I don't want to draw any attention to myself. Of any kind. I'd rather keep it concealed so nobody, "good" or "bad", can tell I have it.

The young man who was robbed was 21... I know a lot of younger guys are drawn to the idea of OC because it looks cool, it's a chance to show off.

I also wonder/worry that the distinction between OC and brandishing can become a judgment call...

One thing I have learned over my many years is that it is best not to draw attention to oneself...Particularly when armed...So, I dress and behave in a fashion that does not attract attention. I prefer to blend in and no matter what one's rights are, openly carrying a firearm in most places attracts attention. It's legal to walk through the jungle with a string of porkchops around one's neck but it's not very smart. The majority of OC types I see around my city/suburban area are young guys. The novelty of carrying a firearm wears off over time. At this stage in life, it's about as exciting as putting on my shoes.

Yep - OC just makes no sense and only draws attention to yourself... "Because you can" is more of an attitude than a necessity.

I have run into a few open carrying around here. One thing I have noticed they all have in common is, the way they all dress screams LOOK AT ME!
I have never seen the point in it other than to get attention.

Here we go again. I'd like to know how many of us who think OC is a bad idea would prefer to see it made illegal. Personally I CC...my choice in an OC state.

Carrying, whether open or concealed, comes with it's own risks. I suppose it's futile to suggest to that young man that he may want to be a little more aware of his surroundings. There are two types of people in this world, those who don't need to be told and those who can't be told.

Open carry robs you of the element of surprise, which is the biggest asset of Concealed carry. It also makes everyone around you paranoid. It adds fuel to the anti-gunner's arguments. In short......open carry is just stupidity manifesting itself.

The state I live in is an Open Carry state and a Shall Issue state.

The predominant use of civilian OC that I've seen is sales people in gun shops. I see some OC in the more rural areas of the state, and of course, hunters OC.

Some counties have tried to make OC illegal, but I think they have been overriden by the state's higher courts.

This state also has that sort of catch-all law or ordinance known as "going armed to the terror of the public". It's also referred to as "affray" in this state. I think both are open to wide interpretation, unless some dweeb is running around waving a gun in the air and yelling weird things.

I would not like to see OC made illegal in this state. Nor do I consider OC to be "stupidity manifesting itself" as someone suggests. OC is still a citizen's right in this state, and I'm pretty much against any more rights being stripped away.

And no, I don't OC. I have in the past, years and years ago. Not because I was showing off and not just "because I could". It was simply a matter of it being practical at the time, that's all, and it wasn't in any big city. Plus it was way before concealed carry became available in this state. I don't do it now. It is no longer practical for me, and I don't want to upset the paranoiacs.

I think ole' Red Foreman from that 70's show said it best when it comes to OC when you could carry concealed, " Dumb+++ ".

Default OC?

The link says the young man was "openly" carrying.
We use the term "open carry' to mean an outside the waistband holster.
I believe this person was walking on the street with his new gun in his hand.
Of course I could be wrong.

The “element of surprise” is normally with the attacker not the defender. You are reacting to the actions of the person attacking you by definition there’s no element of surprise.

Objection, assumes facts not in evidence.

This is one of the 2 boards I participate in and one of the things I really like about it is the civility. Could we maybe not call other members who make choices we disagree with “stupid” ?

Default O.C. Thoughts

First and foremost I got a good laugh out of this story. This just confirms my thoughts on the O.C. mentality of LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME. Well in this case someone did and the outcome could have been more tragic due to the age involved and I would have to guess the knowledge of the new weapon acquired on the same day it was stolen. Perhaps the worst aspect of this story is where the firearm will end up and with whom.

I agree with that. And open carry would be far more "exciting". Walking around with a "Look at me! look what I have!" announcement on my hip does not appeal to me as a rule and just leads to an assortment of issues everywhere you go.

