Over the last 10 years or so while actively running a holster making business my experience was that about 62% of all new holster orders were for revolvers (nearly 1/3 of all new orders were for J-frame S&W's).

Of course, I have now been retired for about two weeks so these numbers may have changed while I haven't been watching.

Please define old.

I think I'm old until I run into a fossil or two.

P.S. I carry either on any given occasion. Sometimes one of each.

I'm 35 almost 36. Always carry a wheel gun. I only own one auto pistol. And have many revolvers. Some ruger. Some S&W. Never carried an auto. Am I old? Depends I guess. If your 18. I'm old. If your 60 plus. I'm a kid. I carry a 629 everyday. Not my glock. It just fun to shoot 33 round magazine sometimes.

At 69 that pretty much defines me, especially a revolver as my EDC, but lately my EDC has been my M&P .380. It's small, light and accurate and has made me a bit lazy w/the convenience of it.

2/27/17 UPDATE: Turned 70 late last year and I've returned to carrying a J frame. Every sub compact .380 I've owned fails sooner or later. The M&P developed light strikes so I got rid of it (full disclosure @ a big loss) and got the LCP for $199 from Gander Mountain. Ran fine for awhile but found it would stovepipe or fail to eject after about 60 rounds at the range. To date I've tried almost every subcompact .380 and found their reliability not where I need it to be for a self defense gun. Got my 340 M&P out of the safe and am now carrying that.

Sadly, it seems that most of the younger generation ( I checked your profile and you ain't one of them) gravitate to the soulless foreign invaders instead of a quality firearm. By the time they figure it out they are they have become one of us "elderly gentlemen". Learnin' takes more time for some of us than others.

I'm old (70) and I'm not ashamed to carry an auto, when I think that it is appropriate. Of course, I back it up with a revolver.

I think that the reliability gap between revolvers and autos has narrowed a bit, which would probably increase the carry of autos slightly, and there are probably more new autos than new revolvers, which influences folks young enough to be wowed by the gun rags.

I feel that the biggest difference between round guns and slab-side guns is still the complexity and relative safety of handling, especially loading and unloading. Some folks have to carry a gun for a while before they realize that it can sometimes be a close call whether animals outside the family are more of a danger than the guy who thinks he's protecting himself by handling a gun every day. Depending on your handling routine, the safety differences between revolver and auto may be enormous. Some people don't realize this until their later years.

I expect to see revolvers in old people's hands for quite some time yet.

Well let's see now. I'm wearing progressive glasses, I'm hobbling and gimpy and I've been told that I have an "interesting" sense of humor.

My only convenient carry method given my work situation is pocket carry. My 2" Smith 36-"no-dash" is the only firearm I have that's appropriate for that.

I carry all kinds of stuff........Depends on the mood.....But mostly a S&W 642.........If had to go in harms way what I would carry would be my short barrel Browning A5 with a pocket full of 00 Buckshot.....I'm 61.

It's funny you say that. I've owned a few snubs. A 642, a 36, and a Ruger SPNY. A friend of mine carries a Chief Special from 1956 and he's not all that great in gun maintenance and I couldn't stand to see the old girl get any worse so I gave it a detailed cleaning and got rid of some rust. As I was doing it I realized how much I missed a J frame so I'm looking for either a 36 or a 60.

But the reason I stopped carrying a revolver was because of the lack of a manual safety. My son was 3 when I had he 36 and he asked to see my 36 as I was putting in in the safe. I'm in the "take the curiosity out of the gun" camp so I unloaded it and gave it to him cylinder open. He took it, closed the cylinder, cocked the hammer, and pulled the trigger. Then he said "I killed the dinosaur".

Now, I never taught him any of that. Probably learned it watching tv or something. But it freaked me out so I sold the gun and switched to a Ruger lc9 and then to an lc9-s. I like the manual safety and may disconnect. I just can't get the feeling that if I had a one second brain fart (I'm fanatical about locking up my guns), that either of my children could too easily operate a revolver. To a competent person, they are generally safer, being able to see the rounds in the cylinder and making the gun safe by opening it. But to a child, they are too intuitive.

I don't consider 51 particularly old . . .

