Actually an AOW does NOT require a Form .20 to cross statelines . SBR, SBS -yes , AOW, Supressor - no. Still need to carefully check the laws as to posseson or actual carry.

Even though I don't need one , I guess I am of the age to be believable to carry one. I would be inclined for "no hook" as I have enough training and experience with sticks to carry over without learning new from scratch.

I my jurisdiction I could openly carry an actual sword , but a sword cane an inherent no-no . Now this threrad has my mind churning about doing a Form 1 for a cane gun.

When I was in Washington D.C. an umbrella dragged behind me while sight seeing eventually ended up with a chisel edge on the steel tip
( maybe a touch on a grinder helped a little in the process)
But it was legal to carry anywhere,,, just make sure you get a steel tipped one if you want a good sticker!

Canes are GREAT tools for fighting. There's a dvd on TRS/Fight-Fast I've been wanting to buy for my Dad & I.
I keep a baton in my car..it's a cheap one but will work. Soon I'll get a S&W.
On a side note...I just noticed the hand-cuffs that were given to me are S&W! I had no clue until I looked at them a little closer yesterday.

As I understand it batons are illegal in California. That might be the case in other jurisdictions. I think it would be wise to check this out before purchasing one.

I just bought a cane from one of the big box faRm and outdoor Kind of
store. Sold in the pet and animal supplies dept. It is about 36" long
and 1 1/8" dia hickory. Surely a stout piece of wood for $12.99. I'm
going to cut it to length and probably trim the pronounced hook on the
end and probably freshen up the plain varnished finish and then add
a rubber tip. I really need a cane right now because of my back
problems. But with all due respect I have to say that I have a hard
time believing that anyone who actually needs a cane could use one
very effectively for self defense. Seriously does anyone think that
they could survive an attack from a couple or even one gang banger
armed with a knife with only a cane for SD?

Yes its not the cane that's going to win the fight, its the person welding it. It its stout enough cane that does not break easy you have superior reach over your opponent, you use that to your advantage.

I walk with a cane, it is made of black locust wood ( hardness near oak or hickory ). As I recall all of my baton training well, it will make a good defensive weapon. I carry better weapons, but as a last resort this cane would serve me well.

Next to my alto flute is an aluminum tube with an embouchure hole. It is about 42"+ in length and will get some tone holes drilled as well. Then a piece of rubber and a handle.
It will be used as a cane when in areas where firearms are infringed upon.
I have a longer one as well.
High polish is last.
Right now it sounds a low G as does the alto flute.
Kendo style is a good workout.

I read somewhere...it may have been in a thread somewhere on this forum...about a cane maker someplace like Texas or Missouri or Arkansas...one of those states. There were some really nice ones and I'd thought I bookmarked the site, but now I can't find it.

The canes could be custom made with fancy engraved heads and different kinds of ferrules and from several varieties of wood. You could get a wrist thong on the cane as well. Prices were extremely reasonable. You could even order "seconds" or canes with factory blemishes at discounted prices.

Anyone know who I'm talking about? No, it isn't Brazos, already checked them.

Funny thing is I was going to mention that I've seen similar brass heads on horse harnesses. I just googled horse hame, and sure enough it is from a horse harness. Learn something new everyday.

I have friends in the martial arts that are Dangerous with anything in their hands.

One guy's Mom is good with a staff(among other things) he got on her wrong side one day, she grabbed a wood handled broom, he went out thru the screen door with out opening it. She's 5' tall, 100 pounds it that much.

I have read this article with much interest. Since my accident almost 8.5 years ago, I have not only benefitted from the stability my cane has provided, I have felt the need for some form of defensive device since I feel like I have a neon sign overhead identifying me as an easy victim.

In many instances, I can walk ok without the cane, but I feel more comfortable with it, especially since I live in a state that denies me the right to defend myself.

My issue is, I don't want a threat getting too close. I also lack the skills and confidence to engage in cane fighting. Since this thread has a fair degree of participation, can any one here suggest where someone can get training to confidently use a cane for defense, or a credible source of videos on the subject?

I have been taking online classes for self defense cane and Jeet Kune Do. I can honestly say the cane makes a wonderful self defense weapon, especially when you know how to use it!

I use a Kabar defensive cane. I'm an old coot (82) and can't defend myself with my fists anymore.
The aluminum cane gives me a little edge if push comes to shove.

Find a dojo that has a master in Escrima (or Arnis) and take some lessons to make a fighting stick really "sing."

YUP but its still better than a harsh word and a stern look. Anything can be turn against the owner, the other guy just has to be better or maybe just luckier.
As a side note: from numerous observations, bunt force trauma (A lock/rock/soda can) is a sock beats a penetrating/slash wound (shiv/shank) every day of the week and twice on Sunday

Sam Peckinpah’s “Killer Elite” has some good cane fighting scenes in it.

