Too early to tell...
Well, in Illinois the state police website gave out the applications on January 5, 2014. Many applied that day, including myself, by uploading all the required documents, including the ridiculous $150 fee. None have been issued yet. They have 90 days by law, but this is Illinois, and they have routinely gone beyond the "law" with FOID card issues, and just say they don't have enough staff (give us more money). In Early April they will have to issue a bunch or will not meet their legal obligation. I think they will be issued shortly before the 90 days expires.

Mine took about a week.
No class necessary due to my Army pistol competition record.
Took paperwork into the Sheriff.
They fingerprinted me and took my picture.
Gave them a check for $60.
Card was in the mail shortly thereafter.

about 3 weeks ( mine was longer b/c the town office lost mine but it was all figured out later on )
No finger print or picture required. Here in Maine the state police will do the issuing but if your town has a police department it can be done locally. My town does not actually have a police dept but we have a town constable which I guess is sufficient.

Illinois here, no permit yet. My application went in electronically Jan. 13. I received an e-mail Feb. 2 stating ISP had received my application and it was now in the review process.
I had to jump through quite a few hoops to get to this point. Because of my veteran status I was excused from four of the eight hours of training.
Then I had electronic fingerprinting done to hopefully shorten the wait from 120 days to 90. January 5th was the first day you could apply on line for permits. So, I go to the Illinois State Police CCW website and start the process. The first thing you need is an Illinois state digital ID. Not to be confused with an Illinois state digital signature, which I already had. There was a handy link to where you could obtain the digital ID. A simple form to fill out with your drivers license number, name and weight from your drivers license. I filled out the first page and hit the continue button at the bottom. A loading screen appeared and never went away. I backed up and tried again with the same result. There was a phone number for assistance but this was Sunday and the office wasn't open. Next day I called the number five times before I even got into an answering queue. Finally after 27 minutes waiting I got to talk to a real person. My problem was I wasn't using Windows and Internet Explorer to apply for the digital ID (Apple house here). So I went up to the library to use one of their machines only to find out they don't use IE and wouldn't let me switch over to IE from the Firefox they were running. Called a friend who let me use one of his machines and started to fill out the form again only to be told the license number was already in the system. Again called the help line. Only ten minutes this time to a real person. Found out that my initial try had been saved on their system so would have to be removed for me to continue. But, she couldn't do it. I left my phone number and e-mail address and would be contacted in a number of days, she couldn't say how many. This was Jan. 6th. Jan. 13th I get an e-mail about the problem and that they had removed my incomplete application and I could try again. "Be sure to use a Windows machine running IE"! And thats why it took me eight days extra to apply for my CCW in Illinois.

This topic reminded me of something.. When I transferred to PA in 1995 (Federal LEO), I decided to get a PA Pistol Permit, even though I didn't really need one.
Went to the local sheriffs office, and filled out a simple form. Sheriff asked to see my LEO ID, called the agency to confirm who I was, and issued on the spot.
Funny thing was, I told my girl friend, who was with me, and had moved out to PA with me, she should get one to. She filled out the paperwork. The Sheriff read it, turned to me, and asked if I she "was ok?". I said yea, and he issued her hers while we sat there. I don't expect it is so easy now...

kinda it it...instead of asking you, they make a phone call for a background check...if all goes good, ya hand them $20 cash or check, no credit cards...they take your pic, put it on a laminated license and you walk out fully licensed to carry concealed. unless you are on philadelphia...then it is like being in new your from what i hear

The only thing they give you a break on as an ex LEO in North Carolina is that you don't have to take the 8 hour class and qualify. Since I moved here from out of state I took the class anyway so I would be sure I was up on the laws of this state, and did the qualification shooting.

You guys have to get psych exams? In Indiana, they just ask you if you have a history of mental illness. For the record, it took two months for me, but I had my fingerprints done the old-fashioned way in ink, they say it takes a few days with the electronic scanners.

