I am 69 and started shooting revolvers in 1952. My first handgun as a teenager in the 1960s was a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 magnum. I own more revolvers than semi-autos. My EDC is an ultra-modern Colt or Dan Wesson government model 1911.

J frames are supposed to be uncomfortable with factory grips, just like K frame M&Ps. With exceptions for some people with different hands or strange ways of aiming a pistol, S&W revolvers are in general unusable with factory grips. If your J frame is a steel RB, you can probably make it work with a Tyler. If it a SB, you can almost surely make it work with a Tyler. If it is a RB Airweight, you may be able to make it sort of work with an extremely firm grip, or, better, with some large aftermarket grips which make it less concealable.

Obviously, these guidelines are not written in stone, and vary somewhat with the individual, but anyone who expects S&W revolvers to work with factory grips is out of touch with the reality of most of S&W's history. BTW, Colts aren't noticeably better, and usually need about the same cure. I think that many later Rugers may be better, but I don't have much experience with them.

P.S. In the sixties, I used to eyeball cops' guns, which were revolvers back then, mostly S&W. If I saw a grip adapter or aftermarket grips, I figured he knew something about guns. If I didn't, I figured he didn't. I was probably right. Any old-time LEOs care to comment?

You know I kind of resemble the OP's remark. It's not the years that hurt it's the miles on a rough road that tear things up. Life is what it is. I carry a revolver now because that's what works best for me. I'd prefer a 1911 platform and absolutely love 1st generation Smith autos but it's not feasible. I'm not going to use a system that I can't make work reliably anymore. I'm 58 and that's not old, now 95 that's old. From what I've been reading I'm in some mighty fine company. It's too bad we can't all get together and have our own Camp Perry gathering like Range session and pot luck.

I'm 41 and carry a revolver every day, on and off the job. I grew up shooting revolvers, I have confidence in them and in my ability to use them. When the county hired me in '97 I bought a brand new 19-7. Since then I've carried a variety of .38 and .357 revolvers by S&W, Ruger and Colt. Even when I carried a 1911 there was a .38 as a back up. I don't have any objections to automatics, I own several, but I prefer to carry a revolver (or two).

By the way, I don't think 41 is old, but I have noticed a disturbing increase in younger people using "sir" or "mister" when talking to me. At least no one has asked me if I'm the original owner of my Model A (yet).

I carry several different pistols depending upon the situation and clothing.
Some of my repeat favorites are Colt Defender, Colt Lt.Wt. Commander, XD9SC, S&W 6906, and a few various 2" revolvers.

The thing is, while I would like to carry my CZ 75B Stainless full time for not other reason than that it has 19 rounds on board, it's heave and a bit too big for most situations.
So in the end, I have to confess that the two pistols I carry most often are a 642, specifically because it's light, and an LCP, also because it's light.
Neither of those pistols are optimum for a situation where a "belligerent defense" if called for, but their light weight means that I fulfil the cliche' that "it's better to carry anything than to carry nothing at all".

So yea, a 642 is usually what I bring along in a Don Hume J.I.T. holster pretty much anywhere.
These days with the terrorist **** going on, however, I'm thinking that I will start carrying the Lt.Wt. Commander more often. Still light, but not as featherweight as the 642, and I get to bring 8 onboard instead of just 5.

Chalk one up for grandma. The three inch 686 plus is my favorite carry. It's my go-to for woods/rural carry and when the weather is cold enough in SC for a cover garment, or occasional purse carry year-round. The Shield and Sig P238 share carry duty, but the L-frame instills the greatest confidence.

One of the reasons I like "here" is that I'm NOT the designated old fart anymore.

I like revolvers. Yes, all the things said about J Frames, they are specialized tools for specialized roles. That's why I prefer to carry 2in RB K Frames. Yes I also carry semiautos (and one of each). I also get ribbing from the whippersnapers because I like single stack DA/SA guns made from metal.

But some things must be genetic, because my 19yo daughter prefers S&W revolvers.

Depends on the hands of the shooter. Target grips fit me better than Magna grips. Tyler T Grips never did anything for me. Truth be told, a pair of Pachmayr Gripper grips was the first thing out on 90% of K frames when I was in the job.

But a j frame is an up close gun, and skinny factory grips are the best for not gripping your shirt. At 10-12 feet that they are generally used at, the wood grips are fine. Yeah, I shot better with the pachmayrs, but at 10 feet it never mattered.

I'm 53 and EDC a 6+1 plastic fantastic 380 on the drive to & from work & around the house.
Carry a K-frame 357 on the weekends and when going to places where larger numbers of people gather.

And I still have one piece of clothing I got in high school - a RUSH concert shirt from 1979...

