Default Flat out asked "are you carrying now?"

I'm in a small office and we had a salesman from Ohio visiting and he wants to get his first gun so we start talking. All guns are Glocks and all rifles are assault weapons to this guy, so I can do a little educating. I ask pretty standard questions, what have you shot in the past, what do you want to use it for, where will you store it...

Conversation shifts to concealed carry I explain NH law, and I tell him I can give him no advice on Ohio law. He then flat out asked me "are you carrying right now?"

I hesitate for about 2 seconds and tell him no. He picks up on the hesitation and doesn't believe me. I get him off the topic and we go our separate ways.

It's none of his concern if I'm carrying or not. If I tell him yes, his next likely question will be show me. Not gonna happen.

I will not discuss guns with him in the future.

Anyone ever run into something similar? How did you handle it? Any advice for next time?

Thanks - Matt

You did good.
If somebody other than an LEO in the performance of their duties asks me if I am carrying, and I'm not, I say no. On the other hand if they ask, and I am carrying.........I say no.
Nobodies business.

I've met people like that guy. It's an opportunity to give them their first lesson in "gun etiquette".

Default Flat out asked "are you carrying now?"

My typical answer is, "what sort of guy do you think I am?" That seems to throw people off. Some will try to see if they can spot a suspicious lump. (They never have) The conversation usually gets turned to something else after that.

I don't expect everyone to make the effort to carry daily like I do. I am not proud to live in a day and age that I see it necessary to carry, but to each his own.

Since I do not lie, I answer "I do not have a firearm on my person." And that is the truth as I am carrying two firearms.

Could some anti-gun type construe that as a threat? Might not be a good thing to say.

A few years ago a guy who was an elder at my church sold me a nice 4" M28-2 for $400. After we made the deal he asked if we could speak in private. (His Wife was there). He said the board had had some discussions about church shootings and wondered if it would be a good idea for somebody in the congregation to be armed. My name came up. I asked him if he could keep a secret, and he said he could. I told him that since 9/11 I had been armed in every service. The only people that knew were my Wife and the Senior Pastor and his Wife, who we are very close friends with. He seemed relieved.
The next Sunday we had a "fellowship". (For those of you who do not go to church, that means we get together in the fellowship hall and eat till we bust). I walked by this guys Wife and she loudly said "Jim, do you carry a gun in church!?" I simply said "no, I never do".

She was kind of a simpleton.

Always say no.

I have had that happen and when no one is around I absolutely will show them. It's not a big deal. It's not like he killed my wife and raped my prize winning pig! :what:

I take out the ammo and the gun is no different than a stapler or a coffee maker. Often this takes out the awe and demystifies the gun. They see it, hold It and it's just material not a magical child death ray. If they wanna see the ammo also not a problem. I holster the gun and they can check out A BULLET. Basically it's the bullet that was originally chambered.

I treat it like with kids. Demystify it and they react normally. Yes a lot of people who have no idea about guns think they are all Glocks. I don't know much about airplanes and think they are all the same (within their respective class).

Why do people act as if asking to see it is so offensive? The horror. ...wow

Oh and usually this is followed by "can you take us to the range" and "I would like one where can I buy one?"

It's kinda like asking what kind of underwear I'm currently wearing... Don't worry about it it's personal.

Truth is I'm never in a gun free zone.

I can agree with the de-mystify it. My parents never denied me alcohol growing up. I was drunk at age 8 and didn't touch it again until I was 22. It was never a big deal, and I never cared about alcohol.

Former high school friends turned into alcoholics with those stupid get drunk parties. That went into not caring about health hazards and the rules you've been taught, which leads to marijuana (which I don't really argue for or against), and went further into cocaine and dealing.

Mystifying something makes people afraid of it or want it, which creates laws. Making it normal grows education and respect.

Even better -

"Are you carrying a gun now?"

[Chuckling] "No, really. Are you carrying a gun now?"

