Haven't got my CC yet here in California, but I own a variety of both wheel guns and semi-autos, but since there are magazine capacity limitations here, and a high capacity semi is out of the question. I plan on carrying either my Model 65 Taurus (don't snicker) .357 4-incher, or maybe my Bersa Firestorm .380. Neither has high capacity, but I guess can do the job. Did consider one of my Nagant revolvers, but would hate to be laughed at by a would-be assailant....you call that a gun? This..is a gun...

Transit,
The Sioux Indians from the Pine Ridge Reservation use to come to Cheyenne Frontier Days when I was but a wee lad.
His assigned "american" name was Dewey Beard. He was an old old man when I talked to him just as a kid to a real live Indian.
50 years later I learned he had been a young boy at the time of the battle and watched it take place from the village
I became student of the battle over the years and I keep thinking boy would I like to talk to Old Dewey now.

Hi, Sayoc01:
Don't give up hope, God loves youngsters, and as shure as night follows day, you will someday mature. You don't have, or need a choice in the matter. A good account of this is given by Mark Twain, in his observation of how stupid his father seemed to him as a boy of 17, and how much his father had learned in just one year, after he had reached the age of 19. The dates, and story may be a bit off on this, as I am beginning to revert back to the superior intelligence my youth, and it's giving me a sick sense of humor. The lady shooters are probably out comparing notes on how to get the young guys to jump through hoops, and do other useful tricks. for them. OBTW we "old poops", with all the ailments still love you too.

i've checked with other gals who shoot.
they avoid these sites due to political differences with most of you.
i try to avoid that subject because i have been attacked in nasty ways on other gun forums.
like it or not, most girls who shoot are liberal.

I'm 67 and not planning to grow up at all...I carry both in Chgo depending on the area.... 640, 642, Shield or FS 9. Neighborhoods matter here.

This thread (and being 72) inspired me to carry this 66-no dash today.

I'm 81 and pick my carry of the day, based on what and where I'll be on that day. Five choices and I regularly practice with each one. My age does not determine the type of gun.

It's not stainless steel...it's nickel. The 15's came in blue or nickel finish. Thanks for your comment!

They are all strictly utilitarian to me.
I find J frames to be probably the most uncomfortable guns to shoot. Not from the recoil perspective but from their small grip size and short distance from the grip to the trigger. It just doesn't work for me. I need something to take up all that space in my grip. But this is the, same problem with tinny tiny pocket autos. Even 1911s and 3rd gen S&W with the plastic pannels I find a little to thin.
K frames with Hogue grips work good but then I'm carrying double the weight with 1/2 the ammo.
I do use J frames for carry but only when I need something absolutely small and discreet and clothing would otherwise prohibit a FS or compact semi auto.
My dad wanted a little revolver to carry but he's not a gun guy so I know for a fact that practice would be zero. I kept trying to make him understand that a J frame is hard to shoot and practice is a must. I finally got him to the range and boy was I sorry!. First, he brought his coffee cup. There is no table to put that on except the little shelf in front of you where all the ammo and targets are. Second, when he got to shoot he immediately took the dueling position. ...fail! And finally. ..third, at 5 yards he gave the target a lot of laud warning shots! No J frame for him (soup nazi voice)!

Try the Delta Ergo grip on the J Frame.

I am almost 65 now and I Retired from the Police Force after 34 years. I carried a model 10 and 19 for most of those years. When we went to semi in the late 80's, I of course had to change but only on duty. I like the J Frame Mod 60 the best. I do also own a PC Shield that I carry also..I also have a Smith Model 460 Magnum that I play with at the range and also a AR-15. I just like guns , so if that makes me young or old...that's ME !!!

A friend of mine carries a Chief Special from 1956 and he's not all that great in gun maintenance and I couldn't stand to see the old girl get any worse so I gave it a detailed cleaning and got rid of some rust. As I was doing it I realized how much I missed a J frame so I'm looking for either a 36 or a 60.
But the reason I stopped carrying a revolver was because of the lack of a manual safety. My son was 3 when I had he 36 and he asked to see my 36 as I was putting in in the safe. I'm in the "take the curiosity out of the gun" camp so I unloaded it and gave it to him cylinder open. He took it, closed the cylinder, cocked the hammer, and pulled the trigger. Then he said "I killed the dinosaur".
Now, I never taught him any of that. Probably learned it watching tv or something. But it freaked me out so I sold the gun and switched to a Ruger lc9 and then to an lc9-s. I like the manual safety and may disconnect. I just can't get the feeling that if I had a one second brain fart (I'm fanatical about locking up my guns), that either of my children could too easily operate a revolver. To a competent person, they are generally safer, being able to see the rounds in the cylinder and making the gun safe by opening it. But to a child, they are too intuitive.
|
Hiding, by getting rid of a problem, just makes it come back another day. When I noticed my two boys, ages 5, and 6 years old, were playing Cops, and robbers, and blowing each other away with their cap guns, I took them both out on the open ended breezeway, this was out in the country, with no one living close to us, Told them this is what a real gun does, and carefully let both of them fire a few shots from an old .22 cal. short revolver. To say the least, they were really impressed with the muzzle, and cylinder flash, and jump, plus the unbelievably loud report of that old .22 cal. short revolver. Needless to say that after their training at that tender age, on how to handle fire arms, and what they would do, there were always loaded firearms kept in our house safely after that. They also didn't have to learn a ton of bad habits on their own, for someone else to retrain as adults.

