My Carry Options
I'm going back to work next week, part time, at a pawn shop in Macon, GA. Even though this is a high-class shop, and is in a nice section, MaConGA isn't generally a nice place.
I will be carrying, but it will be concealed carry. Right now, I'm thinking three different ways.
(1) Kimber Pro Carry strong side in something like a belt slide. I would carry an extra mag in a left front pocket, with another extra stashed conveniently. I have a Galco holster, but I'm not crazy about it. Years back, I was well pleased carrying a S&W 39-2 in an old Don Hume Belt Slide. I would carry 230 grain ball ammo.
(2) S&W Model 36-1 in a Lobo Pancake, loaded with 158 grain Buffalo Bore heavy +p ammo, with a speed loader in the pocket, or possibly, another (2") j-frame in a pocket.
(3) S&W Model 12-2 four inch barrel roundbutt in a Lobo snap-loop Pancake. I would load the alloy framed K-frame with Remington Golden Sabers. Again, either a speed loader, or a j-frame in a pocket.
I have to admit, I'm a j-frame fan, and I'm leaning heavily toward the 3" Chiefs Special. According to reliable sources, the heavy BB ammo runs right at 1100 fps out of the three inch barrel. I have tested that ammo in my 36-1, and it shoots to point of aim out to 15 yards. Recoil isn't nearly as punishing as full-house .357 magnums from a 2.5 inch Model 19. In short, I have a lot of confidence in that gun and load, and have practiced fairly extensively with it.
I will probably order some kind of minimal holster from Lobo for the Commander sized, alloy frame Pro-Carry. It could well see a lot of use if it works out to be "handy." Nothing like a .45.
We'll see about the 12-2. I haven't fired a whole lot of ammo through it, so I'm not nearly as familiar with it as I am the other two. Of course, I have probably fired more center-fire handgun rounds through some kind of 4" K frame than anything else, just not the Airweight.
Whatever else, it gives me a good excuse to spend a lot of time making brass.

Red, I would carry the Kimber on the belt and the J frame in a pocket with at least a reload for the Kimber.
I worked weekends at a gun shop for a few years. I told the guys that I supervised that nothing would probably happen but if it did, it would happen very quick and it would be very violent.
I took no chances. We also had a Benelli Nova 12 ga behind the counter.

Your best bet is to go w/the weapon system you're most familiar with & that sounds like the M36. If you are forced to use your weapon the event will be so sudden and violent that muscle memory will take over and you'll revert to whatever training you've done.

You should buy yourself a used Glock. If you do get involved in a shooting, your firearm will become "evidence" and you may never see that Kimber again. YOU would not miss a Glock, LOL!!
I happen to have a belt slide holster for a 1911 that I will give you. This one.
I prefer the Don Hume belt slide holster, like this.
I also have a Milt Sparks Summer Special for a Commander that I would sell, as I am not a fan of IWB carry. I may have worn it a half dozen times. I would like $50.00 for it. I can drop them in the mail tomorrow after physical terrorpy. Keep the belt slide, wear the MSSS a few days and send me a check or return it.

All good advice. Thanks. I am more familiar with the Model 36, but I am very familiar with the 1911 type, and I have more than 1K rounds through this particular gun now. I have at least four magazines proven reliable with this gun. I believe the first centerfire handgun I ever fired was an old USGI 1911A1.
As for Mr Colby Bruce . . . . . . his kindness and good looks are exceeded only by his generosity. Thank you, Suh for the offer, and I have pm'ed my address to you. I'll just overlook the Glop reference. Actually, I'm in the Kimber pretty cheap, less than $350. I have no sentimental or emotional ties to it, and consider it a good opportunity to use a high quality 1911 as a carry gun without having busted the budget to acquire it.

Not the greatest for concealment IMHO, but if I was to be in a gunfight I think I'd rather have a 1911 in my hands than anything else.

Wow, great deal. I paid $650 for mine and thought I stole it. Great gun BTW, that's the one I'd carry under the circumstances you'll be in, absolutely reliable weapon.

Wear a nice, long lab coat and carry a pistol-gripped Mossberg 12 gauge "Persuader" on a single point sling underneath! You'll look very professional, and the bad guys will soil themselves when you lift it over the counter!

I would have no problems doing this now, presuming you still have the gun. But as others have said, I'd prefer not to have one of those taken as evidence, never(?) to be seen again.
$350 for a Kimber? You did steal it.
Whatever you have on your belt, I'm with Kanewpaddle in that a j-frame in a front pocket is always a good idea. A Model 38 in the right front pocket is my b.u.g. in the winter and my primary in the summer.

I would go with the Kimber Pro Carry! I got my Kimber Pro Carry for $10!!
I won it by having the winning ticket in the Friends of the NRA raffle!

This. By far the most important factor. Pick the gun that you said this about.

If youre going to stay with the J frame consider getting a 442 or something similar to back it up. I see places like pawn shops to be high risk businesses where there might be the likelihood of two or more assailants. Be sure to carry sufficient reloads.

I'm so anal about sticking to the same weapons platform that before I carry my Colt Cobra, in lieu of the 442, I'll take it to the range and run a box of 50 through it.
