You should not carry a gun.
I'm learning that there are so many times and places I should not carry a gun I'm going to have to start making a list.
Carrying a gun in the home or having access to a gun in certain rooms like a bathroom indicates paranoia or otherwise suffering a mental disorder.
Never carry a gun if you might have to stop somewhere that requires the gun being left in the vehicle. Leave the gun at home.
Don't carry a gun to social gatherings. Someone at the party might be offeded by guns. Leave gun in vehicle before going in. Ooooops don't do that either.
To bear arms is a God given right, but carrying a gun in a church is profane.
Do not open carry. Only idiots open carry.

Great post. They can't be offended by what they don't know is there. They can't steal what they can't find. Unless a business is doing pat-downs or has a metal detector at the door, if I absolutely can't avoid said business for some reason (like visiting someone in a hospital), they can just assume I'm not carrying against their wishes. If a life-death situation arises while I'm at that business, a misdemeanor civil infraction for carrying where prohibited will be the least of my concerns. It's always better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.
As for church, I'll leave it up to God to judge whether I'm profane for worshipping while armed. :-)
After having concealed carry permits for 20 years, I feel I am pretty adept at avoiding my weapon 'printing' or being noticed. I've had plenty of friendly conversations in public with law enforcement personnel while legally carrying and I've never got 'that look' from any of them. Sometimes I have to carry less gun than I prefer, but any gun (that you are proficient with) is better than no gun at all.
And what I carry rig I use while in the shower is nobody's business. Just because I think they're out to get me doesn't mean they're not. :-)

You've convinced me.
I'm selling off all of my guns, and from now on I'm just gonna carry a cop.

I carry wherever it's not prohibited by law (although I don't agree with that, either). It's absolutely ridiculous that most legislation assumes the criminal element cares what the law is. That type of feel good legislation has passed only to appease the liberal progressive communist regime.
Like any tool, it's useless if it's not with you when needed. My own siblings think there's something wrong with folks that carry. Nothing wrong with exercising your rights. Use them or lose them.
I have never "needed" a gun, and have been perfectly capable of defending myself without one, but if worse comes to worse it's worth being prepared. Guns stuck in the safe don't do much good.
I ignore the lame signs and policies claiming company policies have precident over my livelihood. It's none of their business.

One shouldn't really need a list, just common sense.

I DO carry in social situations, if/when in a church or in several other places mentioned here b/c I can't accurately predict when I might need my gun. Nobody knows I'm carrying and I intend to keep it that way. It's nobody's business but mine.

LOL... This got me thinking of the old Jeff Foxworthy "You might be a Redneck" list.
- If you think Common Sense should cover where and when you can/should carry a gun... you should not carry the gun.
- If you think that people in a restaurant will panic by the sight of your firearm on your side... you should not carry the gun.
BTW: The 'Whataburger' Hamburger chain corporate office made a statement the other day, saying that when TX goes Licensed Open Carry in Jan, they will NOT allow OC in their Franchises.
Sorry for the Hijack... Back to the list!!

One of the mottoes of 4chan was "only a fool would take anything said here seriously", and no matter what you think of such a site or the other seedier places on the net, I believe the words are worth repeating and are relevant to some extent everywhere, and in every forum. Yes, there is a lot of good information here, some people who really do add useful information or insight into the topics discussed, and there is definitely something to learn in this fine forum. That being said, one must also ignore a lot of the insane or inflammatory comments made by the peanut gallery, or introduced by sly trolls.
Some threads and topics may be about more scientific, objective topics, in which certain facts may be presented and taken into consideration. However, there are an endless amount of "Do you x?" "Do you think y is a good idea?" or the very so classic, slam your skull into the wall stupid "x is better than y"threads that are a cancer upon every web forum since the days of Usenet. They are purely "fun" threads and topics, intended to start flame wars, rile up subjective opinions, and create general mayhem. There might be a few brave and wise men who venture into such threads to offer a few bits of intelligent, objective advice into such topics, but you will soon realize that bulk of it is flame posts by very agitated people who hold very strong opinions about such a topic, or flaming trolls who enjoy the whole hot mess.
In short, in an open forum, you will see the free ideas of many diverse people. This will cause conflict, which inevitably leads to flaming and name calling. This will cause the less than reasonable people to escalate things to rather uncivil levels, and leave the more reasonable people leave felling insulted or alienated.
If you carry a .22lr you are crazy for carrying a toy. Carry a .44 magnum, you are an out of control vigilante, looking for a fight, with no regard for those who stand behind your victim. You like to carry a reload for your carry pistol? That's fine... if you're Rambo. Keep a gun in your bathroom? What are you, a wanna be James Bond? If you don't put onions into your chili mix, you are not only wrong about making chili, you are obviously insane with a break with reality for disagreeing with me.
1. Ignore inflammatory threads
2. Ignore inflammatory posts
3. Realize this is an internet forum where anyone, regardless if they own a firearm or not, carry one, leave one in the house for self defense, if they are a mall ninja, a gun controller, or wayward troll, can post whatever they want, not all opinions here are intelligent or relevant, and all posts should be taken with heaping spoonfuls of salt.
If you ever find yourself wound up, step away from the keyboard, and go do something productive somewhere else. Don't respond to trolls of flamers, don't make controversial threads popular.

