Default Reciprocity question

I have a Texas ccl and am getting ready to drive thru Missouri, Iowa and Colorado. Question is does Iowa honor Texas ccl. I pulled up some maps and most said yes but one said no. I want to be legal. Also are the rules the same? I am willing to purchase literature if it is available in something other than a huge book. Thanks

The 2014 United States Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the 50 States (Gun Laws for All Fifty States, 18th Edition): Esq. J. Scott Kappas: 9780972548953: Amazon.com: Books@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41jH%2BGBGIJL.@@AMEPARAM@@41jH%2BGBGIJL is typically $8 and very comprehensive.
On the web, HandGunLaw.US is fairly accurate in their reporting of carry laws and reciprocity, as well. If you click on your state, it will download a .PDF file which will show all states in red that you CANNOT carry in, based on reciprocity. You need to allow the site to open a popup window, however. It would appear that Iowa does offer reciprocity. Colorado is allowed with your resident permit.

Concealed Carry Permit Reciprocity Maps - USA Carry

This is the site I use.... it is saying you are good to go in all mentioned states, including Iowa. They also have detailed laws if you click on the state, in case you actually want to read their state laws yourself.

I would be careful with printed CCW literature... the 50 states change laws/reciprocity agreements so quickly that it may not be updated when you need it.... I would double check a trusted online source If I were going by a book....

Good luck and have a safe trip!!!!

PS--- its a good idea to research all the states to make sure you notify LEO if needed in the states that require it....

I always find it a good idea to find what the law is by actually going to the state in question's web sites.

Also check the silly little other things like prohibited places and LEO notification during a traffic stop

Best bet in my view ~ Call the state police in the states you plan on traveling through and ask the question direct.

here is a site from the Texas Department of Safety that should tell you. Just place your cursor over the states. You will need to check each state for differences in places that prohibit carry.

ALWAYS tell a LEO (who stops you for speeding, or whatever) that you're carrying or have one in the car. It has actually gotten me out of speeding tickets, twice. The overall stop always takes longer - but you get out of the ticket - which is nice.

Your question really points out how silly some of the laws are. The law abiding citizen will do the right thing to avoid breaking the law. As much effort as we may put into this we may still "slip" because of the complicated writings of laws and variations from state to state. And it seems if you "slip" (no matter how serious) you may lose some or all gun rights.

===

To your OP - If you or anyone who may be traveling with you has a Smart Phone, there is an app that should be kept current with information regarding reciprocity laws - one of the apps I believe is called CCW and cost $0.99.

I would not rely on any printed publications as the laws change too frequently to keep up with in print. The rules from state to state are NOT THE SAME. I always go to Handgunlaw.us first and print a copy for each state I will be visiting. I read through it to see where I am not allowed to carry and any requirement to inform police in case I am stopped. If I read anything that leaves me with questions, I go to the state's own website and look up the law and print it out if I think it might be useful.

For example, I live in Missouri and I went to New Orleans a few weeks ago (after Mardi Gras). On Handgunlaw.us I read that there are conflicting laws in Louisiana about whether you can carry in restaurants that serve alcohol. So I went to the LA State Police web page for concealed carry and decided based on their info that it would be OK to carry in a restaurant that served alcohol so long as it did not have a Class A-General retail permit (where you must be 18 years old to enter). Since I was not going to any bars, I decided I was OK to carry. (Some will disagree with my assessment and point out another law that prohibits carry in any restaurant serving alcohol, but I decided to ignore that other law and carry a printed copy of the LA State Police website with me just in case. I am very careful to be carry fully concealed, so I was not worried about being found out.)

A quick look at Iowa's info on Handgunlaw.us shows that they do honor Texas permits and their rules look easy to live with IMO.

Have a safe trip.

Mr Aiken did that in NJ and got arrested and charged, had to be Pardoned by NJ Governor Christie. And did spend jail time.

True. My son-in-law and I have both gotten out of tickets by telling LEOs that we had permits but were not carrying when pulled over.

The law in Michigan says that you do not have to notify them of your CFL unless you have a gun. Making an LEO's job less stressful is always appreciated by the officer.
