POCKET CARRY
I love shooting the Shield, but wonder if it is practical to pocket carry. I have a 442 that I carry now, and would like to get a 9mm to share the duty. The Sig P 938 is an awesome carry gun, but 2x the price of the alternatives. I've thought about the Nano, P290, and CM9. The obvious size and weight choice would be the Kahr, but as with the others, they all seem to have a lot of problems. I know the Shield is not perfect, but seems the most reliable. Having love handles makes IWB uncomfortable. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. If the Shield carries as well as my 442, it's my 1st choice.

I'm 6'2' 200 lbs and can pocket carry the Shield in most pants in a Sticky holster. I usually wear Dockers with a pleated front to help with printing. Cargo shorts work but forget about tight jeans. It's a bit heavy but not uncomfortable.

I pocket carry a S&W Bodyguard 380 in a Sticky holster with no problem even in jeans and I'm 6 ft and 225. Works great for me.

My Shield is IWB only. I use the Bodyguard for pocket carry.

Your love handles can't be any bigger then mine and my EDC is a Shield 40 IWB. After a couple days of carrying it I don't even notice it anymore. I carry it just aft of the side pants pocket. I am a digital clock guy but I would guess the rest of you would call that 3:30 or 4 o'clock. I did collect a few holsters before I got one I like. Don

I've been Front Pocket carrying my Shield for over 3yrs now.
Jeans - Wrangler relaxed Fit. If 'Relaxed Fit' fits you snugly, move up to 'Loose Fit'.
Slacks - Dockers, Wrangler Slacks, or similar cut.
Cargo Pants/Shorts - Kept in the inner 'Slash' pocket... Not one of the outer 'Patch' pockets.
I take my Shield pants shopping with me, so I can test the fit in the store. If one style doesn't work, I try something else, until I find a Brand and cut that works.
Some brands that DON'T work... Levi's, Harley-Davidson and Old Navy

Try Duluth Trading Post Firehose Flex Pants. I can carry a full size, 5" 1911 in the front pocket. Those pockets are huge. They are all I wear. 6', 200 lbs. You can pocket carry anything if you get the right wardrobe.

Amen to that. When I shop for pants, I take a small measuring tape and check the pockets before I even try on the pants. If they don't measure at least 12 inches deep, I know they'll never work for pocket carry. I also prefer pleated pants, though I have at least one pair of plain front pants with 15-inch deep pockets that work well. Add an outside-the-pants shirt, and no one will ever notice.
I bought a Shield 9 to pocket carry, but I had some initial problems with its recoil spring assembly, which forced me to temporarily use my M&P 40c as my EDC. You know what? I've learned that the chunky 40c pocket carries just fine with a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster and the right pants. The extra weight of the 40c doesn't bother me much because I'm 6' 240 lbs., and I'm used to having my pockets weighted down with all manner of stuff anyway. My Shield is up and running now, so my problem becomes, which one to carry? Come to think of it, that's a good problem to have.

I don't like to dress based on what I will carry. What I carry has to fit with how I dress first.
I carry a kahr CM9 in my rear pocket in a pocket wallet holster. That works well for pretty form fitting slacks.
Since its summer I wear cargo shorts a lot. Then I use the shield in a sticky holster in my front pocket.
When I am working out, cycling etc. I wear a smart carry holster and carry either.

Agreed. I like my style of dress, and rather than change it to fit around a gun I bought carry guns that work with my style of dress (Bodyguard .380 & Shield 9mm).

Have you thought about OWB? I'm 6'-3"and 200lb, but getting a shield out of a pocket holster (quickly) is no easy task. I carry OWB at 4:30 without any problem at all.

I've found that the larger & heavier guns are too much for me to pocket carry. I'm 6' 2" & 190 but anything beyond 15 ozs. pulls my pants down, not my best look. The 442 or M&P .380 (dress slacks) seem to do the job just fine.

I carry my Shield in a Remora IWB holster at about 3:30. It's also made so you can use it for pocket carry. For me it's just a tad too heavy and I have a hard time getting it out of my pocket. Also sitting in the car with it in my front pocket is not only uncomfortable but almost impossible for me to pull it out.

I pocket carry a Taurus 617 7 shot revolver daily. It is in an altered Desantsis Nemisis pocket holster. I do have a few issues with it, but it works for me. My draw is not lightning fast but adiquate. At 67 years old nothing is lightning fast any longer.

I can pocket carry the Shield in some of my cargo shorts, but that's about it. Even then, it looks like I have a sack of coins weighing down my pocket.

Shield pocket carry
First of all, I've never had an issue regarding the reliability of the Shield over the 6 months I've owned it. Not one misfire or jam. I pocket carry it using a DeSantis holster in cargo pants or shorts using the inside pocket, not the outside pocket on the legs. If I don't have room for it, I carry a Sig P238 or my Bodyguard using Cor-Bon .380 Pow'rBall ammo (a really nasty round providing a JHP without the jams). But my Shield is by far my favorite carry. Regards, Elliot45

LOL... Thank goodness that someone invented the 'pocket pistol'. This makes me wonder how you guys would have carried in the 'Old Days' before Subcompacts came on the market (Pre LCP, P32 days).
(I'm guessing... Chief Special or Beretta Jetfire?)
While this goes against any/all 'Dress To Conceal' articles ever published, at least the Subcompact market has made your attitudes a viable option.

