Default moon clips for carry concealed

Both of my revolvers are cut for moon clips, but I don't use them because I have not found a reasonable way to carry backup ammo in moon clips for carry concealed.

Has anyone solved the carry concealed/moon clip issue?

Three ideas:

Speed loader belt pouches will hold moon clips also. I would get the ones that completely enclose the clips. If you are talking moon clips for a 5 shot J frame, then a large speed loader pouch will hold two clips.

Also, the old plastic 35 mm film canisters will also work for the small J frame moon clips.

Medicine vials will also work. Longer ones will hold two clips.

My EDC is a 7 shot; the other is for hot weather and is a 5 shot. But it is pretty bulky to carry and you have to have it in something or risk unclipping some ammo or having the clip catch on something.

I use the HKS double speed loader carrier and pad the bottom with folded and taped bubble wrap to raise the rounds up so that moonclips can be picked out easily and also so the snap flap compresses the rounds into the bubble wrap to eliminate rattling.

I carry a 45 Cal revolver that uses moon clips.
I carry two half moon clips in the watch pocket of my Wranglers.

I have a Model 642 that has a cylinder that has been cut for moon clips. This used to be my EDC until I switched to my current EDC of a Model 638-1 and a Model 38-0. When carrying the Model 642, I briefly considered using one of these:

Del Fatti Leather - PMC

A bit pricey, but it looks like it would do a fine job of carrying the somewhat delicate moon clip I wanted to carry as a reload. Instead, I used a large pill bottle which I carried in the cargo pocket of my jeans and shorts. Since switching to the Bodyguards, the Model 642 has become the wife's bedside gun when I'm away from the house.

Regards,

Dave

Front pocket. Been doing it for years. Check regularly at the range. Zero issues.

Depends on your pockets. I never had trouble with two, separated by a handkerchief. Wouldn't put anything else in that pocket.

As bulky as the moon clip carriers are, I'd just as soon go with a New York reload and carry my 640 Pro or (probably better) my 340PD (at about 12 ounces empty and about 16 ounces loaded).

I carry two moon clips in a horizontal case designed for a small flip phone on my belt. They fit side by side and are easy to remove. It seems to work better than having one clip stacked on the other.

I thank everyone for their suggestions. Right now I am carrying a "New York Reload" (640Pro) on a cross draw. The 686 is on my strong side.

I could move the 640 to my ankle. Which makes more sense probably. When seated in the car the strong side weapon is not accessible. The cross draw is, and probably the ankle is even more so. I will have to check.

I use Perry suspenders so weight is not an issue. (Perry suspenders attach directly to the belt and not to the pants. It takes almost all of the load off the belt.

I have an old pager case that holds 5 J frame full moon clips (3 on the bottom row, 2 on the top row). For N frame moon clips, I use Mace cases. One mace case holds three full moon clips stacked. If I am pocket carrying, I either put some loose rounds in my pocket or two or three Five Star speed loaders.

These work great:

I know this is not of moon clips...

...still, it's a good pic of how easy it would be to conceal them. With this setup, I have no trouble concealing everything under a loose shirt. Someone with a smaller girth might have more difficulty.

I'm also a big fan of the New York Reload, and actually prefer carrying two handguns over carrying a loaded revolver and a moon clip(s). Here's a link to a photo of my EDC:

$750 to spend-Which Jframe would you choose?

I have both a 627Pc and a J-Frame with moon clips. With the 627 I use a regular speed loader case at the 5 o'clock position, one loaded moon clip per side, only I carry it upside down. After unloading the spent moon clip I just bring my right hand back to the inverted speed loader case, use my thumb to pull down the velcro strap and the loaded moon clip just falls into my hand. I still have the revolver, with cylinder open in my left hand. I insert the loaded moon clip, close the cylinder and am good to go. I did 3 gun matches with my local club and practiced this, always using the inside case first. I was the only revolver out of about 30 shooters. I won't say I was faster reloading than the guys with pistols, but after a couple of years I was quite happy with my reloading with the 627.

I'm disabled and all thumbs. I do not even try to reload the J-Frame any more. I carry an ankle holster with a 3913 if I need a reload when I carry it.

El Paso Saddlery make single and dual moon clip holders. Works fine under a loose shirt with the tail out.

Why would you want to if a speed loader is available, which I'm sure it is? Just to be quaint?

I don't anything that uses moon clips but, my 45s. I have a bunch of other calibers and have speed loaders for them. Point is I can reload my moon clip guns way faster than any of the others with speed loaders. I used to compete using speed loaders and am quite familiar with them, but they don't come close to moon clips.

Even if you don't use moon clips for a reload, I think there is a benefit to ejecting the emptys. Also handy if you have to unload the gun either for storage, or cleaning.