I'm 26 and I carry a revolver everday, sometimes two. Usually a model 49 bodyguard or my 4" model 10-5 with a bobbed hammer. Very occasionally a model 57-1, however that one is hard to hide in warmer weather. I would agree though that those who do carry in my generation and younger are almost all using plastic pistols. It's sad that most of the mainstream "youth" in my generation are actually just plain anti anything gun related. Unless of course some dumb (c)rap song mentions one...

Meanwhile at 520Fan's last paragraph, LEO with S&W Target grips also given presumption of probably being reasonably competent.

Young (mid-twenties) female relative: started with a single-line .38 M&P and now a 638. She had her choice of about anything and tried many of them. She's really smart and her choices show it.

Maybe it explains why they've made it to "Old age".
There might be a lesson there.

I'm older than some, 68, and love revolvers. I even strap on a single action once in a while. But with these poor eyes and tri-focals, I carry a full size M&P auto. Hopefully with the extra ammo load I'll eventually either hit or scare off my attacker. But I love those revolvers!!

I'm 23 and carry a 4" model 19 made in 1971 most of the time. Had a glock 21, didn't care for it much. My first pistol I bought, a 1911 sits in its box most of the time haha. I've got 3 revolvers right now, adding a j frame to the mix soon. I love revolvers haha

I carry both now. For 48 years I've carried a revolver (except when my superiors made me carry something longer and heavier)...and I'm 63.
And you're only as old as who you feel

Have both, carry both, although not at the same time. Since most SD encounters are point blank to ten feet, I don't feel intimidated carrying my Model 49 J frame, or overly empowered with my full size M&P. If it ever comes down to crunch time, (God forbid), it'll be up to me to perform. The tool at my disposal will only be as good as I am.

Depending on the weather you could say I'm pushing 70 or dragging 60.

But I'm still "On the Job" carrying a high cap 9mm backed up by the ubiquitous .38 spl. M-642.

At 66 I'm still considered a child by some here. Childish by all others for sure! Yeah, I carry a revolver, 2" S&W 13-1, or a Ruger SP101 2.25". I promise to grow up next year.

That is an extremely broad statement, now isn't it. Indeed, as has been stated, it really does change man to man, hand to hand, and perhaps even shooting style to shooting style. Of the grips I've tried for my Model 10's, the old wooden stock service grips have served me by far the best. For N frame, the old style target wood grips are great, and my daily carry pistol, an M27, I use a wooden standard service grip, because that's what works well for me. Although i will admit, the new style wooden target grips that came with it were worthless to me.

Some people find "stock" general issue settings to be fine, if not in some cases work the best. Not everyone demands exacting custom work be done to make a firearm work well, not everyone goes through endless toil trying to get the perfect grip or fit. Some people can pull a gun off the rack and use it just fine. Some people don't feel the need, or actually need, custom grips or any extras.

I think there is a general attitude in many shooters overall, and in fact in many other hobbies/fields, that you aren't "serious" unless you customize every last bit of every gun/whatever else it is you have. You CAN'T shoot rifle without buying expensive custom triggers, stocks, and attach every single item built for your gun on the fancy rail set. A 12 gauge shotgun won't work for self defense UNLESS you buy a special 18 inch barrel, a new "tactical" stock, rails, lights, rangefinders, ect.. If you own a pistol, there better well be replaced sights, custom grips, lazers, ect. Considering not everyone shoots match or buys into the effectiveness of a lot of these things, or can't afford fancy custom parts, or whatever the reason they keep a gun stock, its a bad general idea to run with.

I've met kids with super fancy assault rifles with all the fancy extras, all custom done, who couldn't shoot worth a thing. They had fun and enjoyed it, but they never really learned proficiency. There are a lot of people out there who own high grade stuff they never use, buy expensive guns and rarely shoot them, own expensive power saws and wood working equipment that sits in the store box and never gets used. I've seen some pretty serious people who can show up with a beat up old gun with stock iron sights or a cheap scope who can shoot well and have fun; even if they don't win they take shooting seriously and learn a lot, and are proficient.

I have never judged a man by his weapon choice or extras, because its a hollow assumption, a prejudice.

Well.... let me see........... I am old enough to want to get older... and wise enough to carry a defensive hand gun that will assist me in doing just that. I have a few bottom feeders and more revolvers. The auto's have at one time or the other failed to feed or failed to eject or failed to fire... even had a magazine floor plate fall off during a rapid fire drill.
Now as I recall I have never had a malfunction of any kind with my revolvers.... so as I see it.... the older I get... the older I want to get.

Carry what you will.... and maybe hold your water and maybe learn something from one of us " old guys".

The only thing needed for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.......forgot who said that.... getting old I guess.

I'm only 24 and have been carrying either a 342 or mod 60 everyday since I started carrying about 2 years ago. Revolvers just seem right to me.

I am not even 40 yet and I have carried more cylinder thingie guns in my time than those pistols with that little box that goes in the grip.

