Looking forward to a day of private CC lessons..
... with an NRA certified instructor, and retired NYS BCI. Talked this am- "bring 100 rounds and your intended method of carry" is that cool or what? He's dropping off some lit to get me started. It'll probably be in a few weeks. I need to get my Kangaroo Carry ordered, I'm pretty sure it's the method of carry that will work for me (fingers crossed). I'm kinda' excited about this ! (and pray I'll never need it). 21 years of wingin' it (no instruction) and really not much carrying. The world is changing, even here in the Adirondacks, either that or I'm paying attention more. I'll keep ya'll posted.
John

That sounds like fun. Will it be one on one, or a whole classroom full of students?

It will be one on one I believe, nothing was said about anyone else.

The lit that was dropped off was a copy of Concealed Carry magazine and the book Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals USCCA edition by Michael Martin. I'm about a hundred pages into it already. Good stuff so far. Anybody familiar with it?

Well, the first 100 pages were an easy read, the second 100 have been much slower with necessary time for reflection between pages. What I have discovered is that I have been for 21 years a CCC person (Casual Concealed Carry). Ya just don't know what ya don't know until ya know different! Thank God no incidents have arose. Recommended reading for anyone who carries, right from day 1, don't wait,..on to the training soon...

Great idea! I would love to hear about it after your completion, I have said for some time that some instruction like what you describe would be worth while. Please provide details, enjoy! Thanks

Well, we got started about 8:45 am and finished up at 11:30. It was started with a USCCA PowerPoint presentation (all one on one). Then to the range, an indoor 50' range, for drills. 100 rounds worth. Most were very close distances, 25' and under down to bad breath distances. Commands were given by my instructor that involved proficiency, shoot and move, shoot while moving, low light conditions, proficiency with a flashlight, firing in low light with a flashlight, and drawing only (which was probably my weakest function hence no drawing and firing). That I can practice with snap caps and dry firing. There were some other variations that I am missing here, but you get the idea. The addition of live fire elevates the sences incredibly. I can't imagine what someone firing back would do. I've always respected what our military and LEOs do for us, but I just want to say thank you for your service to our communities and our nation! My plan is to avoid, retreat, and stop a continuing threat as a last resort to defend me and my loved ones from fatal threats rather than wade in like you guys do, again I salute you! In saying that I know you can't be at my side 24/7 (and don't want you there) so I am glad to have started the ball rolling to enhance my first line of defense. Better late than never! All in all a great morning, lot's to think about and practice (train). My 640 38spl performed flawlessly (no surprise) with absolutely no recoil issues, another 100-200 rounds? No problem! Follow up probably in 6 months. Highly recommended!!!
Stay safe , John

You cannot have enough training as long as it's good training. I always wonder why people complain about being required to attend any type of training in conjunction with getting their concealed weapons license. You should strive to get MORE training whenever you can.

That's a good report and sounds like a decent class with a knowledgeable instructor.
There are two reasons people don't like classes in conjunction with getting a license. First, they think they already know what they need to know and how to do it. For some reason, American males believe they were born knowing how to shoot. Women are usually better students for this very reason, they have no preconceptions.
The second reason people don't like the classes is a pet peeve of mine. More often than not, those who put on these classes aren't good instructors. Consequently, the classes are boring. I've been through a few of them and nothing is worse than an instructor reading a Power Point slide show to you. For crying out loud, I can read! What I expect from an instructor is not to have him read the law to me, but to explain it in a way that most can understand it. Very few do that.
Good instructors make the class interesting. They involve the students and get them to ask questions.

The PowerPoint was probably designed for those that did not read the book (it's just as much a shame for someone who won't read as someone who can't) and once he figured out I did read it he buzzed through it a lot quicker. That also made for more time for personal concerns such as the wife's apprehension about me wanting to EDC. Moral- do your homework! After having this 1/2 day of instruction I think that it might not be a bad idea for everyone to have it, not sure about it being regulated by big brother (I am not fond of control) and the benefits will continue to grow with practice and training. Having direction on how to train, drills to use for practice is so well worth it. Boring? Not for a second! Now I need reloading equipment to get my ammo costs down (I'm working on acquiring some used equipment from a friend who no longer uses his)! Follow up sessions in the future.
Stay safe, John

Yeah, it sounds like you had a good instructor John. I wish we had more instructors that were more concerned with instructing and less concerned with taking people's money.

Mock if you like, but starting with someone who's never had instruction before, 100 rounds is a lot of shooting for one day. I've been in several classes where we didn't shoot more than 100 rounds in 8 hours of instruction. There just wasn't time to do more.
I've also seen the results of shooters from classes where they shot a lot more. Learning to shoot is a lot more than just throwing lead downrange.

Well, going from 15 rounds in 21 years of owning this fine firearm to 100 rounds in one day with instruction is better than giving up on the idea altogether. I did what I was asked. "Bring a hundred rounds and your method of conceal carry". Unless of course you're superman and don't want the help Mr. Police Officer. You gonna come from western NY when some drug crazed wacko comes bustin' my door down, I'm thinking not. This happened to be the very first opportunity in my life to get some instruction and I took it and happen to be pretty pleased about it. If you read back on my earlier post I thanked you for your service unless of course you just stuck that police officer icon on your profile to impress us. If so it ain't workin' for me anyway.

Put those two together and there's your answer to why people complain.
Most people I know who have recently gotten concealed carry licenses are looking for some kind of instruction. I have helped several, not in any "tactical" sense, but with general stuff, like safety, actual manipulation of the weapon, safe storage, Georgia law regarding carrying in vehicles, and some basic accuracy work.
Just don't tell me I have to go to a government approved training with 30 more people, led by an instructor who may or may not be qualified.
With that said, there are plenty of good and useful voluntary training sessions put on by several Law Enforcement Agencies in Middle Georgia. I am in no way disparaging these efforts.
