Default Help with Texas CHL application

I completed my online application and paid the fee on 03/23. I got fingerprinted and sent in all my paperwork and photos on 04/03.

As of today, 04/26, the DPS website still says "Application processed online. Concealed Handgun Licensing is waiting on receipt of required materials."

I emailed twice asking them to confirm that they have received the documents I sent in (or not). I received the same form email twice without any information on whether or not they received the documents I sent.

I'm concerned that IF they haven't received my documents, my application may fail the 30 days deadline that starts running from the time one completes the online application and pays for it.

Can someone with experience with Texas CHL process provide some clarity and guidance on this?

Thank you.

I probably wouldn't worry about it. They are extremely busy, and they don't seem to prioritize updating the status of the application on the website. I've never heard there was a 30-day window to get your stuff in after the application date; I thought it was a year, but I might be wrong.

Did you use any sort of mail that provided delivery confirmation? If so, and it shows delivered, I'd advise that you try not to think about it, and refrain from checking for status updates 10 times per day (been there!) They'll eventually get to it, get it processed, and you'll be on your way.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I didn't use certified or delivery confirmation. I should have. I used one extra stamp just in case ...

The CHL instructor told us about the 30 days rule. I think I read it somewhere as well.

You can try and call them to get an update on your paperwork. I did this a few years ago, as like you, it appeared to be taking forever.

Thanks Mike. I'll try again next week. I called yesterday and gave up after holding for about 11 minutes listening to some psychedelic New Age music.

You need to take a class and submit CHL-100 as proof of attendance

It takes a long time to get that first update on the Texas DPS website.

You can go to texaschlforum.com and there is a sub-forum called The Waiting Room where you can compare your wait times with others who applied at the same time as you.

Patience is required. I submitted my stuff 3/21. Just today, saw a real status update. Expect at least at least six weeks for an update. They are swamped and behind on the updates. From what I have seen, on e you do get an update, it seems to move after that. No thirty day limit for you. They have 60 days. I think on average that is being met. Your instructor might have been talking about if DPS comes back and needs something else.

I hear there is quite a backlog! When I got mine about 3 years ago I got the same emails and I worried too. Don't sweat it.

I gave a class in Jan and one of my students just emailed and said his license came in. Since the Newtown shootings and talks of high capacity and "assault" weapons ban demand for CHL applications are at an all time high

I just renewed my license on line. I didn't have to take the class or send in any documentation as I had done so at the last renewal. I got the new license back in slightly less than a month.
