Default Have you ever shot someone?

Please don't be put off by the title. This is a serious question. I am not a "gun guy" and I have never owned a handgun. But in my work I travel some backroads at night and I have some neighbors that really concern me. So recently I have been thinking about getting a handgun that I can carry in my truck, and also have on my nightstand. As an engineer, I am meticulous and will spend the proper time acquiring and learning to handle a gun, and get the proper CC permits.

But all that aside, do I really want to shot someone? I've read lots of threads on here, and everyone seems to lean toward "STOPPING" and intruder and from the guns and loads I see recommended, that pretty much means kill them, right? There are a few that suggest smaller weapons like 22LR or magnums, or shotguns with #4 (but I only want one weapon) that seem to imply "disable" them, but most don't.

So my question - and this is a very serious question - is, have any of you actually ever shot someone in a home or personal defense situation? Was it worth it? Would you do it again? It's easy to theorize about what you will do in a defense situation, and how you'll feel afterwards, but what is the reality?

I'm just not sure I want to go there.

Im not put off by the question .. just the low post count.
you won't find many willing to answer the "have you shot someone" question for that reason.

this portion Ill field though.
first .. if you really want to shoot someone, you should not have a gun. Not one of us wants to do this. If we do it is for having our hands forced to do so ... BIG difference.
Stopping does not equate killing.
you see advice leaning away from 22 calibers .. yes they can stop someone ... eventually .. perhaps even hours after your adversary has murdered you.
and thus ends my contribution until such time as we see what team your playing for

In my circles, that is considered poor taste to ask.

Well, he did join back in July...

In case you are wondering about the responses so far, there is a good deal of concern, which is not without merit IMO, that there may be a concerted effort by anti-gun factions to register on gun forums with the express purpose of baiting members into making statements that would show a reckless, unsafe, or even violent mindset that those "new members" could then quote and use to disparage gun owners in general.

As already mentioned, it is a sensitive topic, and given the climate right now, not a good one for a "new" member to raise. Please don't be put off by this...the best thing you can do, if you are sincere about being a member of this forum, is to post in various threads so that other members can get an idea of and feeling for where you are regarding gun ownership in general.

Yes, it is a rude question to ask. It is a question one must ask themselves, not a bunch of strangers on the internet.

Son,

My father was a lawman and his father before him, as am I.

At most it's in poor taste and bad manners to ask such things in private, lettle on in a public venue.

I've work with other officers for 20 years before I'd even mention such going ons.
Hell, even after 20 years some don't even know I have a middle name.

So, let's jest say, I don't know you, all that well

Su Amigo,
Dave

I doubt you are going to get many useful answers.

Most people who have really been involved in a shooting will refrain from publicly answering for many good reasons such as emotional trauma, possible liability issues, and simple good taste.

You are more likely to get answers from those who have not really been involved in a shooting.
You have to weigh the issue and decide if you would be willing to take a life to defend yours or the lives of others.
No answer we give can make that decision for you.
