Default Carrying the same types of CCW's?

Hi Everyone,
I Carry my M&P 40 full size in a IWB whenever possible and carry my S&W 642 in pocket holster (sometimes IWB) whenever the situations makes carrying the full size M&P difficult.
My question is how important do you feel that carrying the same type/platform is?
I've been looking into getting a M&P Shield to compliment the full-size and carry whenever I am not carrying that, instead of carrying the snub revolver..I have been communicating and reading positive posts on the shield and as much as I like the 642, keep thinking that I would most likely be more efficient by having the same types of carry guns..Thoughts? Thanks!

I'd go with a new Shield 40; same principle of ops as your 40 FS.

The 642 as a bug works for me.
I carry a pair of J frames quite often.
Sometimes and 19h the wit11 platform or but not too often now.
Be comfortable in your choices and how good you are with them.
Know your limits and liabilities plus capabilities with each.

I like a wheel gun for reliability and it would be a better choice to pass to a friend than a semi auto which he/she may be less familiar with.

My wife packs a 642, this in addition to my 640,642 or 36 works most times. If on some extended trip farther from home and or on the Harley I take my 3 inch 686 plus with .357 and a J and reloads in 158 Gr LSWCHP FBI Loads.
We all make choices , good luck.

Fine motor skills are gone in a life threatening emergency, I know from first hand experience. I've been retired since '97 and no longer carry a duty size auto. My EDC is a J frame and if I were to carry more than one gun (doubtful) it would be another S&W revolver b/c the operating platform is exactly the same.

It sure doesn't hurt to have very similar carry guns as long as you practice with both types frequently I don't see a problem.

I carry two different types of handguns (a snub nose .38 and a DA/SA .45.) but practice a lot and over two defensive classes and three IDPA matches have not had a problem yet, granted there're not the real deal.

BTW: I don't think there's enough of a difference between the shield and M&P FS to make you mess up, now if you carried a 1911 one day and a SIG P226 the next you might have a problem.

Yes and that's the thing why I am debating this choice..I love both my current choices and try to train with both as much As possible..I do like the reliability factor of the revolver, but I am very confident with the reliability of the M&P as well.
Given the choice, I'd carry my M&P all the time, as accuracy is better ( though I do well with the 642) and rounds are doubled, not to mention I am more proficient reloading..So for me first choice. However, many times the situations with seasons/ activities dictates that the full size isn't the best choice, so than the snub revolver fills the CCW.
As you pointed out, I am all for simplicity too..providing I am as equipped as I can be at the given time. Part of me keeps thinking that no matter how much I train with both types of guns, there could be confusion during this fine motor skill time, so I would be more efficient by using one type of platform. Decisions

That's the thing;
I am thinking I may be better off by getting a Shield, so that I'd be carrying my M&P full size whenever possible, and carry the M&P Shield other times when I need more conceal ability.. As they are very similar..
Whereas now I carry the M&P ( semi auto) and a S&W 642
( revolver) otherwise.. So totally different. Thanks!

I don't see the issue. With either gun you simply point and pull.

Don't over think things. If your current setup works then leave it alone. There are too many pro's and con's to worry about it either way.

I AGREE WITH OLD COP. I CARRIED A FULL SIZE 1911 AND 2 SPARE MAGS FOR MANY YEARS. NOW, IN MY OLD AGE, I CARRY A SNUBBIE 686+, WITH A 642 AS A BACK UP, FOR A NY RELOAD. OR THE 642 BY ITSELF AS EDC. TWO SPEED STRIPS FOR A TOTAL OF 12 ROUNDS, GIVES ME A COMPLETE RELOAD FOR BOTH GUNS. THE AMMO IS THE SAME FOR BOTH GUNS---SPEER, GOLD DOT, .38 SPL+P, 135GR, JSWCHP, FOR SHORT BARRELS. THIS MAKES LIFE A LOT SIMPLER……….

UPDATED I've Decided To Stop Rotating My Carry Guns.

And in particular this post

I’ve been jumped a couple of times in the course of my job. Both times it happened faster than I had time to prepare for. Both times there was a moment of panic while my body was adjusting to my endocrine system dumping adrenalin into my blood stream while my heart rate was going from 60 to 160+ beats a minute and all my fine motor skills were going away.

I know exactly what that moment feels like and I can tell you from experience the fewer things that I have to consider (which gun am I carrying and where is it) during that moment the better off I am.

Someone already said it but in that situation variables are bad. By definition if I’m in a self defense situation I’m already behind the curve. Every step I have to take to prepare to and defend myself is an opportunity for Murphy to rear his ugly head. Every step or decision that I can eliminate increases the odds in my favor.

When I decided to limit myself to two (essentially) identical guns I actually made two changes at once.

I had originally decided that I was going to limit my carry choices to third generation Smith and Wessons. Then one morning I went through some shoot and move training with a S&W 6906 that I had been carrying for years and I made a mistake that would have got me killed in a real gun fight.

I engaged the first target and then (as I had been trained) decocked the weapon while moving from one set of targets to the next. The problem was I forgot to flip the safety back off in the heat of the moment and found my self trying to fire at the next set of targets and not knowing why my gun wouldn’t shoot. It wasn’t till the second time I did a tap rack and roll that I figured it out.

As another person in this thread has said, I decided then and there that I was never going to carry a gun that had any other controls than a trigger and a magazine release for self defense ever again. I don’t care if the mistake was nothing more than a stupid brain fart and I don’t care if it only happed once. It only has to happen once in a fight to get me killed.

The result of those two decisions was that I only carry one of two guns and I only carry them in one place and only in one way. And the guns that I carry don’t have any extraneous controls on them.

I’m not saying anyone else has to do it that way, I’m just telling you what works for me.

Default A HAMMERLESS J FRAME

Would be kind of hard to mess up. Not much in the "manual of ops" involved, unless you count reloading. I want to just use a ccw, NOT, think about how to, or if I disengaged some "safety" feature or not, that could get me killed if I forgot it, or took too long to remember it's use. In times of high stress or pretty much all the time for me, I like to KISS.

Good thoughts everyone, Thanks! Both of my carry options have no "extra safeties" and i would not want any for "my" CCW. I noticed the M&P Shield was now offered without an external safety, which was one of the reasons I started looking into them...
However, I am pretty happy with my current set-up..but always thinking "usually over- thinking" of ways to improve

Didn't put it in my other post but I only carry an M&P 9 or an M&P Shield

As long as one is well practiced with what one carries I see no problem.
