Default Carry Weapon Rotation

With cooler weather starting to approach, I have taken the 5906 out on occasion with my new Lobo leather. How do others transition carry weapons throughout the year with different mechanics? M&P vs Third Gens vs Revolvers...etc...

Biggest fear of mine is in a stress situation I would decock and engage safety on a third gen, after transitioning from an M&P with safety or 1911 platform.

I carry nothing with a manual safety. Makes training and deployment easy.

I don’t like switching through a bunch of different carry guns. I carry a 6906 when it’s warmer out and a 4006 as it becomes colder. They are essentially identical in manual of arms and both can be carried decocked with the “safety” off. I never have to stop and think which gun I’m carrying

I have a few revolvers on rotation, mostly Js, all of which I regularly practice with. I carry what I shoot best and what I'm most comfortable with. I rotate holsters too, so that everything gets relatively equal wear.

Only thing I change is my holster. I carry my 442 year round. In the summer it usually rides in my pocket and in cooler weather it rides on my belt.

Same J-frame (a 640, the only J I own), pocket carried, the year around. I see no reason to change with the seasons.

I rotate between Striker Fires, 2 L frames and several N frames in the winter...none with safeties. My 442 is my all year BUG. Model 60 3", G19 are my primary summer carries, but I just bought a Shield, I'm sure it'll find it's way into the Summer line-up too.

I don't carry guns with safeties, it's just one more area to go wrong. If I ever go back to 1911 CCW, that would be an exception, but I'm not sure that will happen. Don't get me wrong, I love 1911's, but I've had so many reps with Striker Fires on the job etc now that the 1911 trigger, though infinitely better, causes me to have to think about what I'm shooting too much.

I tend to stay with handguns that are similar in design. Right now that means for me it is likely striker instead of hammer, DAO with no safeties.

If wanting to go with more capacity, say a M&P9c, I check if my back is feeling up to it... Otherwise I generally carry something several ounces lighter via a single stack usually the 45 or 9 calibers. I favor the 45s in the cooler months and the 9s when its really hot outside.

On very rare occasions I carry the .380 mouse gun, but that is only when the deepest concealment is needed.

I am not a fan of rotating carry weapons. I dress around my weapon in the summer and don't change just because the weather does.

I have many guns, but I only carry one. Yes, I have carried others in the past, but I'm really comfortable with my Commander sized 1911. I shoot it the best so, why carry anything else?

My rotation is based mostly on activities, more than on weather. If I'm commuting, I usually have a DA/SA semi-auto and a J Frame. If I'm working or just hanging around the house, I carry the J frame. If I'm hunting or hiking, I have a choice between a 2.5 inch 66, a .357 Vaquero, or a 1911, all of which I can carry in shoulder rigs. I like variety, but carrying different firearms requires practice and framiliarity with each one. I'm willing to take the time and effort to do that.

I have found through instructing that it is a bad idea to change up your ccw guns to different operating types. I prefer to stay with only one type such as DA revlovers. I even try to carry them in the same carry mode, such as inside waistband. If I do change up it will be with my Glock with one in the chamber, no safety.
When it hits the fan you will not remember what gun you have and how it operates. The less you have to do the better.

On hot sticky July days I carry a gen3 Glock 19 iwb. On cold sub zero winter days I carry a gen3 Glock 19 iwb. When I wanna go crazy I switch it up to a gen2 Glock 19

On very few occasions I'll carry a 1911 or a snubby....very few. So far carried a J frame once this year

Nothing seasonal for me, I just get bored. Sometimes the 45 semi, sometimes the 9mm sometimes the 45 NG sometimes the J. Usually two during the day. I don't worry about transition because they're all DAO.

I just like to get good use from all of mine. The Kimber Gold Combat II, Springfield Range Officer, FNX45 and Governor get rotated evry other week or so.....Just hate Sfe Queens. That way I stop and shoot them at the range on the way home every week too!!

