Maryland conceal carry permits
Just wondering if any Maryland residents have gotten approval for a conceal carry permit. I don’t live in Maryland and am thinking of applying for a non resident permit as I do travel through there and it’s a pain to keep unloading and placing my carry firearm in a case in a area where I can’t get to it if I need it while visiting my children who live in MD, or passing through, plus I don’t like leaving a firearm in a unattended vehicle when going places with them if I meet them someplace. This is one of the only states I pass through that doesn’t honor my West Virginia permit. What are they looking for in the way of a reason, I was going to use that I travel through the state to visit my children living in MD, and passing through to visit other relatives in western West Virginia plus for personal protection. I know MD is a blue state so I’m sure they have a specific reason they are looking for. Any help would be appreciated as I haven’t been in MD for several years now as I don’t go where I can’t carry not that I miss going there but would like to visit my children without being unarmed.

Not going to happen. You cannot get a permit here without a business need or g&s. Very few people can get a permit. You have to show multiple documented attacks on your life in Maryland. Also. FOPA is not going to help you on transport since your destination is MD. Better leave it home or don't come. Sorry, it sucks but that is the law.

So it looks like nothing has changed in the state as far as them giving out permits. Thanks

Correct. Things may improve with new players involved. But, nothing has changed yet.

I was born and raised in Maryland and escaped to Tennessee (later South Carolina) when I was 17 (1966) before Maryland became a People's Republic.
My advise is that you should persuade your children to flee the state, perhaps helping them financially if necessary.

Maryland just sucks. That is why I
moved to West Virginia. No chance
of getting any change due to the fact
that the Democrats are in total
control despite a Republican governor.

I've tried my best to get them to move out here, even giving them the option of living with me for free. No takers from either of them. Guess I'm too hard to live with. They did say if things go south down there they know where there headed if they can make it here. I stuck it out as long as I could there because of the kids but when they flew the nest and their mother moved on I moved out with the new wife and been happy ever after, last time I went down to visit a couple years ago I remembered how bad it was and why I left. Best thing I ever did.

It is hard for me to accept that a part of the United States really can be so oppressive but I guess that is what we can expect when the U.S. Constitution is trampled by local politicians who are allowed to get things their way.

I dread when I go down there to see my daughter, granddaughter and SIL!
But what the heck, you should feel safe because everywhere you look you either see a Sheriff, State, County Police or some other kind of LEO. Seems down there everybody and his brother is LEO! :
Even though there is some nice property down there and some neat things to see I really don't care to much for the state of Maryland!

My son live in Elkridge and I wanted to give him a gun. It took about 3 weeks just for him to get his permit to have one. When I go up there to see him I will not travel without my guns. When I get to the Maryland line the gun goes into the back of the SUV (no trunk).

There is a better than fifty percent chance my son will move to the Baltimore area next year after he graduates from college. His girlfriend, a recent graduate, is from there and she accepted a position in the area. He is a shooter and I have told him about the draconian gun laws compared to VA. Perfume usually overrides gunpowder for a 22 year old guy....

Be careful how you transport firearms within the state. The Law wants them secured, as in locked in a container of some sort with the ammo also locked up and in a separate location from the firearm(s) - standard Federal regulations.
And they don't care much about out of state permits - they have no reciprocal agreements with any other state in the Union.

Maryland has a real GOTCHCA in their transportation laws: You can only transport firearms between specified locations. I worked 5 years in Silver Spring and lived 20 miles out in Laytonsville, so I could bring a gun in to drop off at the gunsmith, and afterwards take it home. But no side trips for shopping. No storing the gun in the car at work daily and then going to the range: work is not an approved destination.
Quote:
There are further regulations but essentially you can only transport a handgun between residence, to and from a repair shop, a shooting sporting event, between a residence and place of business if substantially owned and operated by the person. For more information please contact our Licensing Division.
|
It is illegal to just drive around with a gun in the car in Maryland, like playing tourist, or visiting relatives. The FOPA does not help you once you stop IN Maryland.
Quote:
If you travel through MD with the firearm unloaded and secured you are covered under Federal law. If you stop or interrupt your trip you then come under state law.

How does MD view LEOSA CCW licenses from out-of-state, merely passing through to, say, Delaware? Any differences (I'm thinking they probably don't care if you're LEOSA or not---you do what the kings say, end of discussion)?

Sounds like Maryland is gettin as bad a Ma. [UGH] Ma won't recognize permits from any other state either. Won't even sell ammo to non residents. My thinking is if ya got a permit for carry in one state it should be honored in all 50 states.

Stone-age politicians never willingly give up THEIR power to anyone else, including another state. Just keep your head down and pay your taxes. They know what is best for you.

Imposter?
If you are, in fact, a LEO (as your 'badge' suggests) you SHOULD be familiar with the provisions of LEOSA...a FEDERAL law.

No, I am not am imposter...been a retired LEO for 5 years. I am familiar with LEOSA and the fact it is a federal law. I could be wrong in thinking there MAY be a few jurisdictions out there i.e., Chicago, NYC, Maryland, Massachusettes, etc., just because of their restrictive gun laws, where such a permit might not matter very much. I don't know, that's why I asked the question, just so I'm better informed. I wouldn't think it would matter since it's a federal law, but in this day and age you never know and can't be too careful. If my thinking is wrong, so be it. My apologies for ruffling your feathers.

No feathers ruffled.
Upon reflection, my initial list was too harsh. I am sorry.
That said, you will have no worries whatsoever in the great state of Maryland re: LEOSA.
Be safe.

Here's how bad it is in MD.
A gentleman who witnessed a crime and was a witness for the prosecution received death threats before the trial started. Based on these well documented threats he was able to get a concealed carry permit.
Several years later when the convicted individual was paroled, the gentleman was not able to renew his concealed carry permit as it was felt that if the man was still dangerous he would not have been paroled, despite continuing to express his desire to get even with the witness.

Another example of why I haven't visited MD family since they moved back there 3 years ago.

Maryland's tight gun control has certainly worked wonders in Baltimore of late, no crime or murder problems there at all, right?

I lived there for 12 years and did a lot of different types of hunting there but you best have your gun stored right in your vehicle. Cost to much to live there so don't miss the place at all.

Maryland, New York, and New Jersey are not go States as far as I'm concerned. Too draconian in their fun laws. Delaware accepts one of my carry permits but I'm not sure I would want to go there either. In some ways the Northern East Coast is just as bad as the West, if not worse.