I'm 68, soon to be 69. I hope. There are a few autos that I carry on a regular basis. I also carry a 642, a Colt Agent, or more recently a M66-2 2.5". The latter is my favorite to shoot, but I've got to decide on a good OWB holster for it. It's heavy. I know the 66 loaded with some .38/44 type loads will take care of business if needed. The lightweight guns with .38+P will likely do as well, but the K frame can do it better.

I have a 360PD AirLite that is my constant AIWB carry weapon. It's super light weight makes carrying it completely natural and unnoticed. I can even clip it to my sweatpant's elastic band without sagging for home carry.
The recoil is of course quite vicious and I have a 340 Pro Series (all steel) that I shoot. The AirLite has been fitted with some CT laser grips that, besides providing a quick aim point, also has a cushioning air channel covering the backstrap that absorbs some of the painful recoil.
The snubby is my primary carry weapon, but I sometimes also carry a Kimber Ultra Carry as backup to it when I feel that five shots may not be enough. (although I do carry a speed strip with five more).
I've also got a 9mm CS9 Chief's Special that takes the place of the Kimber when I want to downsize my backup gun. But my favorite 9mm auto is a 3914 LadySmith.
For SuzieQz:
I'd like to shoot like some girls I've seen.

I'll have you know that I'm a young 78 and carry a PPKS built by S&W only because it lies flatter than my 36s. Love shooting all my revolvers and 1911 types. Can still see the front sights and usually make the youngsters at the range look up and pay attention! Also, really like seeing more lady shooters at the range and have run into quite a few who can shoot circles around some of those young male know-it-alls!

33... So I don't believe I qualify as an "old guy" quite yet. I have a G43 I carry on occasion but 95% of the time I carry either my 642 or 342 depending on which one draws my attention in the safe that morning.

I'm 30, and I own but two pistols, one being a Ruger Mk III. I can't think of many more I'd want. Maybe a Glock 30. I already have a 1911, so all I'd want is a dedicated smith'd-up lower for my .22 conversion to shoot bullseye with.
Wheelguns, though, that's a different matter. My lottery list:
-610
-929
-something in .45 Long Colt, probably a single-action
-a 27 or 627
-66
-686+
-a Model 38 Bodyguard
-a 69 Combat Magnum
-More K-38s...as in, as many as I can find
-the X-frame .44 Magnum S&W should make that they never will
-a vintage Dan Wesson in .44 Magnum
I like semiautos. I really do. But I have a 1911, and beyond the Glock 30, I'm just not interested in any more. I can't appreciate the fine nuances. Revolvers, though--that's a bottomless pit of irrational hunger.
And for CCW, there's simply no question. .38 snubbies all the way. If you're worried about capacity and reload...bring two.

Almost 66 and I carry either a SD9VE or Tristar C100. Never have carried a revolver although I am looking for a .32 Mag revolver for my wife. She is 70 with arthritis getting a bit tough on her. She has problems manually racking a slide..... if in an emergency she had to clear the weapon because of a FTF or FTE. I am finding a .32 revolver is hard to find, and not real cheap. Found one used .....S&W in a LGS...$475!!

Do only old guys carry revolvers? Doesn't sound like it, does it? I'm only 72, so will have to let you know what I carry when I get old.
Are you old enough to know of Bill Jordon and his excellent book "No Second Place Winner"? He pointed out that if he and another met in an alley, both drew and fired at the same time, both had a bad round under the hammer, he had a revolver and the other had an autoloader, "other" was dead. Pulling the trigger to bring a fresh round under the hammer is infinitely faster than tap, rack, bang.
Just a thought.

Eb07, you are fight on. My sons started shooting both revolvers and semiautos (and rifles and shotguns) with me when they were just little guys. Now they are older, but both have enjoyed and owned revolvers most of their lives. Quality revolvers offer some unique advantages over autos, but just to be safe, I own lots of both. By the way, one might make the same observation about females vs males (regarding which type of gun they prefer to carry).

