Square Butt J Frame
I'm about to acquire my first square butt J Frame. What are the pros and cons of the square butt as a concealed carry piece? What recommendations do those of you who utilize the square butt have with regard to grips. Any comments about your experience with the square butt J's will be appreciated.
Purely subjective, but the square butt feels pretty good in my hand. Certainly different than the round butt.

I do not find the different to be too big a deal on a J-frame.

I have a snubby round butt 36 and a 3" square butt 36. The square butt doesn't affect the concealability that much. For me it has a more significant effect on how well it fits in my hand. The stock round butt grips are too small, but the square butt grips are MUCH better.

On a square butt , the stock grips are actually somewhat usable.

For medium to large handed man, RB grips are too small. The Tyler T-Grip or similar devise pretty much cures this and uses the stock wooden grips. Ivan

My experience has been that SB J frames conceal almost as easily as their RB brethren. Just to give you some context, I carry IWB at the 4-o'clock position. They also fit the hand much better and offer more to hold on to, as other posters have noted.
The only caveat of square butt Js is the dearth of grips available for them. They're not impossible to find, you just won't have as many options or find them as easily. If you aren't in a hurry and money is no object, I highly recommend Herretts Detective stocks. They're made just for your hand and perfectly proportioned for J frame dimensions if you specify that they're not to extend more than a quarter inch below the frame.

Wish I could find a SB J frame, they fit me like a glove w/a grip adapter. Anyone that has a Model 37, or a lead on one, I'd appreciate a PM.

Don't know if it matters anymore, but Sile made a wood grip to fit on the RB-J to pretty much duplicate a SB grip. It's a service-style grip that can be paired with a T-grip adapter. It's not a larger, target-style grip.

Kieth44spl,
Those grips are very nice. Where did you acquire them?
Thanks,
Joel

If you're interested in getting a Crimson Trace grip laser, I think they only make them for round butt J-frames.
