Default Anyone use a .357sig?

I've heard some good things about this round's performance and that it only takes a barrel change to switch to/from .40 S&W. I would like to hear opinions on this as well as confirm that the barrel switching ability is true. I'm thinking of picking up a Glock or Sig in .40 and possibly an additional barrel for .357 Sig.

I have the Glock 33 and it is a great little gun. You can switch to a 40 or a 9mm just by changing barrels and mags(for 9mm). Midway usually has barrels in stock for the Glock. I think the last price I saw was $99.00.

I have not done it myself as I like the 357 caliber and have plenty of ammo.

Glock 32. Excellent round and surprisingly accurate and controlable in rapid fire as well.

I did in an M&P but later sold it. Price of practice ammo was on par with 45

I have a p229 and I can confirm that a barrel change is all you need to be good to go with either round. Magazine stays the same.
It's a screamer of a round and my favourite calibre although ammo is a bit pricey these days.

I have a Glock 23/32 & a G27/33, originally in .40, but I only use the .357 Sig now. It's so much more accurate and flat shooting than the .40, I really love it.

After I bought my Glocks and converted them, I was told that it's not wise with the earlier Glocks in .40, that the frames may not hold up to the .357. Just through sheer luck, I did happen to buy the later Gen. which I guess is "okay" to convert.

Default 357 Sig

I have a lot of experience with the 357 sig, especially on the Sig229 platform.....instructed it for years professionally and carried it for several years up till my retirement.....I also have a lot of trigger time on Glocks firing the same round......the 357 sig was designed from the ground up to emulate the 357 magnum 125 JHP duty round......it does that very well out of 229 barrels and Glock bl's.....I have converted all of my Glock 40's over to the 357 sig.....it is flat shooting, has a lot of ballistic energy and has proven itself in law enforcement to be a very effective "stopper". There are several "heavy hitter" federal agencies that field this round. A glock or a Sig with a double stack mag full of 357 magnum equalvilant rounds? Don't get any better in my book.

I have both barrels for my P229 but do not shoot it mainly due to the fact the ammunition is fairly costly in my area not to mention all but non-existant. If and when the price and availability become more to my liking, who knows what I might do.

I bought a S&W M&Pc in 357Sig and really like it. it is very accurate and before the ammo crisis I bought alot of practice ammo and I think it is easy to shoot. I've thought about getting a 40 S&W barrel but then it is another caliber to buy ammo for.

Had an M&P 40 compact with a Storm Lake 357Sig barrel for a time. Should have kept it. Flattest shooting most accurate gun I ever shot.

I too am interested in .357 Sig as an alternative (or addition to) a .40 S&W setup.

So far, .357 Sig barrels aren't available for subcompact S&W's but they are for M&P .40 Compacts, and I would consider adding this to my arsenal. I think some of the Third Gen .40 calibers would handle the .357 Sig round as well, which also is interesting to me.

Any thoughts on this from S&W owners would be welcome. I'm not a Glock guy.

I would not want to shoot a 357 Sig out of anything smaller than an M&P compact!

The recoil of the 357 Sig is something to be considered in a compact. Different than the 40, the recoil seems to happen very fast and it's snappy. So it didn't bother me as much as the 40.

I own a Glock 31 & 32. My son has had a Glock 33 and five different Sig P229's in .357 Sig. This cartridge is just plain fantastic. It shoots flat and hits hard. I would love to find a .357 Sig barrel for my old (now my son's) BHP MK III .40 S&W.

I'm not either, but I'm going into law enforcement, so it may be time I just suck it up and buy one so I can get comfortable with it beforehand (the advantage of being able to convert back and forth with a .40)

I have nothing against the .357 Sig but have not used it because I do not want another caliber to re-load and worry about supplying ammo for. While it is a good SD round, I see no particular huge advantage over the .357 Magnum, .45 acp or .40 S&W. that would cause me to run out and get one. Maybe I am just gettin' old!

I have a G33. Run a magazine through it and you have used all the fun there is. On the other hand, it should be effective, and it at least is with me (rule 1 - have a gun). The agencies that use the round have had good performance, but my guess is that those who have shopped that much train more and better and that the training is the variable. If one looks at the research from Doc Roberts, there is nothing that indicated or predicts any performance than any other good quality service round. I would not buy it again, just because of the logistics, but I would carry this round before I would carry the .40.

I have a Glock 32, Sig P239 and a P226 in 357 Sig and I love them and the caliber. The P239 is my carry gun unless I'm in a revolver mode then it's my SP101.......