Yes, you have to sign off so they can check the local hospitals to see it you have had treatment, etc. You don't have to get an exam. They did the electronic scanner on the prints also, but waiting for the hospitals to respond is the problem now in Mecklenburg County, or so they say. 50 days and counting.

Today I went down to the Mecklenberg County Sheriffs office to pick up a couple purchase permits that I had applied for. I figured I would buy what ever I was going to carry and get some range time in prior to receiving my CCW. When I applied for my CCW on 12/31/2013 I happened to glance up at a board that they have where you sit to fill out the paperwork. The board said that they were processing 93 other applications. I guess they post it there to save themselves the time of everyone asking how many people are before them. When I looked at it today it had 481 applications on the board. I think I'm going to get in plenty of range time before I see my CCW.

It took me 8 days from the day I mailed the application for my WI CCL to the day I received it over 2 years ago. Since then they've gotten better. I heard some getting theirs in 4 days. The county I'm in is irrelevant. All licensing is done at the state capital by the WI Department of Justice. No classes necessary for me - just proof of Military service (DD 214 or copy of Retired Military ID card) & $50. The license is good for 5 years.

Ouch...................here in Linn County Iowa you take a test and a firing range test. Take the paperwork to the sheriffs office and pay the $50 bucks...........a week later - there you go!!
In Iowa, if you don't want to go in and take a test (read lecture from someone) and take a firing test you can just go on-line for the written test. If you know enough to pass the test you print off your certificate and take that to the sheriff!!
Someday we will just cut out all the mess of picking on honest folks who wish to carry...........ala Vermont, Alaska, Arizona, etc.

About 15 min. Just show your honorable discharge paper from the service, no classes to take, fill out the form, sheriff does a back ground check there on the spot. If all is good hands you a five year permit ($50).

Once you get your CCW, you will no longer have to get purchase permits. At least in Jackson County. Before I got my CCW the permits were issued on the spot. You are in the wrong county

Doesn't it burn you guys that you have to pay for the privilege to buy a gun? Does the sheriff have the right to limit or refuse to sell you the purchase permit?

Here in Ga. As long as you don't have any drug charges, firearm related crimes, or a history of mental illness you simply pay 75.00 get finger printed and wait for it in the mail. What do they teach in these classes ya'll keep talking about? Is it laws or defensive handgun training?

The class I took was mostly on the laws. Where you can carry, when you can and can't use deadly force, etc. A little bit on the nuts and bolts, like different types of holsters, night sights, etc. It's not a handgun training class. They expect you to be able to handle your gun before you take the class. Then a 30 shot range qualification, and that was about it.

I guess he does if you have a record, mental problems etc, The first one I applied for took 3 days. The second took 14 days to come through. When my CCW comes through I won't need to apply for each permit I can just purchase any time.

News reports today here in IL say the first CCW permits should be mailed this weekend. First day we could apply was Jan. 6th. So ..... if in fact some get their permits next week, it's less than 60 days when by statute they have up to 120. Not too bad in my book.
My application went in Jan 7 so I'll hopefully know soon.

Here in CA the law requires a class on at least the law and gun safety.
Unfortunately, there are some instructors that are only in it to make a few dollars and they don't "teach" anything. Since the sheriff doesn't really do any oversight, they get away with it.
The good instructors teach what the law requires and cover a little on how to shoot and defensive techniques/tactics.

One thing to note:
If you have a pressing reason to get your permit quickly, (domestic violence, receiving threats etc...) Your county may have expedited emergency approvals for you on a temporary basis.

That would be nice. In CA those are all reasons to deny the permit. Yes, even if you are the one being harassed.

Macomb county Michigan.
Five months for me.
Six for my wife as the FBI could not
get a god copy of her prints,
so they had to manually verify everything.

It took me 26 days here in Washington State. I was told by the Sheriffs Dept. that it depends on where you live. A buddy lives in a smaller town just north of me and it only too 2 weeks to get his last month. The biggest factor is how many applications the particular agency you are applying through are trying to process or are backlogged.
Washington Sate law requires you to be either granted or notified of denial withing 30days if you are a state resident.