I'm 6'3" and weigh 245. I've carried my CM9 for 3 yrs. in Wranglers both relaxed fit and cowboy cut with no problem in my home made milk jug holster. I've found the CM9 to be absolutely reliable. I've had occasion to use it on poisonous snakes and various pests several times.

I carry the CM-9 and I don't think you'll read about many problems with that gun. The 380 version of the same gun is a different story.

I usually carry a 442, sometimes I carry my PPS with the 6 round magazine, in my front pocket of my jeans.
I like to have a bug that matches my primary guns caliber, although I usually only carry the bug.

I pocket carry every day and am very comfortable. BodyGuard 380 in a DeSantis Nemesis. My pockets are custom sewn in my pants and shorts to lock the holster and raise the rig for a quick, precise draw. Pocket carry is only as good as the pocket itself.

I pocket-carry either my M&P340 or 340PD daily. They ride in a DeSantis Nemesis. Of course, I only wear Wrangler regular-fit jeans in black. I am a walking bowling-ball now. I am 5'9" and weigh 220. Packed on the pounds after retiring eight years ago.

Stick with the 442. Don't over think this. The main thing is to have a reliable gun you can shoot accurately.

This has become my pocket carry gun, Sig P290RS. Some complain that it is too heavy, but it doesn't bother me.

"IWB uncomfortable"
I'm with you. I find IWB carry uncomfortable when I carry behind my hip. I also find it a little awkward reaching back to draw. May be due to my advanced years.
Someone suggested trying the appendix carry. I did and find it pretty comfortable. Drawing is much easier too. My IWB carry is a Smith 640 in a Kramer horsehide holster.
Of course you have to be careful about indexing. Don't want to blow away you family jewels.

I can't get my body guard to not print in front pocket with nemesis. I am average size with pretty good size hamstrings. However I found that in a back pocket it's much more comfortable and easier to hide. I am waiting on a wallet holster with a removable flap from pocket holsters. I find it easier to draw from back for me rather than front pocket. Has anyone else used a pocket holster zipper flap wallet?

Most people new to concealed carry worry too much about printing. Nobody should be looking that close. It could just be a big cell phone.

Don't flatter yourself!
Seriously, are you looking down at your pocket, or are you standing in front of a mirror? My wife can't even tell for sure if I am carrying or not. Depending on the pants, she can sometimes tell that I have "something" in my pocket, but she has mistaken my keys, or my knife for my pistol... and sometimes can't tell that I have anything at all.

There's nothong new under the sun. Since today is (I think) Mae West's birthday, born August 17th, 1892, it's appropriate that I repeat what may or may not be a quote from a 1933 movie: "She Done Him Wrong". The film starred Mae West and Cary Grant. Mae says to Cary Grant: "Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?" ApparentLy if he was carrying, he must have failed to prevent 'printing'.

I pocket carry all in my rotation. Alot of cargo deep pockets here. I pocked up my new mp 40 yesterday. Got a new stickey holster. The 40 and Springfield 45c is gonna. Bethe max i can pull off. I haven't. Tried. Either one in pocket yet. I did notice. The 40 seemes a bit heavier. Than the Springfield 45c.

The Shield is popular for IWB carry but at that point, I would rather carry an M&P9 Compact. I do have a Shield but it never gets carried because it's too big for pocket carry, and not big enough for hip carry.

The only advantage to pocket carry that I can see is that it’s easier to conceal. Concealment ranks pretty low on the priority list because there is no requirement to conceal to ‘100% undetectable’, nobody notices if your shirt has a slight bulge at the waistline, and even if they do I really don’t care. Besides all that, I wear regular jeans and I don’t like three quarters and nickel in my pockets, so forget about a pistol.

My Opinion!
Look after several years of teaching CHL classes and telling the student you need to be prepared! I decided to follow my and the Department of Public Safety's advice. If I have clothes on I have my 442 loaded with 125 grain +P silvertips. I mean anytime!
Doing yard work, fishing or shopping I have her with me in a in pocket holster.
If I am on the road traveling I have a Sig 220 or a Colt 1911 loaded with 230 grain hollow points. At times I have my 4 inch 686 in a hip holster but I always have the 442. At 6'2" and 285 the extra weight doesn't bother me.
This is a personal decision but the key factor is that if you need a gun the one at home or in the safe will not help you!

When I do pocket carry, it is an old bobbed hammer M60 or a newer 442 usually only as a backup to a belt gun. Before I got my CWP and was carrying strictly on my badge, Glocks were my only option, therefore a G27 was my only choice for pocket carry. It worked just OK with khakis, but was nearly impossible with jeans. The square back of the slide interfered with drawing the gun smoothly. I finally just went to belt carry and dressed around the gun, which is my policy today. That allowed me to almost always carry a full size Glock 22 along with one spare magazine. YMMV,

Another Thought!
As mentioned I carry a 422 in a in pocket holster. I carry it in my left front pocket. I am very right handed. I live in a remote area on a large lake. It is also Copper head country. So with water moccasin trying to come on the dock with us and copper heads wanting to stay in the shade when I weed the yard I draw it several times a week and several more to inspect it and for cleaning. I usually take my time and spend time thinking about awareness so that a left handed draw although slow will be quick enough.
Well when I walked into a very large cotton mouths sleeping quarters and he was very unhappy about it.
Well muscle memory served me well as I had him shot before I realized I was going for the pistol. Practice guys!