It's definitely not only old guys who edc revolvers. I'm 22, and the gun I carry most frequently is my Highway Patrolman from 1954. As far as handguns go, I own 6 revolvers and 3 autos. Two of the autos are little pocket pistols, only one of which gets carried, and only as a backup to the HP or if I need to wear a shirt tucked in. The other auto is a full size Beretta, which I probably wouldn't even own if it didn't shoot so well. I'm a revolver guy through and through, and apparently I have been since I was about 6. My dad says I kept asking him to buy one so I could shoot one (he had other guns, just not revolvers). The HP goes pretty much everywhere with me, and I get to open carry it when I go to work at the local gun shop. A lot of the customers are impressed and happy to see a younger guy carrying a revolver. One of my co-workers there, also 22, also has a revolver for edc, but his is a newer M&P 340

I turn 65 real soon and I carry an LCR 357 loaded with 38spl+P. It has been my everyday carry since I bought it 5 years ago. I like it fits in my jeans pocket easily along with the safety and reliability over a semi auto make it my choice for carry.
The trigger on the LCR even though is DAO is the best trigger on any revolver I have shot except my Colt Python.
I have a Kimber Ultra Carry ll 45acp that I just love the feel in my hand and its size but I just don't like the safety of the 1911 cocked and locked carry so it stays in my bed side table.
I sold off most of my semi autos and now revolvers are the main stay for me.

At 62, my edc is this M640-1. It's recently been joined by a "no lock" M&P340.
The 1911's haven't been out of the safe, for a while now...

This thread reminds me of the movie, "The Way of the Gun," where ol' James Caan's character totters around in his "Members Only" jacket and with a J frame S&W while everybody else has shotguns, 1911s, and a Galil.

i'm 33 and typically carry either my 1911 (Springfield TRP) or this Ruger GP100 Match Champion. If I need to go small and light, it's a Makarov. Only steel guns suit my tastes---that's just my preference.

I retired from LE 10 years ago. Back in the early 90's when my department switched to autos I held off as long as I could. I carried a S&W M65 until forced to convert to a Sig P220 then a Glock 22. Within 2 years of retirement I traded off all autos for revolvers (all S&W) so I now have more handguns than ever but all wheel guns. My daily carry is a 642 and I feel well armed. Qualify for LEOSA yearly.

I'm 27 and I carry two every day. A 66 and a 629. Have carried wheel guns since I got my permit at 21. Only rarely with an automatic usually a Sig 1911 or a p227.

Teaching Process

After following this 5 page discussion on how little us old poops have learned from the previous 5 younger generations that have followed us down the pike. Here is a prime example, This brilliant young man describes how hard it is to teach his father any thing. imagine the hardships that he has gone through teaching his father anything while he was growing up. I am finding that our "Old Poop"learning processes were all wrong, Hearing with our mouths, talking with our ears etc. We "Old Poops" could have been well educated if we had just shut up and listened. Now while I am on a rant, I obtained my first centerfire defensive type weapon, new, in 1952, a S&W Mod. 15, and quite a collection of many other types, and calibers to compliment it with, followed, and have been used for different kinds of carry situations. No need to pick one type, but my most carried CC one, is a .32 L.S. Seecamp, and the most shot, is a toss up between the S&W Mod. 15, and a 1963 Colt Gold Cup National Match .45 ACP. One thing I'v noticed changing over the years, Handguns are increasing in size, and power, thanks to "Rag Writers" like Keith. I fell behind at the .44 Mag, and have, but don't use my larger caliber, TC contender pistols anymore or ordered wheels for any ether. Don't have a need for larger cal. handguns anymore, as I can't handle the recoil, what with the authorities, and loss of strength I'v decided not to shoot them anymore. Sure was fun while it lasted tho!

I'm a little under 60 retired law enforcement. When I started I carried a S&W K frame on duty and a J frame off duty. In the early 90's when they started going to semis I retired my duty revolver for a Glock. I always kept my J frame for off duty or plain clothes work. These days my semi's are retired and when I go out I'm carrying one of my revolvers.

I'm thinking that 3 years old is a bit TOO young to start letting children handle firearms, although I agree with the idea of educating them about guns when they are able to handle the information.

64-years old, active law enforcement, and packing (on-duty) the Colt Official Police primary and secondary a 4-inch heavy barrel Model 10-6, both in blue steel. Started in 71 with the S&W Model 10-5 as my Dept.-issue and later up-dated to the Model 10-6. My Colt came about as a Christmas 71-present from loving parents. Clung to both over the passing years and was grand-fathered in with them in 92, when the semi-auto pistol replaced the service revolvers. Never, ever felt that the trusty revolver, in trained hands, was not enough. I will soon meet year 46 in years served.

Youngsters from 20 years of age with a stout body and keen eyes can shoot any type of weapon..... no problems at all.
When you get around 40 years old you may need glasses and your body may have been run over once or twice, so there are a few problems to deal with but the pistol and revolver are still do able.
As for me at 72 years old..........
the revolver and pistol have both given me problems now that I have Bi-focals and a stigmatism.
However a visit to my new eye doctor for a retread job and new lenses in both eyes have put me back to when I was thirty years old and making myself proud with a snub nose 38.
You will hear less whining from the old guys if they have insurance and some extra $$$ laying around.
It sure is nice to be able to see the front sight...............
and the target at the same time and both in focus!!
Do they make 1" barrel revolvers ?
