Okay, I cheated again. But had to show off the best group I've shot with the Volquartsen Scorpion. 3/4" group for the 20 shots. Not sure why I tend to go a bit left with this gun at close range.

I did this a couple weeks ago,not "target" grade accuracy but combat worthy, plus it wasn't close in and I wasn't slow shooting just popping off rounds in a fairly quick manner:

The results.

I got all 34 on target and was doing quick shots I can do better but either slow way down or use a rest.

When you shoot groups like that, I'll allow small indiscretions.

shakyshoot: Every time I go to the range and start shaking after a few rounds I think of your forum name, except I think "shakyshot."

If I could shoot like you can I would change my handle.

Thanks--It's an ironic nickname, like calling a 300 pounder "Tiny."
At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I haven't been on here in a little while, and I'm surprised - but pleased - this thread is still going.

My most recent effort. Not my best, but the best I could do that day.

Just curious. I shoot from the same stance. Some people believe that Isosceles gets better results.

Yeah, lots of debate about once stance vs another. I'll bet it doesn't make a difference. Especially for a challenge such as this.

What will make a difference is being comfortable.

There are good arguments for both Isosceles and Weaver (or modified Weaver). However, I submit that even if one could be proven better than the other for ultimate accuracy, an individual will still shooter better using the one with which he is most comfortable.

I've said many times, it's the result, not the method, that makes for a good shot. If you stand on your head and hit the center, isn't that a good stance for that shooter?

Agreed! I've seen people shoot well from both and have tried both myself. For me, the weaver gets the best result.

Thumbs up Waever vs. Isosceles

I call your attention to the May edition of the Dillon Precision Blue Press magazine. It contains a very thorough article about the two stances and debunks many myths about Weaver.

A good read.

I read that article Bob. It is a good one. I think one of the most important aspects of it is how Jack Weaver "developed" his stance, "It just felt like the right thing to do." I think this is the most important aspect of any stance; it must be comfortable.

There is a caveat to that, comfort must not outweigh performance. If the stance you're using isn't allowing you to hit the target accurately and quickly, change something. It might be a little uncomfortable at first, but if it allows you to improve your shooting, it will become comfortable as time goes by.

Shot as cold as can be.
Brand new G19, a few dry presses at home then off to the range.

With a target like that on day one, I'm sure you'll be in the middle in no time. Great shooting!

I hadn't tried this for several months, and decided to get back to it with my new M&P 9c. I had a really solid attempt going until a mag change part way through the 7 yard string messed me up. The next two shots after the change were barely on paper. I don't know what happened. I pulled it back together, and didn't do too poorly at 10 yards, but still not good enough. Soon though.

I notice that most people drop one out at 7 yards. I think it has to do with the way the challenge is shot. I'll bet that most would do better if they started at 10 yards and then moved forward.

This started as a "Challenge Target"...then morphed to something else. 39 torso shots, followed by 11 shots to the head, at 18-21feet.

I've had many targets "morph" into expanded training. Good for you.

After an extended period absent from the range, looks like I'll be there again Saturday and will try it.... the 7 yard mark is a problem area for me.

I love it when I get to the 7 yd shots, because at my range the target is very poorly lit at 3 yd and 5 yd. If I make it clean to the 7 yd shots, I move into the bright light. If I miss it's usually on the 10 yd.

Trying out my new CCW.

OK, not really. Shooting a friend's pistol. That is warmed up instead of cold and it also has an RMR.

Nice target.

Just in case anyone was wondering, nothing wrong with using an RMR. You can carry a gun with an RMR and I have. I'm not a big fan of them on pistols, but hey, everyone has what works for them.

Default Not one of the challenges, but...

The other day one of my buddies mentioned the FBI Q course, so I went to the range the other morning and since I was alone, the RSO ran the timer for me. G19 shooting from concealment.

So...was that good or bad? I see a bunch of holes, but what's the course of fire, and what's the scoring?

By the FBI rules, blackhorse2010's target was very good. He got 100%. He should have posted this in Rastoff's Challenge II though because that's the one with time limits.