To get legal about it, I don't mind if Texas passes open carry, that's just a law permitting what many believe is a right, anyway. But doing it and being allowed to do it, by right or by law, is a whole different situation. My friends know I carry a gun. They choose to ignore it whether they favor it or not and I act the same way with respect to my gun carrying friends. The rest of the world doesn't know and has no need to know.

Willie Nelson said it best, and he was referring to the Old West in his fictional song, but the concept is still pretty much the same:

Pancho And Lefty Lyrics - Townes Van Zandt. Album: Legend

Quote:
Pancho was a bandit boys
His horse was fast as polished steel
Wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Bandit or not, the world "feels" your gun when it's openly carried - it's not necessary. YMMV. I know there are advocates but it's just emotional to HAVE to do it. I WANT to be able to do it but I won't actually do it. It's simply unwise. I like favorable gun laws - it doesn't mean I have to act on the "permissions" to the discomfort of others.

That's what it says, that he bought the gun earlier in the day and that he was walking along carrying it and it appears it was in his hand. He and his friend must have been discussing it. It's not the same scenario as "open carry" in the ordinary sense of the term. It's actually kind of weird.

i do open carry when at work in the LGS. it is required by the owner, plus not a bad idea... guns and money. outside the shop, its concealed for sure. no tactical cool stuff for me. we call the 5.11 camera vests the "shoot me first" gear. i want to look as little tactical as i can. the element of surprise shall be mine...

I OC when I'm at the farm, or out on the Polaris. I use a different holster (and pistol) when I open carry. My CC holster is an open top, no retention Lobo holster. The one I OC has a retention strap or flap.

I'm waiting to see someone open carrying a nice pre-war Colt Single Action in .44-40 with ivory grips. Preferably with a 4 3/4 inch barrel. Because I have a 2X4, and when he wakes up in the hospital, I'll have another gun added to my collection.

I am a big proponent of concealed carry. Open carry has a time and place, and you have to use good judgment on when to do it.

Here you can open carry all you want. Funny thing is I can't carry concealed in a bar, but could open carry. I only open carry during hunting season when I am going out hunting. Mostly because hunting I use an open carry holster and a N frame. Around here during hunting season seeing someone with a gun is like seeing robins in the spring. Normal.

Oregon is an open carry state but allows cities and counties to restrict carry. In Multnomah County, it is illegal to open carry a loaded gun. The law allowing concealed carry preempts cities and counties from restricting carry, so if he had an Oregon concealed handgun license, he could have open carried or conceal carried it loaded. Since he had just bought it that morning, I am guessing it was empty to comply with the county law.

The last thing we need to be doing is siding with the anti-gunners on anything.

The divide and conquer strategy began when the Brady people decided that the general population didn't know the difference and could be convinced that assault rifles were evil. They also counted on the hunters and target shooters to throw those of us that like to own and shoot black guns under the bus. Like the old rhyme, "For the want of a nail".

By the way, I also choose to carry concealed in an OC state. I like the OC law because I don't have to worry about getting arrested if my coat rides up in Wal-Mart, or I accidently forget the coat when I run into the local "Stop-n-Rob".

Maybe if we ever get past all the "I do it this way and you should too", and leave it up to the "Individual" to determine his own means of self protection.

In every previous thread, on the same topic, again and again.. BTW, I agree. Can we put it to bed now?

A lot of people put a lot of effort into getting open carry laws enacted in various states. Why not reward their accomplishment by open carrying?

p.s. The link article is poorly written. It sounds as though the victim was carrying a unloaded handgun in his hands rather than loaded and holstered on his hip.

Probably about as many as it'd take to make the "Bear Gun" things go away.

This is why I don't OC.

Or wear fancy jewelry. Or leave huge big screen TV boxes next to my trash can. I hate advertising.

Cripes, if he just bought it and was walking down the street carrying it in his hand odds are it wasn't even loaded. Not only that, it was a .22 now just who is going to buy a 22 to OC on his belt for a defense gun? I think some of us are rising to bait?

We have covered this topic on many occasions. As usual, these threads seem to generate more heat than light. Time for a rest.
