On a daily basis, how many reloads do you have for your EDC?

And why?

Ingrained habit. I drilled for years to replace what I fired. It is second nature to have a Speed Strip in my pocket.

Always 1 if carrying the 229 or 226, always 2 if carrying the Combat Masterpiece or the PM9...
Why? 20-ish rounds is the best balance of rounds I think I might need with carry weight & bulk.

I carry two reloads and a back-up gun as well. Why? Trained that way.

Usually one. I live in metropolitan city setting. Police response is probably only a minute or two away. If I resided in a country setting where it took a half hour or more for help to arrive I'd be checking off 3 or more.

All the cartridges I carry except .22s are reloads. Larry

Two revolvers Two speed loaders and a speed strip.

At work I carry a S&W 686, 4 speedloaders, a backup gun, and a speed strip. The least I carry is my backup, a S&W 37, and 2 speedstrips.

I have always carried at minimum two reloads. Either two extra magazines in a phone case on my belt or two speed strips in my watch pocket or during the winter two speed loaders in a vest pocket. It feels comfortable, an old habit from my uniform days I guess.

Carry a glock 19 with a glock 17 spare mag. If i go to the big city (St. Louis) ill take 2 extra mags.

Just my 642 no-lock loaded with five of rounds Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel .38 Special +P 135 grain JHPs, and five of the same load in a Bianchi 6-round speed strip.

I agree somewhat, but a uniformed police officer open carrying has a different task at hand than a CCW holder. It's a bit like recommending we all drive police cruisers because the police do.

Voted 3 or more. At least one for primary, a BUG and one for the BUG. I have carried less, but also have carried more it just depends.

Shield .40, 6 + 1, 2 - 7 rounders. Its just what I'm comfortable with.

I'd guess it's a good idea to carry atleast one reload for each gun. I like to have several with a J frame. They're so small anyway. I'd also like to have a second and third feeding device for a semi auto. People don't think about the fact that a magazine can turn into an ammunition storage device and that having another one to fight with might be useful even if I have to transfer the rounds from one to the other to fire them. As long as I make breakfast tomorrow sure hey why not?

I don't compare what a LEO carries or uses with what I carry or use. I'm not an LEO, I don't intentionally put myself in hazardous situation; I have the option of deliberately NOT putting myself in hazardous situations. Due to my physical aliments, there's no way I could carry two extra mags and a BUG. Not going to happen.

I pay attention and avoid those places with raised risks. It's worked for many years. If it ever happens, it happens. If we could avoid all risks, we'd live forever. Hasn't happened yet.

Kimber Ultra Carry 7+1 and a 7 round mag on the other hip. If I need more than 15, I'm in trouble!

If I have a single-stack semi-auto on my belt, then one spare. If I have the J-frame in my pocket, then two speed strips. That'll give me 15 rounds.

If I need more than 15 rounds the legal bills will kill me anyway...

Four speed loaders, two for my CA 44 Bulldog and two for my S&W 642-1..

One revolver and one strip usually, sometimes two. If I need more than 10-12 rounds of .38, .357, or .44 Special, I'm in way too deep for a revolver and better find a long gun.

Same here. One seven round speed strip containing six rounds of .38 Special is always in my change pocket.

I'm not quite retired, so have to carry more than I otherwise would. My back sure feels it after a long day on my feet.

Just a thought, but if we are so old or feeble to stand and fight or run and can't take a battering for very long, seems to me that more rounds is a good thing.

Totally agree with you there brother, but I'd rather not have to use my pocket knife if the long gun that I'm forced to seek out isn't forthcoming. I'll fire and maneuver with whatever I have and not have to make excuses in the process of bringing out a scattergun or just getting out of dodge.

EDC = S&W 638 with CT-405 grips. 2 - 5 rd speed strips reloads.

I understand if you're still in the job. Not everyone here is an active duty LEO, yet they load up before leaving the house. Still curious.

I have mags and speed strips in the truck but don't usually carry more than what's in the gun.
Mostly carry LCP and 642.
If I want to carry more ammo on a regular basis my G19 is an alternative without requiring a timeout to reload after every five shots.

How often does average Joe reload on the street during a self defense situation? I'm sure it happens but I don't recall hearing of it.

There's all sorts of situations where it would make sense to reload even if it wasn't used. Being mugged in a rough neighborhood. After ending that life threatening situation there's no telling how many of the thug's pals might show up.

The question was what was daily for me. I'm okay with what I carry doing my normal routine, but if I'm doing a job in a sketchy area or after hours I'll have the .45 and the J-frame, with at least two extra mags for the .45 and two reloads for the 38.

Just a snubby smith with +P. If I take my LCP instead, it has 6, on the motorcycle I leave the chamber empty in case of a crash.

No spare rounds.

I am much more comfortable with 5 +P in the 637 than I am with 6 or 7 380s in the LCP

I don't expect to ever need one, but if I do, I am a good shot with which ever gun I carry.

If I was retired, it would be a revolver with a speed strip, or a 1911 with a spare mag. SOON!

I don't remember who makes it but I seem to remember a company that makes a pair of suspenders that fits under your shirt and hooks to your belt keepers to distribute the load across your whole upper body instead of just your hips

2 spare magazines for each pistol I'm carrying. Plus extra ammo in the vehicle. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Back when my EDC was a G19, I carried no reloads. Now that it's a M36, a single COMP-1 is plenty for me.

Carry what you feel is suitable for your assessed threat level.

Carrying "reloads"? Not really a great idea, according to most (including Mas Ayoob)

There's a balance between prepared and dragging a utility belt. It's the same sort of reason I don't carry two spare tires.

That whole "one is none, two is one and three is about right" strikes me as nonsense. One is on, two is two, and three is a pain in the ***... particularly in the summer.

LEO is a different story. Their job is to head towards trouble.

If I wanted to wear a utility belt I would be Batman.

I carry the same way except I use Hornady Critical Defense 110 FTX rounds.

But none of those 'most' (including Mas Ayoob) has been able to document a single case of self-defense where reloads were an issue.

This is just my opinion and worth as much as you paid for it, but I'd advise just to use factory SD ammo. Check each round for signs that might indicate a bad round before you load them in you gun/magazines etc.

The good news is that this is America, so if you want to carry reloaded ammo, by all means do so, just be well informed before you make either choice.

What's "wrong" about the admonition to not roll the dice when you don't have to or take a chance on a risk that's easily mitigated?

Carry what you want, but in a public climate where lawful self-defense is largely ignored at best or villified at worst, I'm sticking with factory ammo only. Hotshot DAs looking to pad their conviction record don't need any additional help.
