Hi all,

Looking to have some sort of holster either under the steering wheel or between the drivers seat and console for some of my pistols/revolvers for when I am traveling longer distances.

Any suggestions?

Why?
Will you be shooting and driving?
If you get in a wreck because you are busy driving to escape a threat I'd rather have my pistol in it's same old reliable strong side verticle scabbard.

Have fun with that mount on routine traffic stops. I'm to old to get on my knees and be handcuffed "for my own safety" while the Officer decides what to do with me.

I don't get it?

Due to the location of my firearm when carrying concealed, it is nearly impossible for me to access it while sitting in my seat. Sure, after some moving around and precious seconds wasted, it'll be out.

I highly doubt I will ever have to use my defensive firearm in any situation, let alone driving. But random violence is, well, random. You cannot predict it. Hence why I'd like to have all my bases covered. It's the same reason I carry pepper spray and have training in empty hand techniques; for those instances when deadly force is not needed.

Regarding your comment about traffic stops, the officer is going to act the same way regardless if he sees it or not. Although not required by law in my state, I still plan to inform the officer as soon as contact is made so that there are no surprises.

I have given this considerable thought, and am looking for options. I am not too partial to the under the steering wheel mount, more so towards the style between the seat and the center console.

I would re-think fastening a gun and holster to any part of you vehicle! Too dangerous in a traffic stop, when you exit the vehicle, if you are in a sever accident that leaves you contusion, and it REALLY should be on your person.

IMHO NOT A GOOD IDEA!

I have a truck gun in my cubby below my radio. You are right that it could take a while retrieving my holstered gun from under my shirt, jacket and seat belt!

I have never found anything I like for a mounted holster. I was thinking the best place would be on the headliner or in a center console.

If I had to put one on the side of the tunnel next to my right leg or under the steering wheel, I'd prefer a cover over it so it doesn't show. Even a piece of black felt (or something the color of your dash) would easily conceal a gun and be simple to get through to grab the gun.

Cross draw is my preferred method of carry, attached to my belt, always with me in and out of the car.

I understand your quandry--
I juggled and moved and looked around for some way of dealing with this very issue, (I live and travel near the border) and I have people with me that expect to be protected. I found a crossdraw/ snub combination was best. (I use a clipdraw on a model 38, but most prefer a crossdraw holster to the clipdraw and I understand that).The weapon is on me, so I don't have to move/ hide/ reholster when I stop for fuel,it was concealed during border patrol checkpoint stops etc. My autoloader is in the console with IWB, which goes in place after I get where I'm going. With a little practice, my clients don't even notice I'm carrying, and no casual observer can see a holster or a weapon. I was taught: if a threat can see my firearm and it isn't pointed at him, he has an advantage, particularly in a confined area(car or truck cab, elevator, lunar rover).

I have one very similar to the one in Al's first reply.

It's low cost and versatility make it an easy option for me to have in the two vehicles I drive most.

I have a small pistol on me at all times, but it's not always where I can conceal a larger firearm. I like options.

I've considered cross draw for EDC, however I've always preferred IWB at about 3'Oclock on my right hip. That goes for my Glock 27 or 30, and my S&W 60-9.

Let me be clear about something up front: I'm a big fan of Crossbreed holsters. That's all I will ever wear or use. Having said that...

I bought a Crossbreed Ohai holster. It's just the Kydex holster and a leather backing--no clips. I contact-cemented the holster to a small piece of Plexiglas I bought at my local hardware store, then bolted the whole assembly to the front of the driver's seat.

When I get into the car I remove my carry gun from the holster on my hip and put it into the holster on the driver's seat. It sits there between my legs, readily accessible if needed. When I leave the car I return the gun to the holster on my hip.

I carry a small hand-towel in my car. On the rare occasion I leave the gun in the car, like when I go into my little granddaughter's school, I use the towel to cover the gun to stay legal. Under the TX Castle Doctrine law I'm allowed to have a gun in my car as long as it's concealed.

Also under TX law, if I'm stopped by a LEO I must hand him my driver's license and my CHL, so that's not an issue. He's going to do whatever he's going to do whether the gun is on the seat or on my hip.