Thumbs up

I picked this 250C up a couple years ago. It came with BOTH barrels, and 3 13 round magazines, to which I quickly add 7 more. Haven't put the 357 barrel ln yet, but don't expect it to be an issue. Already had 40 dies but quickly ordered a set in 357 from Dillion, as well as a case length gauge. Have a ton of brass for each caliber as well, especially for the 40. It also has night sights.
This is the same gun the air marshalls use, or was at one time. ***** On another note, I picked up some older magazines for about 1 third less than current issue. Only difference was base plate. They would not work in my gun but a call to SIG got me five replacements for free, just paid shipping, so I was still ahead.

Had one, a glock 33 for a short while.........

Never shot any thing with it, 'cept one ol coyote.

Just a 125gr. bullet push'd at close to .357 magnum velocities out of a semi auto.

Good point. When you consider hot 9MM loads like Win Ranger 127gr +P+ at 1250 FPS and Corbon DPX 115gr +P at the same, and Corbon 357 Sig 125gr at 1350 FPS there isn't much of a difference. The 357 Sig has more muzzle energy. But the name of the game is penetration.

The above is probably the reason I sold my 357 Sig.

We were doing some range work to see first hand for ourselves
the penetration or lack there of with HPs re: Ranger SXT .357 Sig.

A surprising number of rounds (bullets) that were shot into
various winter weight outer garments, the material clogged the cavity and did not expand at all.

Penetrated purty good, but lacked the wound cavity of the larger caliber rounds.

I'll jest stick with what has worked in the past....Guess that's why I'm a .44/.45 kinda guy.

I like many others "tested" carry guns in various calibers. I spent a lot of money searching for the magic bullet even though I knew it didn't exist.

I started with a 1911 and worked backwards. Then I came full circle back to the 1911.

I realize the 45 ACP isn't magical. But I simply shoot the 1911 better than any other handgun I've ever owned. And I've owned many.

The report, muzzle flash and recoil from the hotter .357sig cartridges is tremendous. I have witnessed very experienced shooters develop a flinch with this combination in the first magazine.

Yup, I ran some Double Tap 357 Sig through my M&P compact and it definitely got my attention. Rated at 1600 FPS, the recoil and report was something to experience let me tell you.

I'm thinking a subcompact model. What is the recoil comparable to? I have shot a variety, my daily carry is a Milspec 1911 and probably the heaviest load out of a handgun I've shot was a Redhawk(6 inch barrel I believe) in .44 Magnum

In a M&P compact the recoil was very sharp. But the recoil didn't seem to last as long if that makes sense. Follow up shots weren't what I would call ideal.

It was fun to shoot and had a lot of attitude. But I would not carry one in anything less than a full size gun. But your experience may differ.

My hands aren't as strong as they once were. So I carry a full size gun most of the time. More to hang on to!

Default Glock 32 .357Sig to .40 barrel change over.

I own a Glock 32 .357Sig. I am waiting for a Lone Wolf Barrel M/23 40 S&W 107mm Length BLK on back order. It's a drop in for my Glock. Looking forward to shooting .40 and 357Sig from same platform. I'll let you know ASAP.

IMO, the recoil is severe. Similar to a very serious load in a lightweight J-frame. By very serious, I mean recoil so hard that it unseats the bullets from the remaining unfired rounds in the cylinder.

My post above reminded me of another issue I had when I played around with .357sig.
I had some issues with bullets unseating, due to recoil, and some issues with bullets collapsing when they hit the feed ramp. The second issue is probably related to the first.
Both issues occurred with CCI Blazer ammo. Perhaps the aluminum cases don't have the necessary neck tension or surface area to hold the 9mm bullets securely?
I am not a fan of .357sig, but I must also admit that I am not particularly fond of heavy recoil. I load almost all my ammo to the soft side, looking for accuracy over velocity. Almost everything I load has the necessary energy to penetrate a sheet of paper stapled to a piece of cardboard I will typically move "up" to a larger caliber rather than load something hotter.

I had some issues with bullets unseating, due to recoil, and some issues with bullets collapsing when they hit the feed ramp. The second issue is probably related to the first.

I've never shot Blazer .357 SIG ammo, but I have fired many thousands of rounds of brass cased .357 SIG. I've never had an issue, and everyone else at the range always comes over and asks what the heck I'm shooting that's so loud. It's a great round, expensive but so is human life.

I carry it in a 229. I also have 9mm & 40 barrels that I use for the same gun. Great round.

I have a Glock 32 and a 357 SIG barrel in a Glock 22. For sheer penetration (and I'm not talking about expansion or even overall effectiveness - just penetration) it beats everything I've ever used. Tried it out on some 12-ply "bulletproof" glass once, along with 45 ACP ball, 44 Mag hard SWC, 357 mag., 9mm Luger and a few others. Also 5.56 NATO. The rifle round whistled right through but none of the handguns, except the SIG round, even came close. With 125 gr. Win. ball practice ammo the SIG would go through about 3/4 of the time. Penetration far exceeded that of any other pistol round we tried. It wasn't scientific, but it sure was impressive!
