Home invasion
At 8:00 am, a home invasion took place on my street, two blocks south. Two men were shot in their lower extremities. One perp is in custody, two are at-large. Yes, this can happen anywhere.
I have never been a look-over-my-shoulder kind of guy. I scan the tree line like most of you but now my spidey sense is tingling.
I normally keep an LCP in my pocket as I would an inhaler but I have issued new orders.
Ruthie (CCL) now carries the LCP, my daughter, who lives with us has my Bersa Thunder when she is home. I have gone back to carrying my 6906 with an SD9VE in the night stand.
Again, I have never been a prepper or bug-out guy but I just feel more at ease this way.
Circumstances do dictate one's actions.
Thanks for letting me ramble as understanding is what you folks do best.

Understand where you are coming from. I have a gun within reach 24 hours a day. Odds are I will never need it but the one time I do need it and it is not there it could cost me my life.

You can never be too careful.
Assuming you are aware of the Jeff Cooper color codes of awareness, the only time you are in the "white" is in your home, doors locked, dog at your feet, alarm set, gun handy. I forget where I read that particular description but I like it.
You are correct - a home invasion can happen anywhere, anytime. Lock your doors, pay attention when going outside, and be armed. That's really the best that you can do. Situational awareness coupled with the ability to fight back is all anyone can hope for in self defense, inside or out.
Having a gun available when you need it is far better than not having it available because in the latter case you might never need it again.......

Must be awful losing some sense of security. I hope the resident is ok after it all.

Have to ask.... who was shot, and who did the shooting? You left it a little ambiguous.

Listen to that tingle, the little voice in your head, the short hairs whatever.

You can post media links. I've read four separate news sites' reports and still can't figure out if the two men shot were intruders or were in the home; that no arrests have been made indicates the latter...

The two shot were the boy friend of the woman who lives there and his brother. Attempted robbery. It seems the house is well known to police. The blocks are very long and I had no clue about this house.

Growing up in NYC, everyone used a floor anchored Fox Police Lock. This was a heavy steel rod placed in a bracket in the floor about 30" in front of the door and tilted at a 45 deg angle to lock into a steel box on the door. My cousin who retired from the NYFD says that they are the hardest locked doors to break through, and the NYFD are unequaled when it comes to breaking stuff. The current style which does not block the hallway the way the original did, utilizes two gear-toothed steel bars that extend from the center of the door to anchored brackets on both sides. Both were ugly but effective.
As bad as the junkie crime wave was back then, they never got through the front door, and the fire-escape windows had bars, so usually the threat was robbery on the street.

So was this "home invasion" a drug deal, or a domestic?
They always are.

Always keep in condition yellow.
That said, from what the murky details are, I'd say this was probably not a 'random' home invasion. Both victims being shot in the legs rings of something more afoot.
Stay safe.

Sorry for the lack of detail. The reasons why matter not. The fact that it happened on my street is unsettling. 2 men wounded in Norwood home invasion shooting | Local News - WLWT Home

Often, but not always. Sometimes it happens to people who genuinely didn't have it coming. Stay frosty.

my neighbors house was burgled at 6:45 am a few months back. they were out for their morning walkies thank God. when I'm home I carry my G26 now. I also have the G41 in easy reach. if/when they try, I want to be prepared to defend my family, my home, and my stuff in that order... no offense to LEOs here or in your town, but response times are 5-10 min even on 911 calls. I am the first responder.

Yes the stats say home invasion about every 15seconds. Leo response time is useally around 10 minute mark in real time emergency. Fire in hole if needed

NO, they AREN'T.
When a friend was living in the Houston area, home invaders went after an Asian couple. Unfortunately for them, the husband was an ex-Biet Dong Quan. As the line from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" goes, they "chose badly".
When I was a kid on the south side of Chicago, there was a rash of home invasions in our neighborhood, causing my father to put up gates on the windows and doors and a prop rod in the front door. Are you saying that we were drug dealers? Our finances certainly didn't reflect that.
Besides, if the cops can get the wrong address, so can home invaders.

Sounds like they were drug dealers. A large majority of home invasions are drug related. Still, I'm armed inside my home. A coworker was a victim several years ago of a home invasion that was drug related, but the gang bangers had the wrong street. The house they wanted was two streets over.
Nobody said criminals were smart.

Rusty, all the details or not, it still happened near your family, and you have every reason to be worried. Glad that Ruthie and the rest are OK, and are willing to do something to help protect the old homestead. To many folks are willing to be victims waiting for the police/sheriff to arrive.
Hang in there pal, and keep a weather eye out.
