I am thinking the following removal of the registration requirements will ease the legal problems of taking down nuisance drones:

Per the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia , The court struck down the FAA’s registration rule, referencing the 2012 FAA Modernization and Reform Act, which was passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama. That rule stated that the FAA “may not promulgate any rule or regulation regarding a model aircraft.”

Merriam-Webster:
Drone:

As a transitive verb:

Meaning #2 : "to pass or spend in dull or monotonous activity or in idleness"

I'm torn 2 ways on this. I'm a pilot and aircraft owner. I recognize the need to keep the airspace free. I don't want to be shot at or even chastised for flying over someones "airspace" On the other hand I don't want a drone looking in my windows.

What about using a bolo?? Wrapped around the rotors would bring it down.

OK ..simple fix ...everybody get out their old potato cannons ...get you a huge piece of the woven plastic net used to hold straw on a hill side ...attach some plastic beads like nickle size or so in size around the perimeter to spread it and retain kinetic energy ...then it will be like packing a parachute as to how to fold, roll or pack it ....maybe in a walmart bag ...or maybe a couple light rubber bands around the balled up net .....I am confident of 3 things ...you guys can figure out the correct payload packing ...will get at least a 40 yard range of accuracy ....and no cop will have any idea how to write up a plastic sewer pipe!

Why in the Hell are you living in a county that prohibits the discharging of a firearm?

Someone should use a safety concern as justification for shooting down a drone where it was otherwise legal to discharge a firearm. The defense might be that if a drone flying over head over private property uninvited, was to loose power or loose radio control, it could come down on top of people with the propellers spinning at high-speed and could seriously hurt someone. Aside from the trespass, the issue of liability insurance should be raised, requiring drone operators to carry sufficient insurance in the event that their drone cause dame or injury to private property or a person.

I had a drone hovering over me the other day while I was shooting my revolver. I had just ran out of ammo so I gave it the Clint Eastwood hand signal. Pretty soon it was on its way.

I would just about bet people will or already have used drones to spy on neighbors. If you shoot down a drone you better hope the drone camera wasn't on you when you shot it down. I am also guessing you will at least have a legal problem on video against you.
This world sure is changing at a fast pace. Are we really safe from prying eyes in our own house or back yard?

Well we now have another confirmed, non-dangerous, anti-drone technology.
This one wipes out all the others.

Who cares what a soccer fan did to a drone...in Argentina, no less?

This is apparently another of those threads that will not die.

I haven't read all of the comments in this thread because its so D@@@@ Long but it seams to me that if you have a problem in your neighborhood with drones, I would fight fire with fire. Go buy myself a drone and hook a small net to the bottom with light weights to hold it open and fly up to attack position and fly into the creeper. Once the rotors get caught, down it comes. Now of coarse you will need to build a type of breakaway system to the light net so it doesn't bring yours down but either way, I would get great satisfaction chasing the opposition away....LOL

You can't legally fly a drone higher than 400 feet without a commercial license. That's well within the range of a goose gun.

In lieu of firearms, you could attach a gill net to a drone of your own and simply snag the intruding beastie.

Yeah the TP was worth a month's salary or more next door in Venezuela but is still cheaper than the official US Army response which is kicking off with $16M seed money.

This is going to become a much more serious problem and the US military is taking it seriously. There have been several reports of ISIS using drones to attack coalition troops in Syria and western Iraq.

The technology is rapidly evolving and has reached the point where just about anyone can "weaponize" a drone for illicit purposes. Recently, a prison escape was facilitated by using a drone to fly in contraband weapons and a cell phone.

The answer to the problem is not going to be regulation or hitting it with toilet paper. I think the the answer will be using electronics to disrupt the flight controls and/or hacking into the system to take control of the drone away from the operator.

All of which can be applied to drones used by UPS or for any other legitimate purpose.

The Drone Wars, begun they have.

Default Anti-Drone tools tested

Anti-Drone Tools Tested: From Shotguns To Superdrones | WIRED
Phoenix-based security consultancy Bishop Fox tests some anti-drone tech.

"After his tests, Brown remains hesitant to point to any of the three products he tried as the best. He argues that the results show that each has its own application. The Sky Net shells might be the cheapest and most practical in an isolated setting, like the Arizona firemen whose helicopters and planes couldn't approach a forest fire in June because a hobbyist's drone hovered nearby. The short-range net guns might be most useful for celebrities or others trying to fend off paparazzi. (Hopefully in more temperate climates.) And the SparrowHawk could be used by corporations trying to keep spy drones away from their factories or movie sets."

These things must easy to damage as I have seen several of these stories and not every shooter was a skeet or trap champion.

Cool 25 posts starting in 2015

Let's be fair, Watchdog...25 posts on this, and two since you said this?

"This is apparently another of those threads that will not die."

That's a fair amount of dead horse beating!

I am amazed at the number of people that post about the ILLEGAL action they may take. Good idea to keep information of your activity to yourself.
As far as the worry of someone looking at their bikini clad daughters, don't those same daughters ever go to a public pool?

The thread's over two years old. The horse is beyond dead. It should be allowed to rest in peace.

I used to shoot a bit of skeet before bird season(s) and it occurs to me that an enhanced target for this kind of practice would be a small hand sized drone.
Both Star Wars and Dune used a device like this for martial practice.
Inexpensive would be an advantage too.
Maybe packaged so as to be launchable from the normal clay thrower.

"Sure, a Google satellite image isn't real time. My point is (was) that if someone wants to "spy" on you, there's very little can be done about it. Don't think there aren't satellites or other forms of aerial surveillance that can't watch you in real time. A drone, for instance, hovering over your home at...oh, say 1500 feet or 2000 feet that can watch you when you're outside, and can see infrared images of you inside. "

I was mapping some habitat rehab projects as part of the final status report for Congress. Several were small areas within the City, so I took a look at my home. Could identify my larger GSP in the back yard!

Default My thought

I didn't read through all 298 replies. My thought is, foremost, is it legal to discharge a firearm in the specific area whether or not you're shooting at a drone? If it is illegal to discharge a firearm, then shooting at a drone will get you criminal penalties because you might find it difficult to meet the standards for lawful deadly force that would justify the use of a firearm.

Luckily, I live where better than 70% of my neighbors have shooting benches,,,

There is a LOT of skeet shooting,, each weekend that the weather is nice,,

Yesterday, at least 3 families were shotgun shooting,, I was shooting a rimfire pistol.

A drone NEVER flies over,, it would not last long,,,

How about just don't be a worm and not fly over my property? If you do, then you lose your drone. Consider it ballistically confiscated. Enough said. Whine all you want from outside the perimeter. You aren't allowed to walk there, don't fly there. People that have these things and feel the need to fly over other's homes and property are lacking something mentally, morally and spiritually. No better than a peeping Tom and just as worthy of ill will.
