I want to test for home defense.

Jeez Cage, that was fine 20 years ago, but now you need Tactical Reduced Enhanced Extra Secret Tactical 00.
I’m loaded with 00, with slugs on the side, but it’s really my river trip, black bear/raccoon gun.
I’d probably be better off with bird shot, as I live in a very small house and the range would be measured in feet, rather than yards.
I’m going to my AR-15 first these days anyway, so I’m lazy and just leave the shotgun set up for rivers.
I know “bird shot” catches heck from the experts, but at across the room ranges I think it’s quite deadly. I’ve seen autopsy photos of the rat hole wounds bird shot leaves at close range. If not, repeat shots. If your not worried about over penetration load with slugs!

When it comes to shotguns indoors , I always look at the furthest possible shot. About 25ft in my house. At that distance a load of #2 shot will still hit virtually en mass and have little chance of any damage to the interior walls.

Are they also +P? Would it be safe to use them in my "Mossy Shotty" even though it is not painted black and doesn't have any picaninny rails on it? Larry

One of our experts who posts on both this forum and several others, Massad Ayoob, recommends #1 buck. He says it fills the pattern better and doesn't penetrate walls like 00 buck does. I think the GA State Police did a study on it and found that load was the best.

My Home Defense Remington 870 is loaded with #1 Buck right now which is sort of a compromise between 00 and #4, but I do also use #4 Buck when #1 is not available - as I don't like using 00 within the confines of a home.

The larger the shot, the better the penetration and the further it carries. At SD distances (<20 yards), 12 to 15 pieces of 00 is a good compromise between penetration and pattern.
#4 is a good turkey round, literally not figuratively speaking. You don't need much penetration but a denser pattern works to your advantage at 50+ yards. I'd go for head shots with my .45, but you can't hunt those birds with a handgun

Chief 38 mentioned #1 Buck. I think that must be the most well-kept secret in the HD business. #1 Buck performs nearly as well as 00 Buck regarding penetration, yet you get 16 pellets instead of 9. It certainly outperforms #4 Buck unless you're at very close range.