I am 58, and 8 years disabled due to an inattentive motorist. If I am in a legal zone to carry that isn't volatile, I will carry my Chief's Target Special. However, if I am traveling a long distance and driving along a legal carry route, I will be carrying a semi-auto or possibly my Trooper.

Mid 50s... I started out with semis (Glocks), and then got an S&W revolver for the range... and then another. The revolvers simply started taking over most of my range time being more accurate and more fun to shoot (for me anyways). Now carrying a 638 with semis in the safe .

Who you calling old? I still think young, even though my body doesn't act young. Started out with a K frame .38, still have a wheel gun by the bed, and a couple of the "plastic guns" that you children rave about. I probably have socks older than you. :-) No offense taken, just jerking your chain.

I have a M36 and an M37, but recently bought this. It's a Model 640-1 Pro Series. .357 magnum with tritium sights.

The older J frames are now semi-retired, and this new one travels everywhere.

I think alot of our comfort is found in what we learned to shoot when we were young. Older folks would be more likely to have learned on a wheelgun. Alot of younger folks have never fired one. I've had more than one shooter at the range fire a revolver for the first time because I offered.

Well, I'm old...70, but still teaching. One of the classes that I teach is "Firearms", a course in our Criminal Justice program. While I'm old(er), my students are young(er) (18-30 mostly). Many are planning on law enforcement careers, some are already working in the field. I personally mostly carry some variety of J frame, or Colt D frame, but have lots of semi auto choices... Kimber Ultra CDP II, Glock 23, Walther PPK, etc.

But... I'm surprised how many younger folks choose to carry a small revolver, such as I would choose. For the last few months I've been carrying a S&W 340 PD. It is not unusual for younger, well trained folks to carry a revolver. Many have both.

I guess not. I'm only 60, and I carry one every day.

40 here. When I pocket carry, which is most of the time, I carry a concealed hammer revolver. But if I'm going to put up with the hassle of something bigger it's always a modern auto.

At the risk of sounding like my father use to, I think getting old brings some level of wisdom and patience with the resulting ability to resist chasing the next shinny thing that comes along.

ps. At 57, I prefer a revolver for carry because I know it's going to go BANG every time I pull the trigger. Not sure that's wisdom or a deeply rooted self preservation instinct. :-)

I agree - I carry an automatic when I think it's appropriate and I always carry a revolver in my car. if I carry an auto shooter it's going to usually be high capacity which means I'm somewhere that if the nasty hits the whirling blades I'm prepared. I'm not talking about bad places. I'm talking about likely soft targets of opportunity.

EDC normally is a 642.

I'm thirty eight and have been carrying wheelies for a couple years. I still carry autos on occasion and will do so on a more regular basis once I get one of a more reasonable size and weight, but I always have a revolver on me at least as a backup.

I'm 57 on Friday and in the past have carried a Colt 70 series 1911, a SIG P6 and a SIG P229, but now that my brain has finally gelled, my EDC is carry a Colt Lawman snubby .357. The Mrs. carries a S&W 640 .357 in a DeSantis forward cant holster... I'm a supporter of the KISS mindset. Revolvers (-almost-) ALWAYS do what they're supposed to. If they don't its 99% of the time because somebody did an action "job" on them. Or... its a new S&W.... Yes, I have the sick sense of humor. DOH!

I don't know about old guys, I'm only 78.

I no longer own an automatic, haven't for some years. I have nothing at all against them, I just trust my increasingly stiff and clumsy hands better with a DA revolver. And I've always loved them, despite owning a number of autoloaders I liked very well.

Daily carry is a DAO J-frame in .38 Special.

If I had grown up shooting high capacity, light weight, plastic autos, there'd be no way you could talk me into carrying a gun that weighs almost twice as much, and carries less than half the ammo.

But I didn't. I'm 56, and I grew up shooting revolvers, mostly, and being taught that if you do it correctly, you should have 5 shots left when you're done. And, I like knowing I'm carrying something that's true quality. Plastic just doesn't say "quality" like a well-made revolver.

I do carry an auto, occasionally, but it's old school, too, a Model 39.