Not seasonal, but I do switch off all the time.

Glock 23 with IWB holster.
Glock 27 IWB or OWB holster.
S&W 686 OWB holster.
Sig 238 in strong side front pocket.

Depends on my mood, but all are open top holsters so they have the same draw.

My simple formula is to carry the "baddest" thing that will work with what I'm wearing. Summer cargo shorts start with my KelTec P38-T, to KelTec P9, to Kahr PM9, to winter Springfield XD. None use a safety.

I carry the same gun every time I carry.

I won't carry a striker fired weapon without a manual safety. Too many incidents with striker fired weapons W/O safeties. I do train to thumb the safety off on draw.

My year round carry package. I admit that every once in a while I leave the J frame behind but not that often.

People have mentioned confusion in a moment of stress. I spent a lot of time on the handling of every gun I carry. By touch I know what I have my hand on and exactly how it operates.

I carry two platforms - DAO S&W revolvers and cocked and locked SA autos - and I am confident that I know the difference when I draw, it's not rocket surgery, it's training and experience.

I don't have a "carry rotation", I do have 4 guns that I carry dependent on circumstances, clothing, and venue.
FNP45 Tactical .45acp
Colt Commander .45acp
S&W 327NG .357mag
S&W 360J 9mm
Both of the revolvers are bobbed and DAO.
The FN is my uniform duty gun, the Colt my plainclothes and primary off duty gun, the 360J is my back up on duty and serves as primary when it isn't practical to carry the Colt off duty, the 327NG is my working outdoors and field gun.

I have many others but these are the ones I carry 99% of the time.

I have 4 pistols in my main carry rotation, a Siig P229R a Sig P6 an FNH FNP40 and an H&K P30 V3 it depends on what strikes my fancy for that particular day. I sometimes also carry my 5903 TSW or my Beretta 92fs Centurian in which case if flip the manul safeties to off when carrying.

I own several different handguns.

My typical carry situation is :

On duty I carry some kind of a Glock 99% of the time.17 or 22.

They feel exactly the same and use the same leather.

Off duty most of the time I carry Smith and Wesson 3914 WITH SAFETY OFF or a three inch model 65.

A second gun , Ruger LCP is always in my pocket ON and OFF duty .

I train to DRAW and FIRE, so I do not carry anything with safety ON or with an empty chamber.

Hope this helps.

I occasionally rotae my EDC, but since all of them are bobbed Chief Specials I don't have to relearn or remember a different "manual of arms". I usually carry the pre-M37, but the 36 & 60 get the nod sometimes.

Safety should not be on the gun but in the operators head.

Summer weather Glock 19

Cooler weather calling for more clothing i carry a Glock 17.

Posted this in another thread, but it fits here as well. In the Spring/Summer when I'm in shorts I carry my Ruger Sp101 with a 3' barrel, and two speed strips since I feel it fits better in shorts. In the Winter/Fall I carry my Springfield XDsc and also I carry that when I'm dressed in formal wear (since I can tuck in with that holster). No safeties! And I practice drawing nightly in whatever set up I'm currently using, with snap caps.

Issued Glock 23 90% of the time either in the issued Safariland pancake while working or a Galco Summer Comfort when off duty.
Approved Glock 27 in a Glock Sport/Combat holster 5% of the time and finally a M10 4" standard barrel RB in a OWB Wild Bill's Concealment Holster paddle rig for the remaining 5%. This conceals surprisingly well under a one size larger polo shirt even though it is a tad long...I have a VA CWP in order to carry the revolver since they are no longer allowed by my agency. Have a 442 on order from a large police supply house but may be retired before it ever comes in.....

Choose one and make that your carry. As you point out each gun is different. To get the best accuracy you need to be consistent with your grip and where your finger rests on the trigger. I have to adjust where my trigger finger rests with each gun I own.

