Permit versus license
Okay, never mind the 2nd Amendment/RKBA/"I don't need no stinking license" discussion, please.....
Does your state call your carry "item" a license or a permit?
Is it CCW, CHL, or called something else?
In Texas it is a CHL, a concealed handgun license.
I understand that in Florida it is CCW, concealed carry weapon, and that it covers the concealed carry of any weapon, from handgun to switchblade knife to club. Am I correct?
Other states............?????
Just curious.

Florida calls it "Concealed Weapon or Firearm License." It does authorize "other weapons" but why bring a knife to a gunfight. I have a couple "automatic knives", never take them out of the house. Joe

In California it is a PERMIT. Refered to colloquially as a CCW permit. In CA it covers only firearms. Knives and impact weapons are seriously frowned on here. Shooting someone is OK, sometimes. Knifing them is considered bad form.

Since I'm in the Commonwealth of Kentucky now,
and the State Police issue a 'License' as a Concealed Deadly Weapons Lic.
One can carry any type of weapon/firearm one desires concealed with this license.
Open Carry, no license required.
Life is good in the Commonwealth

Dave

So, to further the thought of robertrwalsh, one presumes a blackjack to the skull is highly inappropriate when bullets will do just fine thank-you- very-much. I'll remember that if I ever go to California again.

BTW, this is all very interesting to me. Terms like CCL and CWP are not heard very often. I have NEVER even come close to hearing CDWP - I love that one.

+1 on the FL thing. you can carry anything deemed a "weapon" except slapjacks, and brass knuckles. it is a "concealed weapon or firearm license". God bless the "gunshine state"...

Washington State officially calls it a "license to carry a concealed pistol." Usually referred to as CPL, concealed pistol license.

Mine is an "Alabama Pistol License-Unrestricted" it allows carrying a handgun concealed on my person or in my vehicle. We now also have open carry, not sure if that requires a license or not. All it means to me is that I don't have to conceal all that well. We didn't have to conceal real well before the recent open carry law, so I'm not sure how important that is.

Wisconsin calls it a Concealed Carry License. Valid 5 years unless revoked. Open carry is also valid in Wisconsin and has been for many years for those 18 and older, no license required, however it's not exercised by residents often.

As Keith44spl noted, life is good in the fifth most fun-friendly state in the country, according to a survey published last year.
I can carry an "automatic" knife, impact weapon, stun gun, chemical spray, most any firearm that isn't federally prohibited, or any combination of the above.
In practice, as an old man leading a quiet life I carry a J-frame .38 Special, a Spyderco Endura 4 (cutting implement, not a weapon unless everything has gone irretrievably to hell), and a Victorinox Super Tinker for the tools. But I sure like the options I have.
And to add to what Dave said, Kentucky is shall issue, castle doctrine and stand your ground.
Nice place to be a gun owner.

Oregon is an open carry state for anyone over eighteen who can legally own a gun. The state allows counties and cities to designate no gun areas like parks. If you have a Concealed Handgun License, the law overrides the local jurisdictions so you can open or conceal carry in posted no gun areas.

In PA. you are issued a license to carry firearms, this allows you to carry concealed. No license is needed for open carry except in vehicles and cities of the 1st class.
That's the story here in PA, and PA is a shall issue state.

In Massachusetts it is a "Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms". Which technically does not allow concealed carry unless it is annotated "Restrictions: None".

Maine calls them "Concealed Firearms Permits." Firearms are more PC than weapons. A few years ago a state NRA activist told me this was necessary to get CC through the legislature.

Depends on the state.
In Colorado, a permit to carry refers to a firearm, not a knife or brass knuckles or sexy ninja stuff.
If you have a permit / liscence, you ought to understand what you have.

TN is Handgun Carry Permit. Permit allows open and conceal carry. Have to have a permit to carry though. The state legislature is considering open carry with no permit for those who can legally possess. Passed in Senate but go hung up in the House near the end of the last session. Finance Committee wanted info on revenue consequences of not requiring permit for open carry.

Just looked at mine. In NC it is called a concealed handgun permit. There are no restrictions on what type of handgun that you can carry. Open carry is also legal, but I never do it unless I am going to or returning from hunting!

none required for open carry.

In general most call it a CCW when talking about carrying firearms. CCW may not be the actual name the state calls it just like Xerox Copy has become the name for anything copied or printed when that is actually a companies name.
I have been told hundreds of times it is not a permit but a license or It is not a license but a permit. Or it is a CHP etc etc. That is why I try to use Permit/License everywhere on Handgunlaw.us Saves me from answering emails.
In West Virginia where I live our Permit/License is actually that. On the Front is says, "Concealed Pistol/Revolver Permit." On the back of the PERMIT is says, "Concealed Pistol/Revolver License." So take your pick.
On each States Page at Handgunlaw.us there is an image of each states Permit/License. You can see what a state calls theirs.

At one time, when I lived in Texas, a carry permit was specific to type of handgun. If your license was obtained while qualifying with a revolver, that was only type permitted. If you qualified with a semi-auto you could carry either S.A. or revolver. Don't know if it's still that way.

My Colorado permit calls itself a "concealed handgun permit", issued by the county sheriff, recognized statewide (plus reciprocity with 30-plus other states), valid for 5 years. Colorado is a "shall issue" state, anyone not specifically prohibited by law and meeting the minimum training requirements must be issued the permit.
I would probably have some problems with concealed switchblades, blackjacks, or machineguns.

First, happily, that silly rule has been abandoned.
Second, you're not exactly correct. The two types of CHLs were SA and NSA and that stood for Semi-Automatic and Non-Semi-Automatic.
If you qualified for SA it meant you used a pistol for the proficiency test and you could carry any handgun concealed.
If you qualified for NSA it meant you used a revolver for the test and you could NOT carry a semi-auto pistol concealed but you could carry any non-semi-auto. The distinction being, obviously, that NSA included derringers and similar handguns. Most folks forget that distinction.

In CA it's a license to carry a concealed weapon, carried by a licensee.
The specific language for a concealed weapon under this license is "to carry a pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the
person". PENAL CODE SECTION 26150-26225 has all the relevant language for anyone interested ... http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/di...le=26150-26225

in ny, we are issued a pistol permit
but it is called a LTC.....license to carry
at least, i think that is what the terminology is....
there can be "administrative" restrictions, so not
all licenses give you the ability to carry concealed
there are sportsman, hunting, target and various premises
permits.....every county is different
and a ny state license doesnt give you the ability to carry
in the big apple....they have their own permit system....which
doesnt include the rest of the state
(not even sure if a nyc permit allows you to carry in the rest of the
state....you really have to be up on your law here or you can get
in a LOT of trouble)

Really? Does that mean you can walk around carrying a loaded pump or semi-auto shotgun with an 18.5-inch barrel under your coat?

Actually, barring some rule I don't know about, and using the concepts that I was taught about the rules in Florida, I would think that not only is the answer to your question yes but that a 16 inch barreled shotgun accompanied by an NFA tax stamp would be legal under one's coat, too. Unless the rules are specific in re which weapons are allowed and prohibited a deadly weapon in the KY context would seem to be anything you're legally allowed to possess.

TN is also a Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground state and the carry permit doesn't limit the number of firearms you can carry at one time.

In Michigan it's a CPL, concealed pistol license.
Covers tazers, or pistols.
