Default GOOD TOPIC

you beat me to it. I did the 44 mag thing when I was younger and that caliber was the king of the hill then. now it seems hunting with anything under a 454 or 500 S&W is being under gunned. (my opinions so please hold the smart comments/insults) now I try and keep the recoil, weight and size as low as possible with rifles/ shotguns/ and pistols while still having enough gun to get the job done. if an animal or human is too big or dangerous to fall to a quality 180 gr stoutly loaded 357 bullet, then imo it's time to run, climb a tree, or find a large caliber with heavy bullet rifle or shotgun. I could see them being used if that is the primary and only weapon. I certainly would not want to carry a rifle and a hand cannon both. my trail gun is a Ruger speed six 357 with a 2 3/4" bbl or a sig 220 s/s 45 acp, and I wouldn't think about taking a shot beyond 25 yd's unless at a yote (pretty much, as I don't like to say never). my bbl length's are now 3-5" for semi's, snub nose - 6" for da revolvers, and 4 5/8- 7 1/2" for single actions. for holsters I've been using DeSantis thumb break strong side owb in leather for a long time and just stuck with them. but if it were not for a Safariland retention 3 thigh holster, my Sig would most assuredly be at the bottom of an irrigation canal that only looked 1-3" deep.

Default Carry a big one

My smallest EDC is a Smith M65 3" RB.....but I carry a M-24 3" RB, a M-58 or a M-29 4" concealed also.....if I am in pistol mode, it will be a Glock 20, 30 or a 1911 of some kind.....been carrying for 40 years.....if you have the right belt, holster, and dress accordingly you can pack some big guns that shoot big bullets. I use Cabo's for the N frame's for IWB and a street combat holster for OWB and Milt sparks for the auto's IWB or a Galco pancake type for OWB. I use a blade tech IWB with the M-65's.

Carry the Gov in a DeSantis belt holster. Surprisingly comfortable and not too hard to hide. I did change the grips after this pic to Hogue bantam style. Much easier to hide.

Back when revolvers were LEO issue, I used to carry my four inch 586 in a Safariland upside down shoulder holster in the summer months. It was a tight enough fit to the body that you could wear a loose dress shirt over it without it printing.

S&W 15-4 with a 4" barrel, plus a Tyler T Grip, in a Galco Combat Master, loaded with 158 LSWCHPs. Reload is the same, in a Galco 2x2x2.

For a few years before Ruger actually made such a thing I carried a custom .45 Colt Redhawk with a 4" barrel. I now carry S&W N Frames in various barrel lengths from 2" to 4". The same El Paso Saddlery Street Combat holster carries all of them.

Depends on your definition of "carry" I've only carried semi-autos for personal defense, but I've had a Colt Official Police in the woods near my father's house. It was my step-mother's father's "giggin' gun"

The biggest I carry regular is a Sp101 with a LCR357 as back up. Two Five Shooters at all times. Now, once in a while I will carry a 2" Security Six and when camping I'll carry a 627 Taurus 4".

640 pocket carried all year long. The way I dress and the way I'm built it's what works. Years ago I very briefly tried small-of-the-back carry (can't use the abbreviation here, apparently) of a G22, just for the sheer unbridled hell of it, to see if it was feasible. Probably would work for a Quasimodo impersonator...

Pennsylvania is an open carry state. When walking my dogs in the woods I sometimes open carry a 28-2 with a 4" barrel.
Most of the people I meet don't really care. Except some of the tree huggers from New Jersey. They don't say anything but their eyes get really big!

The biggest I've carried is a Scoped Super 14" Contender, in a shoulder rig for hunting. For self defense, the 4" 28 in a pancake and 5" 1917 in a 1909 military flap holster (nobody has made a comment yet). 1911's inside the waste and pancakes over the years with spare mags in Safarieland metal carriers.Ivan

Right now, my M65 with 3-inch barrel is the largest revolver I carry. Most often, it is either my 340PD or my M&P340. I wimped out as I got older.

I carry (and I did yesterday) a model 27-9 with a 6.5 inch barrel in a Galco holster. I have to keep the end of the holster in my right pocket so the gun won't poke out below my shirt. It works out very well.