CCW in Mass
I dropped off the firearms training cert on 12/10. Was called a week later for interview and fingerprinting. Also informed that if I wanted a CCW I would need to submit a letter stating why I felt I needed to carry a concealed weapon. I went home and hand wrote a letter saying that I needed to carry for the personal security of my family and myself. That was good enough. The CCW (called a Class A License to Carry in Mass) came through on 2/9. All permits have to be approved by the Colonel of the Mass State Police and the local Chief of Police in the town you reside in.
The LTC is good for 6 yrs and costs $100.

Training in Mass
The training in Mass is the NRA Basic Pistol Course.
This is what a revolver looks like and how it operates and this is a semi and how it operates.
Basic safe handling and overview of firearms laws and regulations. Very high level stuff.
Fire 100 rds of .22LR under supervision of instructor.
8 hours all told

Did they require you to shoot a .22LR or could you use your own carry gun? The NRA Basic Pistol Course is really good stuff, but doesn't require the students to shoot only a .22 gun.

No, you weren't allowed to bring your own gun. It was a Ruger Mark II semi target pistol. The instructor also had his .45ACP there for anyone who wanted to pop off a few rounds. I did but 3 of the ladies who took the course with me didn't.

2 months, but in other PA counties it can take 15 minutes. No qualifications in PA. Just submit your paperwork, pay $20, submit a photograph, get fingerprinted, go through the background check, and you're good to go!

Colorado shall issue in 90 days or you sue the County Sheriff on his dime.

It's up to the Chief in your town here in Mass. He/she can determine you are unsuitable and deny the LTC. Not a problem yet here in the western part of the state but huge problem in and around Boston.
I don't know the fate of anyone who challenged the "unsuitable" determination but the law says you can challenge the ruling if you feel its "capricious".

2 months 3 days
In Illinois they have 90 days (if you send electronic finger prints) to issue according to the statute. Got mine in 2 months and 3 days. They have to give the local county or city 30 days to object by law so that turnaround was not too bad.
Getting it at all in Illinois is still hard to believe.

Well when I lived in Albany NY (late 1960s) after trying for well over two years I gave up and moved to a neighboring town. The city had dozens of excuses, no application blanks, no finger print cards, they were not doing any this month, too busy ETC. Then if you managed to circumnavigate all that BS it would go into a cabinet and then they would CONSIDER IT for a few years, that is if they did not lose it.
Then at that point moved to the town it was a mandatory 6 month residency to apply for a CCWP. It took two months after that to get fingerprints as the cops were always busy when your appointment time came and they would gladly give you a new date a couple weeks hence. Then after a friend of a friend (a VIP) made a call to the chief of police on my behalf things started happining and I got my permit. I got an unrestricted carry permit, something that is now hard to get in urban parts of this state.
So from the first day I tried to get my CCWP it took close to 3 years till I actually had it.
PS, In NY you need this permit to even own/posses any hand gun even if it never leaves your residence.

Really? In the whole state of New York you can't even own a handgun unless you have a CCWP? Or is that just New York City?

5 Months....
Back when I got mine about 15 years ago, you had to belong to a gun club and range ( be a member) and take a NRA certified 3 month course that included bookwork, tests, range time, field stripping, and timed shooting trials. Then came the fingerprinting, application, and a 60 day wait for pending approval, with the chance to go before a review board to prove need to carry. The instruction was clear, and laid out what to expect in case you should shoot someone, and I felt we left the course well prepared.
A friend of mine went to go sign up for a class 2 years ago, and the next day we went shopping for the Berretta he wanted. He got the pistol, we took it out onto the range, and he could barely keep it on the paper. Many did not even hit paper. Upon leaving, we ran into his future " Instructor" and the guy said " Hey, let me see one of your targets and I'll sign off on it"
He got certified the next day.
Personally, if I could do it all over again, I wouldnt change a thing (for me)
