Default Milwaukee County Sheriff Speech

Not sure if anything has been posted on this but Milwaukee County Sheriff, David Clarke, became somewhat controversial with his strong encouragement of carry rights.

I was sent this video today of a speech he made at the U.S. Conceal Carry Association event. Good stuff. His speech begins about 2 min 45 secs into the video. Don't have to listen to whole thing to get the point. I'm glad to hear a County Sheriff in a large county understanding why the public's right to carry is important.

Refreshing to see that professional, ethical law enforcement leadership does exist!!! I wish more chiefs would take Sheriff Clarke's position.... when the cops and the citizens work together, the system works so much better for everyone.

Sheriff is an elected office, with constitutional and statutory powers beyond the reach of other elected officials. Police Chiefs and Commissioners work at the pleasure of the mayor, chosen for conformity with the offical doctrine, and unlikely to express any degree of opposition.

True, but not always with a bad outcome. Case in point: The new Chief of Police in Detroit promotes "good americans" arming and defending themselves.

The vast majority (like 90%) of the county sheriffs here in Colorado share this sheriff's point-of-view. It is indeed refreshing to hear these powerful leaders in law enforcement supporting our second amendment rights. If you live in a county where the sheriff is a strong 2A supporter, please contact them and thank them for their support.

You're unlikely to hear this from a police chief, regardless of their personal opinion. Like others posted the chief is a political animal and if they want to keep their job, or get another, they'll tow the company line. I watched it first hand for three decades.

Sounds like a chief I know of, he seems to think that guns other then those in the hands of law enforcement are evil, and that once used for evil, they are forever tainted (like the gun takes on a personality or something) and can never be used for 'good' and must be destroyed ... and his definition of 'evil' is pretty freaking vague. From carrying concealed w/o a permit on up makes a gun evil.

It's very encouraging when any member of law enforcement speaks out in favor of the armed, responsible citizen. It would appear that, as legal CCW approaches it's second decade of growth in the USA, the good behavior of those of us who carry have diffused the arguments of the naysayers that the streets would run red with blood if the average citizen is allowed to carry a weapon. It's hard to argue with the facts; the gloom & doom predicted by many just didn't come to pass. Well done all my fellow legally armed citizens!!

Sheriff Clark is a rock-star in these parts. The mayor and police chief are complete liberal weenies. Sheriff Clark is the only one with the guts to stand up to thugs. He's a realist and openly advocates that good citizens arm themselves.

He himself said that the police can't be everywhere all the time and that help may be minutes away when nanoseconds count (I'm paraphrasing of course).

We have alot of rural county sheriff's and other law enforcement officials around here that feel like Sheriff Clark but no so much in the larger cities. Unfortunately, the larger cities are were nearly all the serious crime is.

Yes, this is true, and there's been a number of recent incidences in Detroit where homeowners and others with CCW permits have thwarted criminal intent. One guy witnessed two perps trying to steal a car and held them on the ground at gunpoint until the cops came. Not sure why the two guys didn't just try to run away, but whatever. Too stupid? I guess they didn't want to see if the armed guy was serious. I mean, what if they had decided to do that, just get up and start running? If the armed guy shot them, they'd likely allege they were shot while unarmed and running. I can see all sorts of legal muck the shooter would then be subjected to.

The Chief Of Police made positive statements in recognition of this kind of defense so it was rather refreshing to see and hear. Still, you can't deny the legal morass that can result in armed confrontation.