I will admit, though, that when I shoot my friend's Glock, I always wonder why I don't have one yet. It would be a tucked away, emergency survival tool, not to be carried on a daily basis. I still haven't forced myself to part with the money for one of those, though. Apparently, I don't want one bad enough.

I have jackets older than you are so you are not old.. I carry both semi and revolvers but for the most part the 642.. I also carry with standard pressure rounds. I do however carry a high capacity semi if I'm traveling somewhere where the possibility that I might need it is greater. For everyday carry I carry one of the j frames for weight and because I'm 67 and grew up with a K frame 4" 38. How do you like the ruger revolvers by the way?? Thanks

I'm 64, and I grew up shooting both handgun types. I duty carried a Sig for 20 years of my LE career. Nowadays, I vary my EDC between a subcompact 9mm and a J frame .38 Special. I carry a M66 or 686 in the woods. My bedside HD pistol is a Glock 19. I like having the ability to choose the right tool for the job, but if I had to choose between my semi-autos or revolvers, I'd have to stick with the wheel guns. I guess it has a lot to do with nostalgia.

Well...my sense of humor is, the old jokes were the best ones, so I still use them.

I used the ole model 10. A gun with a round cylinder still works the best. (for me). Now a Model 65-3-3"...(A little more umph). I recon if I can't eliminate a threat(s) with 6 or less, then I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now I do have a .45 ACP with 13 opportunities, but that I use for making big holes in the milk jugs. It's just a little too big to carry around. It'd be sort of like a big ole wart on the end of my nose. It would sure stick out, and I think folks would notice I've got it.

Now when it comes to the younger set, who like their guns to come with those bottom feeding bullets. that's ok.

But sometime along the way, I think the old German saying "Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart" just might one day enlighten some of those flat shooters to change to a good ole reliable gun with a rotating cylinder.

As far as my age goes....No increase in the Soc. Sec check next year.

I'm 41 and my EDC is a J frame, and has been for many years.

Well, at this stage in our lives we have the time and are more likely to have the money. Also a lot of us came of age in a time when revolvers were king and that's just what we are most familiar with.

I have no problem with autos, and for carrying I prefer them. But when I go to the range it's revolvers, and the drawer gun is a revovler.

I'm 49 and carry an M&P 9c as my EDC, prior to that it was a 3906, in some situations I will tote a 637 in my pocket.

During my career, my opinion was "Real Cops"carry revolvers.
Now my opinion is "Real Men" carry revolvers.

Well I'm 36, going on 5! I carry and prefer semi auto, mag fed handguns. I have a few revolvers too. Several J frames, several K frames and a N frame. Wouldn't even mind another 357 N frame in 4 in barrel but when it comes to carry and defense I'm all about the semi autos and leave you guys to worry about all that soul stuff. They are all strictly utilitarian to me.

I find J frames to be probably the most uncomfortable guns to shoot. Not from the recoil perspective but from their small grip size and short distance from the grip to the trigger. It just doesn't work for me. I need something to take up all that space in my grip. But this is the,same problem with tinny tiny pocket autos. Even 1911s and 3rd gen S&W with the plastic pannels I find a little to thin.

K frames with Hogue grips work good but then I'm carrying double the weight with 1/2 the ammo.

I do use J frames for carry but only when I need something absolutely small and discreet and clothing would otherwise prohibit a FS or compact semi auto.

My dad wanted a little revolver to carry but he's not a gun guy so I know for a fact that practice would be zero. I kept trying to make him understand that a J frame is hard to shoot and practice is a must. I finally got him to the range and boy was I sorry!. First, he brought his coffee cup. There is no table to put that on except the little shelf in front of you where all the ammo and targets are. Second, when he got to shoot he immediately took the dueling position. ...fail! And finally. ..third, at 5 yards he gave the target a lot of laud warning shots! No J frame for him (soup nazi voice)!

I'm guessing age is not always a factor. Personal preference.

I'm firmly grounded in the 20th Century......... around town a 3913 or 6906.....bumming in Penn's Woods...... a wheelgun......3" 66 or a 3" 60-10.

I didn't think I was older, just smarter.

Only us old guys are WISE ENOUGH to carry revolvers.