A Model 13 or a Model 10, both in three inch heavy barrel and round butt frame configuration. Carried in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II IWB holster. Those are the biggest I've carried concealed for any length of time. A bit heavy for ideal carry comfort, though, for IWB carry. My avatar shows the 13 on top of the holster.

Again, when I carry something like that OWB, it prints like crazy, to the point I can hardly consider myself concealed carrying.

PS Beautiful old Combat Masterpiece.

The largest calibers I carry for walking the property, hiking, or hunting are either a 5 inch 1911, or a 4 5/8 inch Ruger Vaquero in .357, and I carry both in shoulder holsters. Just yesterday, I traded a friend to get back my old 2 1/2 inch Mod. 66-3 that I'd foolishly sold him two years ago. It came back with my Galco paddle and a Bianchi IWB. Can't make up my mind what new rig to get for the 66 snubbie, but I'm leaning towards a Diamond D chest rig that I saw somewhere in this forum last month. I'm thinking the 66 will be a perfect trail gun for my needs when carrying a day pack or backpack. A Fanny Pack works for that purpose, but lacks the look and feel of a quality leather rig.

PS Beautiful old Combat Masterpiece.
Thanks, it shoots as good as it looks!

Luckily WI is an open carry state too, so I don't worry too much about printing or someone spotting it--however unlikely.

When I am super concerned about maximum concealment, I carry a Glock 23--overall dimensions very close in weight and size to a 2" K frame round butt, but many more rounds of a larger caliber.

My M15 is definitely more accurate, and classier too, though.

For many years I have CCW carried the ruger redhawk in 44mag with a 7 1/2" barrel during the winter time and my ruger redhawk in 44mag with a 5 1/2" barrel in the summertime. I have both shoulder holsters for the 6 1/2" and 7 1/2" barrels. I just picked up a ruger super Blackhawk in 44 mag with a 10 1/2" barrel and a shoulder holster for it but I haven't takin it for a walk yet. Right now it's between my s&w m58 in 41mag and my cz 82 in 9mm Mak but I prefer the 41mag for its stopping power.

2.5" 686, El Paso Saddlery holster. Not the best picture, but you can see that it conceals pretty easily. I'll admit to open carrying a Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt when I'm woods bumming, but most often it's the 686.

S&W 442. Don't leave home without it. See my next thread here on concealing this puppy.

I carry it in an El Paso Saddlery pocket holster.

Someday I have to figure out how to routinely carry a 2" Model 10 in a belt holster. I don't wear the right clothes for that on a daily basis but it would be my first choice. I'm not sure how any "civilian" with a CHL can carry a 4" barreled revolver in normal, coat-less clothing unless he or she can always wear their shirt outside/untucked.

SNUBBIES RULE!!!!

Well, I carry IWB all the time, and if my shirt isn't untucked, I have to have something on over the shirt to cover it. Hasn't been a problem for me, and I've been doing it for many years. Under said conditions, I can easily conceal a four inch, square butt, Model 10 in an IWB holster, even with just an untucked polo shirt, and you wouldn't have a clue I was carrying a handgun.

My standard EDC is a 2" M60-7. The biggest revolver I ever carry is a 3" Model 65. No need to tote anything larger or heavier for me. It is controllable with .357's and will conceal quite well. I have practiced enough with it and hits just where I point it.

L frames and N frames are great guns and I own plenty of them - just don't carry 'em around much.

I strap on this 2 3/4" barreled 310 Nightguard on occasion. With a Raven style holster that hugs the body and a loose shirt, it conceals quite nicely.
It's an "N" frame but at only 28 oz., it's light on the hip.

I carry a 629 4in all the time in the woods, sometimes open carry and sometimes with a shirt or jacket over it if it's cooler. I don't care at all whether it prints under my shirt or jacket. Not an issue at all in New Hamphire with a CCP. If it offends some hippie or treehugger I don't give a damn. They certainly have no problem interfering with my legal right to hunt or my friends legal right to harvest timber.
