Default 442 High Horn Grips

Hello, All.

I'm hoping you all can help me in a search for high-horn grips for my 442 Pro. Ideally I'd like something like the original Smith J-frame round but grips but made specifically for the newer 442/642 models. Material is not so important; I would prefer wood or imitation ivory (polymer) but I can live with whatever I find. It's the CONTOUR of the grip that's important to me.
I know I can do the Spegel boot grip and probably will at some point if I can't find anything else, but I'd rather do a standard type with a grip adapter on it to minimize reach from the backstrap to the trigger as my fingers are pretty short.
BB 158 grain +P Outdoorsman are my preferred winter carry rounds but I think the higher horn would lessen the sting when shooting.
Anyone?

You aren't going to find any, at least not as a standard item. Believe me, I have looked diligently! You will either have to make them yourself or have a custom grip maker make them for you. The last option will not be inexpensive.

The only high-horn stocks S&W made were for the earlier Models 38 and 40. I don't know if this applies to the Model 38 stocks, but those for the Model 40 had smaller 1/2" stock washers instead of the standard for other I & J frame stocks that have 9/16" washers.

Default Well, Darn IT!

I was afraid I was going to get this response. I have searched the internet multiple times over the the last two years (since I bought the 442 Pro) with no success. As far as "stock" items go, Spegel seems to be the only game in town. I'd contacted a couple stock makers after buying the 442 and asked about custom jobs only to be advised that they didn't do them.
I'm not what you'd call very handy with woodworking so making them myself is pretty much out of the picture. Darn it.
I guess I'll end up contacting Spegel pretty soon.

Try Patrick Grashorn. He might be able to make you a set from elk stag if you supply dimensions and/or photos/drawings of what you want.

I, too, have been wishing high horn magnas for newer Centennials existed and have inquired here on the forum if it was possible to swap larger washers onto older stocks to make them fit but it turns out the older grip frame is entirely different due to the grip safety mechanism the older guns had. In other words, even if one were to swap larger washers onto a set of older small washer Lemon Squeezer/Centennial stocks, they still wouldn't fit right. See this thread: Centennial "High Horn" Stocks

Just an FYI - vintage Bodyguard grips work well on the current hammerless guns and they have normal size J frame washers

Mike, that's good to know but we all want that extra quarter-inch of height and that sideplate screw covered up.

Sounds like there is a unfulfilled need out there! Too bad some stock makers don't recognize this and start providing at least a generic magna style for.

I know that I would be willing to pay more for correctly fitting stocks than what it would cost to buy standard magnas from S&W or other makers. How much more? I'd happily pay $60 and would seriously consider up to around $75 without a S&W emblem. Higher with.

I'd gladly be a test subject after looking at some of his work here.

FWIW, have you checked the shows? There are private sellers with tables of older factory grips. Not cheap, but you may find what you're looking for.

Default "High Horn" grips

Here's a couple of images of my "high horn" grips (elk/stag???) mounted on my S&W 640 (no dash). I purchased these grips on eBay several years ago. I don't know who made them, but I believe they were made by Grasshorn as the workmanship is very similar to the three pair of Elk grips that I had previously purchased from him.

High-hrons dfinitely look better on the Centennial revolvers, but unless you shoot with a high hold I don't think they'd do much for recoil. I shoot with the curve of the butt in the hollow of my hand- high horns woldn't do anything for me but look better.

Now, that's what I'm talking about! Absolutely stunning. Sounds like I need to contact Grasshorn.