Since I only have two firearms at this time I rotate between my M&P40 full size & my M&P40C. With the cooler weather coming I'll go to the full size a little more often. Same holsters, same operating characteristics, different ammo capacity except when I use a FS mag in the compact. Each time I do that I wonder why I didn't carry the FS, lol. in my experience both pistols conceal equally well with just a little more care required with the FS.

When I was in the Army they trained us to do it by the numbers, the same way every time. And we practiced until we could literally be sitting on the gun half asleep, get a fire mission, shoot it correctly and be back asleep without ever really waking up. They also trained us to set up our equipment exactly the same on each gun so that if I was pulled off my gun in the middle of the night I could go to the next gun section down and know where everything was even in the dark.

I want to be that familiar with my carry piece even if I never use it anywhere but at a range. So my work gun my carry gun and my home gun are the same gun (4006) 90 plus percent of the time of the time and when it isn’t the same gun it’s about as close as you can get (6906)

No rotation, here. Don't believe in a 'carry rotation,' it typically screams "I'm not a shooter."

I carry an HK P2000SK and a 640 when not in uniform. The 640 is always with me, so I don't consider that as a carry piece, it's no different than a pair of shoes.

How does it "scream" that exactly? How would you know if I'm carring a different gun than I was yesterday, and maybe even the day before...maybe I carry a different gun for every day of the week. How would you know that I'm not highly skilled with all of them?

I say a person who cannot adapt to another gun platform without getting confused is not a shooter.

I agree, I thought that post was ridiculous as well.

I'll guarantee you, I can and do hit what I am aiming at with any gun I own.

to each his own. after years in florida both with wheel guns and pistols I wised up and found a composite pistol in 45. I have had 3 of this same model in 20 years. For me the m36 fit the bill- no lugging around lbs of steel in this heat, and it hides just fine. One gun only for me, I practice with the same load I carry- no supprises

I want to be really careful about how I say this because I don’t want to come off sounding like a jerk.

There are a lot of posts in this thread where people are saying “I’m skilled on several platforms so I’ll be OK.”

The thing is you can’t know that until you’ve been in a real encounter with any of your several platforms and didn’t have even a split second glitch about which one you were carrying.

I’ve mentioned that I was almost mugged right after I started carrying in some other threads; now it’s time for the rest of the story.

My first carry gun was a .32 caliber Llama SAO pistol. For safety’s sake I carried it with an empty chamber. The morning of the mugging I drew the gun as the mugger stepped out from behind a car, he saw the gun and ran.

It’s a good thing he did because I was so freaked out I completely forgot there wasn’t a round in the chamber and I only had one platform to deal with.

The next day I started carrying a model 915 with a round in the chamber and I haven’t carried anything but a DA/SA with a round in the chamber since.

I have SAO’s and I have other DA/SA guns I stick strictly to 3rd gen Smiths because I only have to deal with one manual of arms under stress

Just an opinion and you know what they say about those. Carry rotations IMO are dumb. Pick a gun and dress around it. Carrying five different firearms just means wasted repetitions. If you are a GM on every gun you own then my hat's off to you, you are the exception and definitely not the norm.

Default Carry guns

Having carried for 40 years, and having worked with, trained and instructed DA revolvers & every kind of pistol platform thru SA, DA/SA,DAO, striker fired, I want my carry piece to be utterly reliable, and to have nothing to disengage or engage other than me putting my finger on the trigger....so I carry either a Glock 20,30 or DA revolver....under duress I want to be able to draw, engage the threat, press the trigger and fire.

My life depends on what I do and what I carry. Always HOT! there is rarely time to rackaround. This is NOT a game or TV- And caliber? I want to stop you anywhere in body mass- no thru and thru with MAG loads! youll kill someone 3 streets over. Do what you want- but same same- and practise and know your state and local laws cause afterwards its *****

Not sure what a GM is but if it means being familiar and proficient with whatever gun I happen to be carrying, then yes I am. I got that way by shooting them.
