Best Concealed Holster w/ Shorts?(SD9VE)
Hey guys. I recently purchased an SD9VE S&W. I rarely EVER wear pants (always wear thick athletic shorts) and I want to start carrying this weapon concealed in the near future.
What holsters have you found work well for this application? Not going to be running with this gun or anything, but will be packing it around while walking etc. in shorts and a loose t-shirt.
Looking at Smartcarry and Tactipac deep conceal holsters..any personal experiences with these? Any others i should look at?
Thanks in advance

I would look into a N8^2 (squared) holster. They have a strong single clip and are backed with suede leather that gives the holster friction to stay in place.

A belly band would work well in this application. I am very fond of mine.

Nice. Can't believe I've never heard of these.
Are they fairly comfortable? I'll be packing an SD9VE.
Also it seems as though you can wear these around your abdomen as well as your waistline correct?

Ya know, all the sudden I'm thinking...
What did Magnum wear??? He carried a large 1911, shorts & tshirt...
can't remember it ever printing, or even being seen until he whipped it out...

The weapon you want to carry is fairly tall, (think its about 5.5" in overall height, around a G19 size piece). I can not imagine stuffing that in my pants in a smartcarry holster completely below the belt and it being comfortable or at least making me look like I am exceedingly happy all the time. If a smartcarry is what you want to use, you may want to check out getting something with a shorter overall height.
I find with shorts when I am wearing a belt, I can carry how I do in regular pants. In the summer I tend to wear a couple of different holsters and swap them out as needed to allow any sweat to fully dry. If my shirt is more clingy I might go to a single stack instead of a double stack to minimize printing.
You may want to consider holsters that will not readily absorb sweat as other materials might. I like those made of kydex with a full shield or made with bridle leather or perhaps man made materials.
If I am not going to be wearing a belt and have cargo or similar looser shorts on, then I pocket carry a small single stack or a j frame.

I too am an elastic short/sweats person around the house.
Seems to me that carrying with sweat or other elastic top shorts it will be difficult to carry anything unless you use the Belly Band holster.
The only other way I see it is to use the ties in sweats/shorts to help hold the weight. Even thick elastic may not suffice.
Almost any OWB holster seems to allow the grip to stick outward from the body.
IWB may not fit sweats/shorts as well unless they are like cargo shorts with a belt or snug fitting. Then IWB may become uncomfortable.

i use a remora in my bb shorts all day when im kicking it around the house/neighborhood. As long as I tie the drawstring fairly snug it stays pretty well.

Aloha,
Thanks for asking.
Now that Hawaii will be forced to issue CCW, this is a great question.
I wear loose shorts with elastic waistbands.
No way any firearm attached to the shorts will stay up on my "masculine local body".
The weight of car keys and 2 EDC small folding knives pull my shorts down.
Like many local guys, I carry a murse or small messenger bag large enough to hold a 7" tablet.
I always wear large, baggy, loose fitting, LOUD Aloha shirts.
Sometimes, I even wear suspenders under the Aloha shirt to keep my shorts up.
I'm thinking that to CCW, I will have to carry in the murse.
Magnum kept his 1911 in the small of his back.

A good solid gun belt and a forward can't minimizes issues.

I have one of these for certain occasions and if worker with the SD9VE I had. You can get them MUCH cheaper on ebay. I wouldn't want to wear it for EDC, but I'm a little "fluffy" so I also wouldn't want a belly band. .

IMO your best option is to trade your SD on a Kahr CM and get a pocket good holster

I have a good belt but just altered my Blade-Tech paddle with a little cant. The Blade-Tech doesn't give you much cant - about 7° or so. Yes, it does help but the design of most Kydex/Poly holsters seem to build in too much "stuff" to allow the gun to sit against my side. That's why I'm considering a pancake leather. This image is with no cant:
The AlienGear sits very flat against my side and you wouldn't know I was carrying unless you ask or I lift my shirt.

Actually you may be a good candidate for a belly band. All joking aside, this is no different than the elastic back supports which I have 2. Mine are about 8" wide and I could see either having a gun pouch included.
They help a great deal with maintaining my posture and support while walking. They do improve my profile a little too

I wear jean/cargo shorts with a belt, so I don't have that issue. But at one time I DID carry an IWB holster with a steel clip and drawstring shorts. I just tied the drawstring extra tight to support the weight. It even worked with a Beretta 92.

Interesting answers thanks guys. I'm leaning towards the belly band holsters. I've seen them online with a bra-style shoulder strap. Would you recommend just the band or one with a shoulder strap to support the weight better?

It may be more personal taste for the final decision of which one and color. I don't see an option for a shoulder strap.

Sorry to go OT, but the first thing I thought of when I read this was "Blazing Saddles"
"'Scuse me while I whip this out..."

All in all it should only cost me 5 dollars and a visit to my grandma's house haha.
Needless to say, its a lot less expensive and it will have the quality control only a grandmother could have
On a serious note, im mostly doing it this way so i can get a perfect fit. I'll also be able to avoid the velcro strap, the part of the holsters many people claim are uncomfortable, by sewing it together to form a continuous band.
Ill update this thread with pictures once i get on this project.

Custom by grandma could certainly let you make it fit "you". I'm not too sure I would sew it together to make a continuous band. If you ever need to remove it - it might make it more difficult. The Velcro shouldn't be too uncomfortable as it too will give a little - just get it in the right place when designing the band/holster.

See what Grandma recommends to line the inside or the outside of the pockets to help mitigate sweat through. That is a beef I have with most belly bands used in the summer. Maybe a light weight moisture resistant material sewn in for the pockets would help to keep the sweat from entering the pockets. See the Galco belly band as an example.
I'd vote against making it a continuous loop and use velcro in order to make it easier to put on and take off. Properly fastened together, I don't remember having a problem with the velcro parts. In days of old, they used a hook and loop that looked similar to what is used in bra straps to connect the pieces.

You might also consider a belly band made from 8" wide elastic.
Sew a piece of Velcro to the inside of the elastic. Then buy a injection molded or Kydex shell (Fobus, Blade-Tech, Galco, Blackhawk) and glue the matching Velcro to the proper side of the shell and let it hold the holster in place along with the elastic. This might eliminate concerns with sweat. Maybe have grandma add a sweat shield to the shell on the side against your body - also attach with Velcro.
Maybe grandma can start an Internet Business

The short answer, none with a gun that heavy. Even if you find a holster that conceals, the gun w/loaded mag will be trying to pull your pants down all day. Tried it with my Compact 9, finally ran up the white flag, got a smaller carry gun, (Shield).