[straight face - silence]

I have only been asked once, I told him "If I was I wouldn't tell you". Seemed to satisfy him.

If a woman asks, I'll tell her the truth. And then seeing as one personal question deserves another, I'll ask what color under wear she has on.

For me the answer is person AND situation dependent.

Someone I trust in a private setting - "Sure" and as Arik said I'm willing to let them see what I'm carrying if I feel it is appropriate.

Someone I don't know or necessarily trust, or in a public setting "Why do you ask? Do I need to be?" or something equally disarming.

My response has been "Do not ask me a question I might have to lie about."

Then correct them and advise that is not a question that is asked.

For those new to shooting sports and the arena of concealed carry, they may not know better.

For those who should know better, it serves as a pointed reminder.

I've been asked once or twice if I'm carrying.
I smile and say, "You'll never know if I am or am not carrying."
That usually ends it and we move onto other subjects.

I have a couple of different thoughts on this, the first is that this is one of those questions where (IMO) any avoidance of the question will be taken as a yes. So, as I mentioned earlier my default answer is no regardless. It’s a lie but it’s one I’m willing to tell in the interest of Opsec.

Second thing even if I know you I think twice about answering yes.

When I first got my permit I told two close friends about it. One outted me just out of the blue while he, I and another guy were having a conversation after church. My buddy turned to the third guy and just randomly said “Smoke is carrying a gun right now.”

The second guy was one of those people that think carrying a gun is “cool” and one day in the course of a conversation we were having he informed me that he had told half the staff of the church I attended. Hs rationale was that they'd feel more comfortable knowing

Now maybe I’m too touchy about that but it’s my business to let someone (or no one) know that not yours and the easiest way to keep that initiative is not tell anyone.

Default Flat out asked "are you carrying now?"

If people are asking if you're "carrying", in my experience, they've likely been lead to believe that you are by your own words or actions.

Regardless I've never feigned indignation at the inquiry on the few occasions someone did ask.

Discretion in some matters, does matter.

Went camping with a buddy of mine and each of our sons. He asked me, "Are you armed?" to which I replied, "I'm always armed; one left arm, one right arm!"

I don't discuss politics, religion, or guns with people that aren't close to me.

When I'm at work, it's not my job to educate people about those things and frankly I don't care.

I knew a guy that got canned at work. Because he liked to spend his lunch break at the indoor range next door, they were afraid of him and had him escorted off the property by the cops.

Separate your personal life with work.

I have no problem telling someone who asks if I'm packing. If they ask to see it, I simply say "viewing is restricted to those that give me justification for pointing it at them".

Can't say any conversations have gone any further.

Yes, of course I ment that in a private setting or at least a closed setting with people you trust. If some guy is acting all gung ho and shooting air machine guns (like air guitar) and pretending to be Rambo of course in that case my answer is NO. However, if the person is seriously interested even if they are clueless and make assumptions (we all do about things we don't know) then I'd be glad to show them and teach what I can. Why not? We all had to start somewhere. No one in my family is into guns and I started by trial and error. I wish someone had explained and showed me how and why stuff worked. To me a gun was a gun....what's the difference?

A perfect example is I recently noticed a coworker looking on Ruger website. I asked and he said he's looking into a small revolver and that he owns a Beretta but doesn't know much past how to load it and where to point it.

As I do, i never discuss it with anyone outside the few very close friends and family who took the classes with me.

I have other family members as well as other friends whom have no idea i'm carrying each and every time we are together. As far as im concerned it's not any of their business. If it was their business, i'd walk around with a shirt that says "Yes i'm carrying a gun, and No you can't see it.".

I've learned that it's best not to discuss guns at all and especially
anything personal about guns or carry with someone who isn't already
quite knowledgeable about guns. Sometimes it's hard to follow this
personal rule without being rude and so I just try to answer questions
and avoid talking about my self.

