Default MD conceal carry permit

Hello all, i am relatively new to this forum and so far have found it a very informative site. Thanks to all for the information so far!!

As my title states, i have been hunting and recreation shooting since i was 6 (now 23, i know still young). My first handgun purchase at the age of 21 was a M&P 9mm and it is a great gun. my question is this: has anyone here applied and been approved(or denied) a permit to carry in Maryland? for any who do not know MD has some of the most strict if not THE most strict gun laws in the union, and i am interested in excercising my rights as an american.

Also, has any MD resident gotten a permit to carry in other states? like i said previously i am new to owning handguns and any information would be greatly appreciated.

BTW i also just bought a 686-6 revolver and love it!

Only way to know for sure is to apply. I lived in Md for years and it was almost impossible to get a CCL.
This was in the papers July 24, 2012 "Maryland concealed carry permit rules to relax next month" Still haven't heard of anyone getting theirs though.

Several states offer non resident permits, but some states are now removing them from their reciprocal list, your license has to be in you home state for them.

I used to live in Maryland... I always heard they are virtually impossible to get, you have to be rich AND politically connected to get one. Even those that get one often have ridiculous restrictions imposed on them and they can only carry during certain times (ie- business owners carrying large sums of money to the bank to make a deposit). I'd be surprised if things get better in Maryland, but I hope they do.

"Free State" what a joke.

Best advice I can give ya is to move to either West Virginia or Virginia. They're both gun friendly states.

I believe Maryland is like NYC, in that it takes connections and Job (jobe) like patience to get a carry permit. I heard that they have the image of a unicorn on them. As you have about the same chance of seeing either one. I thank my lucky stars I'm on the Virginia side of the Potomac. God help us if McAuliffe wins.

I tried. Got my denial a month or so ago after waiting over a year from submittal. Long story short is its impossible, and pray that the SCOTUS takes the Woolard case in October. That's our last best chance to get the law changed in the foreseeable future.

The organization "Maryland Shall Issue" is worth looking into. They have been working for years to address the terrible situation in MD which requires that you demonstrate "good cause" to some bureaucrat in order to exercise a fundamental right - even though the existence of the right should be all the "cause" necessary.

In the meantime, depending upon where you live in MD, it may make sense to seek a VA non-resident permit for use other states. Having a VA non-resident permit will NOT help you while in MD, but will allow you to carry while in certain other states. Be sure to check reciprocity and whether non-resident permits are honored equally as home-state issued permits. I believe the neighboring states WV, PA and of course VA will honor a VA non-resident permit held by an MD resident, but be sure to check.

FL and UT are the permits to have as a MD resident. A VA one may still be helpful.

And yes, join MSI. They are the primary ones fighting for your 2A rights in MD. They also work closely with the AGC and the NRA.

Are FL and UT reciprocal states for Maryland? Meaning if I have a FL non-resident permit It would be honored in Maryland?

No, a FL non-resident permit will not allow you to carry in MD. As others have posted don't waste your time or money trying for a MD permit. Best thing to do is move across the border into Delaware or Virginia.

I spent 20+ years hunting the eastern shore of MD, but as soon as I retire I'll be moving out of MD.

It's a real shame what Martin O'Malley and friends have done here.

Yes i have been born and raised on the eastern shore, i do not wish to leave, so i will just have to try and join different groups for our fundamental rights.

and your last quote hits the nail right on the head.

Have lived in Maryland since '93. I refer to it as the "People's Republic of Maryland". Moving to another state when I retire. On top of the ****** concealed carry laws Maryland is tightening their already restrictive gun purchase laws effective 1 Oct. 2013. Check out SB 281 if you haven't done so already. And never sell that 686!

So..Is there a proper way to TRANSPORT a hand gun through Maryland ? I'm thinking of taking a pistol from one state where I have a CCW to another state where it is legal for me to carry.
What about locked in a box with no ammo in the vehicle ?

Yes as long as your handgun is in its box with the ammo somewhere else( trunk would be the safest bet) you should have no issue transporting it. When I take mine to the range I usually just bring the box and keep my ammo in the front seat...never had an issue

Cool Travel Through MD

Thanks Matt;
I pretty much thought that that was the way to do it, ie; locked in a heavy box with no ammo available.....looking very much like a tool box, buried deep under piles of rotting garbage with a mad dog running around the back of the truck !
Here in FL it seems it's a lot easier. Matter of fact, you can keep a loaded pistol in the locked glove box of your car without a carry permit.

I was stopped in one of those 'Random' DUI check points one night at 11;00 pm. They stopped every third car. I was on my way home from work and had my carry weapon in the glove box. When ask for my license and registration, I also handed him my CCW permit

LO; 'Do you have a firearm with you ?
Me; 'Yes'
LO; Just leave it where it is.
LO: ' Had anything to drink ?
'Me; 'No, just coming home from work'
LO; Where do you work ?
Me; 'Airport'..........
LO; 'OK well have a nice night and drive safely... Oh yea, don't keep your gun and driver's license (insurance card and registration) in the glove box with you gun'

Me; 'Thanks for the tip....I should have thought about that'

We said good night and good bye.

Very professional Florida State Trooper.
I can just imagine if that were Maryland.

Yea I need to move further down south...see Maryland is different depending on which part your from...I live on the eastern shore called "Delmarva" so its a lot of country land and since I do a lot of hunting I usually have a gun with me and haven't had an issue...don't think I would try that on the western side though
