PRO'S AND CON'S of carrying a 3.5in 27
I have a 1954 s&w "pre" 27 in 3.5 blued I got from "Dave" on here, its actions smoother than buttermilk and just got the side plate re blued from utopia gun works here in Texas match's perfect she looks great.
carry it in a lobo iwb holster with a stiff belt even in cargo shorts as its hot as hell here in Texas most of the time I love it and packing 180gr hp I like the lil extra weight when shooting anyone else carry one? if so with what holster and ammo do you use thanks

Donny, first off, I didn't know Utopia was still blueing. Thats good news. That old boy has been at it for many many years-- maybe his son(?) has the shop now. They did beautiful work back then (60's , 70's).
I'm hunting for the right pancake for my 3 1/2" 27.
Soon as I do, thats what my regular carry ( north of the border) will be.

I'll carry my 3.5 27 in either a pancake rig (El Paso Saddlery) or a Lobo IWB. I don't mind the weight of a 27 all that much and the cool factor is off the charts

WOW! That's a lot of gun to carry IWB in such hot weather. Way to heavy for me - I use a M60-7 w/ BB HEAVY 158 +P's. In hot weather I use a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster and when not too steamy I use a Kramer Horsehide Belt Scabbard. On occasion I do IWB carry with one of the soft suede holsters (the old type) but I have moved the clip so it's not right over the cylinder.
I carried a full sized 1911 Colt Gov't model for exactly one week about 30 years ago and found it so heavy, bulky and uncomfortable to conceal that I switched over to the Chief's Special and relegated the 1911 for Range shooting. Love the 1911's, but too much for me to CCW.
When out in the woods I like to carry my 3" M65 with .357 BB 180 grain hard cast SWC's.

well after carrying everything on patrol work from a 66, 27, glock colt 1911 hkm13 for 27yrs I like the feel of the weight on my hip reminds me im packing a cannon well as helps with the mag loads, IF I was going into a gunfight id no doubt pack a hi cap mag 40 which I also have but for personal protection I feel well armed with a cylinder full of 180gr hp's mags "feel lucky punk?"

I never owned a 3 1/2" model 27 but have everything around it. A 5" 27-2, 4"s 24-3 and 25-5. Also a 3" 66-3. Pythons 2 1/2" and 4".
I carried at work two ways. With the large wide sam brown outfit and just a OC pancake. In those days I was huge and since retirement have gotten even fatter. It got to the point that I have to wear suspenders to keep things decent.
I found I pretty much have to wear a gunbelt for a heavy gun. I have some pancakes but even with a light 3" model 36 I find it more uncomfortable than wearing duty stuff years ago. While being real fat I have a flat butt and a bubble butt is needed to keep the pants up. I wear various suspenders all the time and wore "color coded" to my uniforms suspenders close to the last 10 years on my job.
Speaking of model 27 3 1/2"s, my old mentor and friend carried either a pre 27 357 in 3 1/2"s. He was a huge smith collector and well knon in the collector circles way back. There is some chance it was even a registerd magnum. I belive he had told me he bought it off some well known leo`s widow. It had a round texas rangers type badge on the sideplate. The badge was a gold ranger type star with rubys between the stars and set in with a gold circle around it. It had a king cockeyed hammer and the king mirror front sight. The grips were ivory and something to behold with a lot of fine engraved carving. Duke was a big collector of smiths but collected a lot of other stuff. He was the biggest collector I ever knew on a personal basis and that was his favorite gun. He kept that one under his mattress. He was the man who really got me started collecting smiths. If he was still alive he would be over a hundred now. That gun to this day is still one of the very most desireable smiths I had ever seen!

I don't have a 3 1/2" model 27 but I do occasionally carry a 4" model 27-2 in a Sourdough or an old Roy Baker pancake holster. I have a Bianchi 5bhl that I like but the pancake design seems to spread the weight out a little better.

Our old 5 screw family carry piece is now with the next generation, and a newer version has a favorite place in my carry rotation (Sparks VM-2 or Lobo Pancake, Mernickle belt & speedloader pouches, DeSantis pickpouch, Tuff Products QuickStrip. I don't know of any real cons about carrying one of these.

I have several 3 1/2" and 4" N frames and love them all. If i'm out just
woods walking I usually have one them in a strong side or cross draw
belt holster with me. As much as I like them and find the idea of
carrying one for SD somewhat appealing in an idyllic way, I have yet to
do so. Maybe in a setting reminiscent of characters like old Elmer, but
on the hot pavement of a big city I would think the novelty would wear
off pretty quickly.

On the 'pro' side, the 3-1/2" Model 27 is just one of the most stylish accessories that a well dressed gentleman might want to consider.

El Paso Saddlery holster with a ol' 4 screw 27 in it. I don't always keep the pre-war stocks on it... but I had them on when the pic was took.
Pros & cons:
Con: it's a big gun to carry.
Pro: it's a big gun when I pull it out.

Well here's one of my 3 1/2" md 27s in nickel and an old
HH Heiser holster made just for the 3 1/2" barrel length.
Fairly compact combination for an N frame. Haven't CC it yet
but it might work under a jacket. May try it someday.

I dont know what it is, but I carried for 35 years. Now that I am retired I wont put up with the heavy weight very long. Lately I have started carrying (when I do) a light barreled model 36 3" and that seems heavy.
I have the N frames, colt single actions and pythons but truth is I aint keen on packing them. Part of it is the wide uniform belts I wore, the factor of getting used to NOT open carrying, the physical change of getting a bigger gut and smaller butt. I cant even keep my shorts up without suspenders and thats without anything in em! I guess when we had to do it you just learned to accept the discomfort and got used to it.