However, just like the Challenge II, the FBI Q test is super easy. It's 60 rounds. All shot strings are started from concealment. You can read the course of fire here: Shoot Like the Pros: The New FBI Qualification Course of Fire - The Truth About Guns

Thanks Rastoff--The shooting sounds pretty easy, all that drawing not so much. I've never shot any place that lets you draw, so I haven't done much of it. I've practiced some at home with a cleared gun, but really not a lot.
Nice job blackhorse2010.

Well, let's face it, if you carry a gun for protection, you need to learn to present it from concealment. Otherwise, how will you defend yourself?

From your original post back in March 2015 - "I know you can't beat me, but can you even come close? PROVE IT!!! (There might be a prize involved).

Right, can't beat you but I am happy considering I used a Shield 9, not a 1911, 73 years old, have serious cataracts and wear glasses that are stronger than some telescopes.

This was the very first 20 shots ever with my brand new Walther PPQ .45. Almost made it. There's 2 shots in the "flyer' group. One of the 7 yarders was so close I'm still not sure if it's touching, but one of the 10 yarders definitely broke the line. What a sweet trigger on this gun. I'm sure it won't take long to pass the challenge with this one.

I don't know how I missed this before...

You may not have "beat" me, but that's some really good shooting! You can shoot with me anytime.

Finally got out to shoot yesterday, after being cooped up for a while (work, surgery, work).

First 20 rounds with a Shield 9mm and with a Model 10 that I just picked up.

Dragged a rattly old Series 70 Gov't Model out of semi-retirement, and warmed up my 629 Mtn Gun, after its trip to the factory to be sighted in (kidding; it just had some lock-work done).

In response to the current thread "proud of 10 yard groups" I'll say that I'm not proud of these, but might as well own up to my shortcomings. They were also fun to shoot.

There might have been one bad round in the .38 box, and a dog bit me while I was shooting the .44. <smile> The shot that's "out" on the .44 target was the final one; I think my endurance ran out.

Thumbs up

MarkL01,

I like that Smith &Wesson rear sight on your 1911. I have a Custom Colt Lightweight Commander with a S&W K-frame rear sight milled into the slide. Helps the accuracy to have a good sight.

Thanks. That was a sporty setup at the time. I've had that gun for over 35 years. I really thought I'd be able to shoot it better than I did yesterday. Maybe practice really does make a difference.

The first .45 I ever shot was a Commander, and I really liked it. Never got around to getting one, though.

Mark,
Some very good shooting there. I'm not surprised that the best group is with the 1911. This is harder than it looks and you did really well.

I need more practice!

Created my own target with a measured 3" X 2" box and printed it out on 8.5" X 11" paper.

The GLOCK 43 carries like a dream but barks a bit.

The GLOCK 21 nightstand gun is a dream to shoot.

Just for giggles I tried my .22 pistol as well. Oops.

Will try again with my first classic S&W revolver I have coming: a Model 19-3...

Here are 2 more failed attempts at the Rastoff Challenge. I haven't done this in a few months. They were shot on 2 separate days to stay within the rules.

They represent rds. #700 and #720. Gonna get it someday.

Sure is fun trying, though.

The 4 in the black on the revolver target were all 10 yd. shots.

Maybe I should try the 22/45. Nah, that would be too easy! (Snort)

Yes, try the 22/45. It's a great gun to practice with and gain confidence.

Thanks. It does seem harder than I expected. I have to respect the competition folks who can keep their concentration up for long courses of fire.

Second day out with the brand new Springfield Range Officer .45 and i THINK I passed the challenge. That one 10 yd hole on the left is torn up, but I believe the actual hole is in. Nice 1 1/4" group at any rate.

I shot this target with it on the first trip, just 2 days ago. A 50 ft NRA slow fire target, actually shot at 51 ft. Looks like at 1 1/2" group on that one.

That looks like a winner to me shakeyshoot! See, if you use the right gun it can be done.

I'll try to remember to measure both those groups a little later.

My other 1911 target had that one "marginal" shot, but there's no doubt about this one. And I shot it with Federal HST's, which functioned perfectly in the Range Officer.

Nicely done again.

Of course I have to ask, is that a gun you'll carry?
