I do!
You never know when your primary mag might up chuck and toss its rounds all over the deck, its happened to me and I've seen it happen!
Also if you have to perform a Tap, Rack, Bang, or a type 3 malfunction which requires ripping the old mag out, vigorously working the slide to clear the jam (if not actually locking the slide back and extracting the failed round manually) the reloading with the new mag.
And lastly, you may never need the extra rounds, but it sure is nice to know you have them just in case.

I do, too.

I use the Blackhawk single mag pouch. If I want to carry two mags, I wear two pouches. The have big clips on them and retain the magazine very well.

At least one always. If a full sized mag, it usually goes I a belt pouch. If a subcompact mag, I keep it in my support side front pocket. I carry a spare for the reasons Badkarma mentioned.

I'd imagine the majority do. I do, in a Leatherman tool pouch that hides in plain view either a spare magazine for my Model 457 or a speed strip for when I have the Model 38 in a front pocket.

As a civilian I carry a Revolver and one reload, but if I did carry a 6, 7 or 8 shot Autoloader I would carry an extra magazine, unless I had a Glock that held 15 or so rounds.

No. When I carry my 14 shot P2000 I cannot comfortably carry another mag in SoCal weather. I know you should, but I risk it.

I don't carry a spare mag, but there's a spare mag in my car. I do carry a spare gun. The 40 is open carry on my hip with 15 rounds, and the 1911 .45 is concealed with 8. I can drop a gun and pull out another faster than I can reload or clear a jam.

Also, after cowboy shooting practice, I can shoot 'gunfighter' style. One in each hand, firing left gun, right gun, left gun... Aiming left eye, right eye, left eye...

But double fisting guns in real life scenarios is not practical. I just think it's fun on the range.

The following was posted by Masaad Ayoob in another thread on this topic here and there's really nothing I can add to it

Quote:
Two complete reloads was standard equipment for most police officers before any of us here were born. If I was asked in court why I carry spare ammunition, my answer would probably be the same as my answer for why I load with hollow point ammunition:

"Sir, if the police determined it was the best thing to use to protect people such as myself and my family, it seemed obvious that it was the best thing for ME to carry to protect myself and my family."

I carry an extra magazine no matter what brand the handgun is.

Typically use a ballistic nylon folding knife pouch, or leatherman sized pouch for double stack magazines, that have a flap that uses velcro for keeping the flap in place. They attach to the belt via a loop. They seem to cover and disguise the magazine pretty well.

I find myself doing what I did before I retired. I carry two spare mags in either a Don Hume or Galco open top snap on carrier opposite my gun which is a P229 .357sig. It's partly old habit, and partly I feel better balanced. When i carry my Glock 32C I do the same thing. Doesn't matter that I usually have a BUG, I always have those two spare mags.

I don't carry one, but after reading this...maybe I should? I have always felt 13 rds. in my XDsc would suffice. And though I have never had a problem, heaven forbid that I ever do!

Count me in 1 sometimes 2. It's like a spare tire in your car you may never need it but if you do you don't want to be SOL.

My usual carry gun is either a 3-inch or 5-inch 1911, and that always has at least one spare go with it. A couple of times lately I've gotten lazy and only carried my pre-B CZ 75 with the inserted magazine. I always feel just a little bit guilty when I do.

An acquaintance of mine had a 1911 with one spare with him one night and thwarted a robbery at a convenience store. It was after a movie he and his wife and teenage son had been out to see, and they had stopped at the store on their way home for his son to go in and buy a soda. While the son was inside and they were waiting outside in the car my acquaintance noticed another car enter the parking lot with its lights out. A man got out and began peeking into the window of the store, casing the place. He was observed to have a pistol tucked into the front of his pants. There were three other suspects in the other car.

Long story short: he confronted the suspect as his spouse called 911, and for a moment it all looked like it was going south. Fortunately every cop car in that western city showed up PDQ. All of the suspects were armed, one with an AK. Two were felons on parole and two were illegals.

He started carrying two mags after that, and many times I now do as well, remembering that story.

Always one spare for my M&P or Glock. When I was carrying a single stack 45 it was always two. Mags can fail, normally at the worst times.

I don't carry spare mags because my edc holds 13+1, and my backup, 6+1. If I find myself needing more than that, I'm someplace I really should have avoided (and me without a long gun)

I keep a spare for each in the car though.

For my BUG/Ruger LCP I carry one spare in back pocket. For my XD9 I carry two spare in a desantis leather mag pouch.

If something on a gun is going to break it will be the magazine first.

I don't for several reasons.

Mag malfunction? What's to say a spare isn't a lemon also? I have full confidence in the gun and one mag I carry. If I need more ammo, I've already put myself in a situation that's lost and should have brought an AR to a handgun fight. I'm not trying to take over a gang's headquarters, I'm trying to stop that guy from assaulting me.

With your training and experience, I'd wager the chances of your needing a reload off duty are slim at most. In the first place you know how to avoid situations like that, and in the second I'm sure you're better trained than most civilians in the use of your sidearm.

Me, I'm just a crippled-up old geezer with a tame retired life. If I need a reload after five rounds of .38 Special +P I'm probably well and truly diddled anyway, but I often carry a speed strip.

I always have a reload. Mainly because my wife when she carries does not have a reload with her for her off duty gun. I carry the sub compact of her off duty gun because basically she got it and liked mine better so we traded. It is easier for me to carry a reload on me than it is for her due to clothes.

Spare magazines are a lot like Preparation H, they can help you get out of a ****** and painful situation.