...but, but if we don't carry our guns anymore think of all the subject we WON'T be able to discuss anymore: Open carry vs concealed, chambered vs unchambered, reciprocity laws, adequate capacity! NO!!! It's too much to give up! I WILL CONTINUE TO CARRY...EVEN IN CHURCH!

I carry everywhere I go. If it is prohibited I just don't go there. Last time I went to jury duty I informed the judge that I would not be back until the county provided a place for me to store my handgun while doing my civic duty. I will NOT leave it in my car. I have needed my gun once. I am sure glad I had it. I simply will no longer go where it is illegal. If family/friend is in hospital I might make an exception.
Being retired for quite a while has made this more plausible than those that are still working.

Do not carry while tubing down a whitewater river. Just don't do it. You'll either lose it or ruin it.

Don't open carry a long gun. Even if it's effective in getting handgun open carry legalized after over 100 years of being illegal.
Sorry Texas.

The word stainless is a likelyhood, not a certainty. They both can be lost, and one can be broken on the rocks. Plus you can't hit anything in white water.

One of the most valuable things my father ever taught me was to not worry about the stupid opinions of dopes who couldn't give a damn if I lived or died. That advice has kept me alive and out of jail for quite a while.

Years ago, when she found out I had my Ohio CHL, my mother told me she didn't want me to carry.
I just asked her if she intended to follow me around and act as my human shield. She replied "no", and that was the last such request on her part.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion even if it's wrong.
I didn't see anyone mention the recent SC church shooting in which nine people lost their lives. I don't know if it's legal to carry to church in SC but if there had been one profane individual amongst them how many could have been saved?

Another tempest in a teapot. Just as you will have the right to open carry at the beginning of 2016, the Whataburger chain will continue to have the right to tell you that it won't be allowed in their places of business. That's their right.
But I won't be surprised to see a few whiny ten-cent lawsuits filed by Texas gun owners who feel their rights are being trampled on cause they can't carry a gun while they're eating their junk burger and drinking their chocolate shake.
Speaking for myself, a burger (or anything else) prepared by a fast food "restaurant" simply ain't worth the trouble.

I believe that argument has been debated & covered extremely well in many of the Closed/Locked threads below (especially the recently locked OC v CC thread.)

You've not read the Constitution in conjunction with the Declaration, as intended. The god given inalienable rights are supported by the right to keep and bear arms . . .

Im afraid youre reaching. Can you maybe expand more to connect the dots? All im reading is God given in alienable rights such as life liberty and pursuit of happiness. If youre trying to state 2a falls under such as, then we'll get nowhere

Laws regarding firearms are NOT god given but cast in our Constitution where the term god is not even mentioned. Hope this fact does not provoke too massive an outcry. But fact is fact.

If one must read the Declaration of Independence ALONG with the
Constitution then how did women get the vote? The D of I does say 'all men'-- must have been a translation problem with 18th century English.
Oh well.

I never carry my gun. I tie a string to the trigger guard and drag it behind me.

Never carry a gun around people who have no sense of humor.

God given right in the constitution.
God given right. The day you were born you suck air.
The day you die you stop sucking air.
Was there something else god given.

If I am dressed, I am armed. I try to avoid places I can't carry - like NJ.

You do it, or not, your way. Your business. I'll do it, or not, my way. My business. That approach pretty well eliminates any necessity of fulminating, sarcasm and debate that can't be resolved.
Guess I'm too tired tonight for this kind of dead horse beating. I'll leave you guys to it.

Yes. The God given right to self preservation. To protect ourselves and family by any means necessary.