Who are you calling' old, son? I'm just shy of 60, retired police lieutenant after 37 years, been retired a year and a half. I hobble around on one arthritic knee that needs replaced and one arthritic lower leg and ankle that was broken almost 40 years ago. I've had LASIX and have one eye set for distance and one set for close up, which really screws up my dominant eye when sighting, but I still manage to qualify in the high 90's to 100% (depending on gun).

So, am I old? Yep. Do I carry revolvers only? Nope, but quite often I carry a 340 M&P or 640. My other carry guns are a Combat Commander in .45ACP, a Glock 19, and most usually a 9mm Shield. When I carry a semi-auto edc, it's not a surprise to anyone. but I do love my revolvers.

I'm 67 and I carry a chief special working around the farm, with a marlin lever .22 magnum rifle in the seat of my truck. Going out with the wife I carry my Colt 1911. Both reliable firearms. Don't like to crawl around the barns and equipment with a 1000+ dollar gun.

I'm past 70 and recently upgraded to carrying a 3" 629. It's a "geezer" thing. If I'm getting too slow for a double tap, make one do the job of two, LOL.

Old enough to recently get my Medicare card. EDC is a S&W J frame in the front pocket. Has been a J frame for years. If I feel the need for something with more rounds, it is a S&W third generation 9mm.

I'm 48, I carried a 342 for many years. For the last 5 or so it's been a Kimber CDP. I still carry a 638 pretty frequently. I just picked up a Colt GCC and am amazed at how easy it is to carry.

Thumbs up The times they are a changin

I am 65 and carry revolvers round out here in the boonies. A lot of the time since all the violence lately, I carry my old Colt 1911 with a couple of extra mags. I don't worry about the reliability of any of them. I like that .45 round and am a much better shot with it than my M37 or M65. I love them all the same and I don't play favorites. I kinda like this guys carry technique.
Peace,
gordon

Old is not a disability. Young and dead is happening all to often. Respect seems to be in short supply these days. The right tool in the hands of an experienced adult with good judgement will never be questioned by me.

At 18 I bought my first gun as an adult. It was a S&W 66-2. In Texas, we did not have CHL yet, so it rode around with me in the truck (mostly legal in some places). Fast forward a few years...I began to carry a 640-1 and a Sig P series full/mid size (legally of course). If I just had one gun, it was likely a J frame, or maybe a N frame out hunting with a long gun.

Am I old? not by my standards...I have a few gray hairs now, but don't mistake age for disability.....an old guy will kill you faster than a young one

I'm 62 and if I could have only one type of handgun I'd keep my 7 SA revolvers.

57 years old. Carried revolvers per policy from '81 to '89 on duty until I was issued a Glock 17. My off duty carry is still Glocks on the badge and any of several snub and service size .38 revolvers on my CWP.
I guess I go both ways...

After this latest bit of subhuman savagery (no doubt to be followed by more in the near future), I've decided to switch from my Smith 36 to my 3.5" M1911, or at least to BOTH when in the car.

If something happens in my immediate vicinity, I have not the SLIGHTEST intention of running away, so I'm switching to something more amenable to dealing with multiple adversaries. In addition, the winter weather now makes it more convenient for me to carry in a way other than in pocket. I never wear untucked shirts, but sweaters are another matter.

Changing times require changing tactics.

Agreed

My EDC is a Ruger LCR .357

Recent events have me leaning to my MP .40 with 15 shot capacity

Winter enables easier concealment

My fear is the events in San Bernadino are sadly only the beginning.

Age: 46

Be vigilant.

I hate like Hell reading on the forum about decrepit "old folks"... who, in fact, are 3, 4, 5 to as much as 10 years younger than me.

Man, does that ever make me feel old.

Yep. Lots of folks at my place had the S&W target grips on their revolvers back in the day. I always preferred the Magna stocks with a Tyler-T-grip. The various Pachmayr and Rogers grips were popular as well.

Just went to my first CCW class yesterday, although I have been carrying CCW for more than 50 years. I am in my "mid 70s" and always carried under retired LEOSA, but I got tired of paying the background check fee on every new gun, so I'm getting the state permit that makes that un-necessary.
Anyway, the class was a large one of more than 35 people (well supervised by 5 instructors) and consisted of folks my age or younger, but I was the ONLY one with a revolver. Makes me fell older than I already am.

I'm a 70 year old grumpy Mick and don't give a hoot what the young pukes carry (that would be anybody born after JFK passed). Just remember that the old guys don't have the stamina anymore so they have to shoot fast. Best leave us be.

I'm 65 and at present have a dozen handguns. Every one of them is a revolver in chamberings of 22LR, 22Mag, 38Special, 357Mag, & 41Mag. Been carrying since 1971. Have owned semi-autos in 380 & 9mm simply don't care for them.

Please tell me the story behind this intriguing revolver. Was this originally a model 27, but then you put a model 24 barrel on it and swapped the Cylinder as well?