Me, I carry a lot. I never know whether the primary is going to stop working and I don't intend to lose for lack of shooting back.

It would be fun to test this. I'm not saying you can't, just that it would be fun to test.

Carrying a spare is not about quantity of ammo. It's about being prepared in the event of a malfunction. Not necessarily a mag malfunction, but any malfunction. It's much easier to fix if you have a spare.

So lets say u guys carry an extra weapon or possibly an extra mag. Bad guy comes at u with his own gun. Ur gun jams......Now some say they can pull a spare gun faster than they can clear a jam or possibly insert a new mag.

My question is.......Whats the chances of u doing this faster than the bad guy can pull his trigger just to see if his works?

I'd be willing to bet that if his works the first time. U'll never get ur second chance.

Sheesh, these hypothetical "what ifs" scenarios get irritating trying to justify one side or the other of the extra magazine topic.

If you don't feel any need to carry an extra magazine because you don't want to, for any of your own reasons, then don't.

If it makes you feel more prepared to carry one, then by all means do carry one.

It really is a pretty simple decision and completely an individual choice.

Well said. It's like the guy in another thread who feels safer carrying two full-sized steel handguns concealed. If that's what meets his perceived needs, that's fine. My choice is to carry a J-frame--no magazine to fail or drop--and sometimes a speed strip. That's what makes me feel safe.

It is absolutely an individual question. I respect other people's choices and appreciate (and usually receive) the same courtesy.

Just because you've been shot does'nt mean the fight is over. You keep fighting until you can't fight anymore or you win.

That's called the 'lay down and die' syndrome ... people get it from watching too much TV and movies where if you get shot, no matter where (including an arm or leg), you fall down and die.

Just three days ago I responded to a double shooting. One guy took one in the abdomen that perforated his liver, the other guy took one in the lower right chest that affected his lung & breathing ability, yet BOTH of them were able to run 50 yards to safety AND were awake and (relatively) mobile when the medics got there. If either one of them would have been armed, they DEFINATELY would have been able to fight back.

When I was shot back in 1993, I remember thinking about a cop who had been shot in the thigh and was still able to walk downstairs and call for help for himself (ND from his own gun, BTW, so was mine lol) and when my grandfather sprained his knee hunting in the woods and walked out to camp, and I thought to myself: "If THEY can do it, so can I." and I walked upstairs to the kitchen where I waited for the squad.

Just because you're hit doesn't mean game over ... it's just starting.

There is a mistake in your logic. This statement presumes a static condition. Any fight is not static.

If you have a malfunction, the very first thing you should be doing is moving. Fix it on the move.

Besides, another mag or another gun is not a guarantee. It only opens an opportunity. If you don't have a spare mag and your gun malfunctions, then you have a guarantee of not being able to shoot another shot.

It really is a pretty simple decision and completely an individual choice.
And that really is the answer for all of the heated arguments we have. Which is better, revolver or semi-auto? 9mm or .45? Ford or Chevy? Baseball or football?

If we follow our gut, do what we feel most comfortable doing, we will be at peace with ourselves. When the whistle blows, if it ever does, having followed someone else's advice will not save us.

I read a saying many years ago that I oft repeat to myself to this day. "A man convinced against his will is unconvinced still!"

Stay happy, my friend.

Speedloader for me in low-profile belt pouch. But, then, I always wear loose Hawaiian shirts.

Why wouldnt u just carry a revolver?

Save the weight and the hassel of needing an extra mag in case of a jam or whatever u want to call it. My guess is the average CCW holder will freeze up and forget about the extra mag because of the adrenaline rush. And if u dont practice reloading from a self defense point and building muscle memory. Then once again, its likely the adrenaline will over ride ur train of thought.......So that extra mag or that extra weapon will more than likely just be extra baggage u carry yet will forget u have when u actually do need it.

IMO, i think more people should worry about shot placement and practice it as much as possible. If u carry with one in the chamber, i'd be willing to bet it goes bang 99.99% of the time. U can have all the extra mags and guns u want. If the bad guy has better shot placement, then u will never get the chance to go for extra mags or another weapon. He wins simply because he did the most important thing better than you.

U du wat u want.

I hate to bring this up for fear of sounding melodramatic, but as a retired military officer I remind myself daily that we are at war against an unconventional enemy and engaged in asymmetrical warfare. How long before a mall gets hit, or some other soft target? Life imitates fiction; Tom Clancy wrote about an airliner being used to hit the US capitol years before 9/11. Afterwards the talking heads said, "Who could have imagined it?" Stephen Hunter wrote about the Mall of America being hit a year or so ago...now Westgate is history.

Maybe more magazines are good, especially if they are unobtrusive and not cumbersome. And especially if your handgun grants you the time to get to your AR, or to take an AK away from someone you have just made sure won't need it anymore.

I carried a extra mag for my fnx9 the other week, it actually made the gun easier to carry. Will be doing it from now on in cold weather. fnx9 (17+1) on the right hip in a IWB holster, 17 round magazine on the left hip in a IWB holder. Balances the gun out pretty well but one downside.. I tossed my "fat" clothes. All this extra metal doesnt fit in the waistband with me in there too very well!

I also thought it would piss off some liberals if they knew I was carrying two of the devils high capacity magazines at the same time. So there is another bonus.

I have found it pretty easy to stash speed loaders in a pocket (at least J & K sizes, anyway), and two seem as easy as one to carry.

True, nor are all conservatives pro-gun. I take people as I find them, and I've known plenty of exceptions to both pigeonholes.

Assuming is a tricky game and humans are complicated critters.