I like moon clip revolvers, but carry speed loaders or strips for reloading.

I carry moonclips in the cargo pocket of my 511 trousers for my M625 Mountain Gun or a speedloader for my Colt Agent.

I have a 625 and a 1917 Brazilian contract. I carry the 1917 as a woods gun often. I own about 250 full moon clips and about 20 half moons. the full moons most often are carried in the jacket pocket on the left side. The revolver never leaves my right hand. when empty the cylinder is opened then ejected on the ground the left quickly finds a new clip, which is loaded and cylinder closed. The sights never leave the target, if there is one. This is the system that Mr. Weaver invented all those years ago for speed loaders! Do it for practice. Do it for fun. Do it for real! pick up the empties when the shooting is over

As an aside; My F-I-L once competed against Weaver, and beat him with his own system, The both laughed about it over beer together, but Weaver retired form competition the next year and my F-I-L went on for the next 25 or so.

With practice, speed loaders, let alone mood clips, have faster sustained fire than single stack autos in good hands and most double stack auto in not so good hands! Ivan

My issue would be that there is a lot less to grab on a moon clip than on a speedloader, unless I'm missing some new gadget. The way I fumble around, that moon clip would be on the deck more often than in the revolver . . .

Few months back I purchased a SP101 in 9mm and was hunting for a moon clip pouch for carry. I was on the Simply Rugged web site and I saw a moon clip pouch advertised for the 625 N frame. It resembled a regular speed loader pouch with a relief cut out of the front for accessing the clip. Looked very functional. Problem was it had no top to secure the moon while carrying. Gave me an idea for a little experiment.

I had a J frame pouch that I had purchased along with a holster awhile back. Got out the tin snips and cut a similar access window along with trimming the top flap. Top flap was naturally much too long being made to cover the speed loader handle and longer .357 bullets. All the cutting now eliminated both snap pieces so I contacted the maker in regard to having a new snap installed but was refused. No other local leather guys so I just Gorilla glued a couple pieces of Velcro to the now shortened cover and pouch. Probably works better since it opens faster than a snap would and is plenty secure.

Grabbing the reload moon clip is as fast as grabbing a speed loader and reloading the gun is hands down faster.

The previous post fro Hook 686 in regard to the upside down Uncle Mikes speed loader pouch is also a very good idea. Let gravity do the work.

Simply rugged just started making a concealable moonclip carrier. I believe it's a new design and I plan on getting two of them soon. I will post a review at that time. Moonclips are the best one step option for reloading and unloading in any tactical or defense situation. The speed factor is really impressive and keeps my favorite wheel guns relevant in today's auto world. Great post here! Moonclips are the best option and surprisingly there are few option available for actual every day personal defense carry. It's 2015 and we are still carrying our moons in old pill bottles, film canisters and whatever else we can make up!!

You would quickly learn to to grab the clips and insert them. No knob to fumble for or twist while holding the cylinder from turning. Less to fumble. At the range I usually just fill a jacket pocket full of loaded clips. My left hand goes into the pocket and grabs a clip and has it ready as my right ejects and rolls the gun down to accept them. Close it up and go. Don't take that long to make it an a reflex reaction. If I was going to start shooting competition again, I would have them mounted on the peg like holders off my belt.

Anther big plus is picking up your empties all nice and neat in groups of 6. Then there is the fact I can buy a lot of clips for the price of one speed loader. I have enough clips that I never have to mess around with loading them at the range. Not so with my guns that use speed loaders.

I would love a small framed 5 shot 45 that ran moon clips. I have 3 different 44 5 shooters that I use for cc with speed loaders which are more bulky than clips and less secure. I guess I could make clips for them and cut them. Wouldn't bother me on my CA Bulldog or Taurus 431, but wouldn't do it to my 696.

Faster unload, faster reload. To my hand, they're also less fumbly than a speedloader if you use your index finger down the center stabilizing the rounds, and your thumb and middle finger to load.

Quaint? Odd...

Hap,
Only those who have actually used moon clips can appreciate how much easier and faster a reload can be. Especially with the shorter pistol calibers.

I use moon clips for both a PC 627 and a PC 586 L-Comp. Hands down faster than a speed loader. Round nose bullets load instantly, hollow points take a little more intentional effort.

If I can't reasonably use a pocket, I store one in a Galco speed loader case.

MATCH YOUR MOON CLIPS TO YOUR AMMUNITION. TK Custom Moon Clips Match Grade at .025" thickness are best, but some bullets, such as Speer Gold Dot will need .020. The S&W moon clips are best for Winchester.

Sometimes a specific gun / ammo combo will only take a certain moon clip. For example, in my 586 L-Comp with Speer Short Barrel Gold Dot .38+P, only S&W Clips have a clean fit.