I am disabled and must use a cane to walk. I have a number of aluminum canes I use on the farm and around the house. The one I bought to use when I leave my home is a hard wood from asia and has a curved handle. I researched the wood by contacting the company that sells them to the farm store chain, and found that they are made of an asian wood that is a relative of our locust tree. It is as strong as our oak or hickory trees. My initial blow would likely break the collarbone. I carry a .45 pistol and fast open knife, but the cane would be the first line of defense, even before my Pepper Blaster. Farm stores keep these canes in stock because ranchers and farmers use them to move herds of animals. They are a real bargain at about $ 15.

For way WAY less (~$40 or so), I get handcrafted solid hickory livestock canes made by the Amish from Lehmans in Ohio.

If you have the slightest woodworking skills and a rat tail file, you can put your own finger grooves (for grip), wherever and how deep your preference is. Lehmans offers both a 36" length or, a 62" length, if you really want to reach out and touch someone.

IIRC, Canemasters pretty much start at over $100. It's been a couple of years since I last visited the site.

Just google Lehmans Hardware, they specialize in turn of the century hand powered stuff.

Among the family heirlooms dating back to the early 19th century were a couple items mentioned in this thread. One is a sward cane that my brother has now. I ended up with a shillelagh, light but as strong as steel with a large knob at the top. Can only imagine the damage it would do if someone got hit with it. Still in excellent shape other than missing the brass cap that went on the narrow end. The shillelagh might be close to 200 years old. Still good on my feet but a handy item to have around.

In 2015, when I first replied, sword canes and other bladed weapons were still illegal in Texas. They are not illegal any longer and have not been for two years as I recollect. Any knife is now legal to carry, machetes, Bowie knives, sword canes, etc. So that does permit me to carry my sword cane if I so choose.

I generally do not so choose. Too much hassle, because I have to push a very tight button to release the blade. There are better sword canes out there but since mine is 50 or more years old I'm fond of it and the time I spent with it in tough neighborhoods way back when. Never needed it but that's fine, too.

But, to use the term from the video, a "3 foot stick" makes an incredible weapon. And you can carry a cane anywhere and everywhere in the world and on any kind of transportation.

A word of caution - don't be an idiot. If you are somewhere between 18 and 40, standing straight and tall, with a thick head of dark hair, etc., and a young person's strong stride, don't think you won't draw attention if you carry a cane. You will. Not everyone is the world has his or her head up their duffel bag. Especially trained professionals. If you wouldn't wear a long overcoat in 90 degree August weather because you'll look like a criminal then you're smart enough to know that you look dangerous if you're in no way weak looking and you're sporting a cane.

Anyone can fake a limp - if you have to, then do that. Otherwise, don't look foolish.

The training master in the video talked about people not wanting to look old or infirm - but if you look deadly with your stick you will draw attention, even if you can get away with it when boarding a plane. At least act like you need the cane.

That said, if you're any kind of older looking you can always carry a cane of some kind. Just carry one that really looks like a medical device and not a weapon, and a woods walking stick might be out of place in downtown Big City Anywhere. Choose the right stick.

Another item to note - the canes in the video all had rubber tips on the end. THAT is the key to making a cane look like a medical device.

I have carried canes onto planes for many years. TSA never stops me although they often x-ray my sticks and, believe it or not, they sometimes have one of theirs to lend to me to walk through the metal detectors and then I give it back when I retrieve my stick from the conveyor belt.

Anywhere you go that 3 foot stick could be the difference between winning or losing a confrontation.

I started using trekking poles for hiking and backpacking starting in the mid 90s, since so much of my job required backcountry patrols in steep terrain. They help with balance on rough surfaces and creek crossings, plus help take some of the stress off knees and hips. The serrated ski pole tips would create a painful distraction if used to fend off aggression and create distance.

About three years ago, I started having lower back issues that led to lumbar surgery in 2019, when I developed foot drop in my right foot. I was tripping on flat ground with that foot, and bought an adjustable, lightweight Leki cane that I used before the surgery, and for months during followup rehab. Like the trekking poles, it also has a sharp serrated ski pole tip for outdoor activities, and it comes with a rubberized tip cover for urban use. I noticed that folks generally tended to give me a wider berth when I carry the cane.

I still use the cane when sciatica flares up, and I wouldn't hesitate it to use it to create distance on anyone or anything that approached me aggresively. If someone were to wrestle with me over it, I'd let them take it, creating distance with my cc ready to bring into the situation, if necessary. Anyway, that's my plan. Always a good idea to have a final recourse that will end a serious threat.

Love those Cane Master Canes! I'm 70 years and walk with a cane so why not have something strong enough to use for more than walkin with?