I answer yes and if they ask to see it and I am in a proper place I unload it and hand it to them and try and educate

Thanks for the input.

The hesitation is what got me. I don't like to lie to someone, but knowing this guys personality he would spread it around. He may even be spreading it around now assuming I lied.

I'm not concerned about any repercussions, we have an HR guy in the office and about a week before Christmas he came into my office and said got to show you something. We went to the truck of his car and he showed me a nice J Frame he got for his wife.

Other people in a one on one situation, I may answer yes, and safely show them. This guy just caught me off guard.

Default Concealed or not?

Concealed means concealed. If you reveal that you are carrying, in whatever form, then it is not concealed.
A possible answer might be "Sometimes yes, sometimes no."
BUT, we should keep in mind the fascination about firearms that we in this forum have, and that is shared by many people who have never had the opportunity to experience the fun. So many people have never even seen a real gun and are extremely curious so they ask a genuine question about it. Another possible reply might be "If you are interested in learning about the shooting sports, I would be glad to take you shooting sometime."
I always try to not alienate people who might be "on the fence" about gun ownership. We might even convert a few.

Lots of people I deal with daily know that my business is holsters and accessories, primarily for those who need to carry concealed. I am regularly asked if I am carrying. I always tell them that the true test of my products is whether or not they can tell!

Ray, even with my great big N-Frames, when I'm wearing the holster you sold me, NOBODY can tell.

I like this response....

Are you carrying right now?

Can you tell? or Does it look like I'm carrying?

Thats getting off easy. Wait until they ask you if you ever killed anybody.
Once many years ago I was standing in the gun department of a huge chain store in california. Some wise guy came up to the counter and got mouthy, I cant remember over what but when he walked out and there were about 4 of us standing there and someone indicated he was armed and three more of them were all packing and one turned to me and said you packing too? I just said "I got nothing to say!"

I logged in just to reply here.

Many very entertaining replies to read and I enjoyed myself.

If you don't want to tell the truth simply avoid the question, and spare yourself the lie.

I've been waiting 12 years or so for a LEO to ask me if I have any weapons on me, or in the car so I can answer: Of course I do......and then with my best poker face say .....doesn't everyone?

You must be painfully aware that because the bulk of young people and society as a whole have been brainwashed into believing that seeing someone with a gun is the worst thing possible and undoubtedly panicked calls to 911 will surely follow, we must discreetly conceal the wretched devices from public view and go our different ways ever distrustful of the people we share this world with.

We had a Cabela's greeter at a Nebraska store a couple of years ago ask my friend and I if we were carrying concealed weapons.

My reply while walking on was " Why would we tell you?".

I am sure there was no offense intended nor none taken.

In retrospect, if we had said "No" perhaps he would have asked "Do you want to borrow one of mine?"

Best.

Friend or neighbor: "Jimmy, are you carrying"?
Jimmy: if I am not completely nude, you bet"

"Jimmy, are you armed"?
Jimmy: with a firearm ? certainly not ! I hate GUNS !

"Jimmy, would you shoot some one"?
Jimmy: "only if they objected to me dating their wife/girlfriend"

AND so, fellows, now you know how the term "Naughty/Bad Jimmy" came about.

It depends on the situation as to how I would handle it. If I were worried about how the guy's ability to keep it under wraps, I'd avoid the question.

I have been asked once and I simply replied yes. We were at a person's house and not in public. He asked to see it and I said no. The conversation went elsewhere.

The idea of carrying concealed is to be concealed or to answer anybody"s questions. Or to show them your gun because they are curious.NO ONE IS SUPPOSED TO KNOW.........

I'll discuss guns with folks I know are gun people and with others if they ask me a specific questions, but I no longer argue guns, politics, or religion.

I don't remember the last time I argued these topics with someone and at the end they said, "well you certainly enlightened me so much that I've changed my mind." Seldom does anyone with strong feelings change their mind as the result of an argument.
