You are right, he didn't mention spare magazines. Perhaps he was just trying to make the point about gun selection priorities.

Harkrader, back when we were all carrying revolvers, I put on a training exercise for our sheriff's office. We went to the local National Guard Armory range (in the basement), and fired both duty and off-duty/backup weapons. The last course of fire was 2 rounds. (You know, 50 round boxes of ammo and 6 shot revolvers.) From 7 yards, with the last 6 empties still in the chamber, get a good stance with the gun on the target. Tell me when you feel comfortable. At that time I turned off the lights (it is now DARK). You empty the fired cases, load your last two, and fire both at the target. (I had night vision goggles with an IR emitter, so I could see and make sure we had no safety problems.) LOTS of bang, click, click, click, click, bang. Some 4 clicks and two bangs, some 2 bangs. S&W rotate counter-clockwise, Colts rotate backward. If you are going to carry two revolvers, carrying two of the same make eliminates a difference that is easy to forget when the adrenaline is high.
That said, looks good, and is certainly better than carrying half-a-dozen .25 autos.

If not a true pair at least carry a composed pair. To do otherwise is a gauche way of going armed. Larry

And what happens when you need to take your jacket off?

I'm not knocking your set up, but for me the KISS method is best. One revolver on my strong side, IWB with speed strips. Simple, effective if needed, not flashy and the best option for me year round. No thinking, draw squeeze and the trigger and that's it.

Agree I believe like you he was making a point on gun selection, but carrying addition rounds in spare magazines is a valid point when carrying a sub-compact that may have as little as 6-8 rounds according to the caliber of the weapon !!

Some of his videos are quite comical .. and thank many after seeing them might not take him as serious as they should ..

this is what I look at when I'm picking a carry gun

Simplicity. Number one, if you ever have to use that gun it's going to be under the most stressful conditions you've ever had to face and it will probably be over in less time than it took you to read this paragraph so if you make any mistakes you probably won't have time to correct them.

I don't carry guns with manual safeties and I sure as hell wouldn't carry an M9 or any other gun where the safety functions as a decocker as well. I've seen to many people on a square range forget to flip the safety off to trust one in a real fight.

Size. No pocket rockets unless I have no other option. I want something I can actually get a grip on and something where the size isn't going to exacerbate the felt recoil. That said I won't lug around CZ97B either. I'd go mid sized nothing smaller than a Glock 26 nothing bigger than a 1911 (and probably not that big)

Size/Sight radius. No 2 inch barrels

Capacity.

In general I agree with this guy's conclusions I just happen to be one of those people who can carry a full sized handgun with out a problem so I do. In Colorado the biggest capacity magazine you can carry is 15 rounds so I'd be looking at a DAO Third Gen Smith or a Glock 19 or similar.

Caliber. Pick what is easily accessible and works for you. I wouldn't recommend a high pressure round to a new shooter and I wouldn't buy a subcompact anything in .40 S&W or.357 SIG unless I could shoot it first.

Replaceablity. If you ever use that 2500.00$ Custom Nighthawk it is going to disappear into the police evidence locker and you will likely never see it again. If that happens to your 300.00$ beater Glock.... So what?

So that's what I look at when choosing a carry gun.

I agree with the first point in the video. Will you carry it? I have a full sized.45. It shoots great. It feels really good in hand. It holds 12+1. But, its heavy. Its bulky. It takes a shoulder holster to carry. In cold weather that is OK. In warm weather, or lighter clothing, I carry the Shield.

I confess that I didn't watch the video initially because I got distracted by the fella' with those big pistols on his side. Finally got around to it this morning. Pretty solid advice, as far as I'm concerned.

That was my feeling as well. Some people may not like his style or his personality, but that has nothing to do with the validity of the advice.

So, Getting back to the "Spare Magazines" issue, let me ask you folks how you carry spare magazines?
I am new to the whole CCW thing.I am taking as much training and reading everything I can get my hands on to be prepared for when I get my CCW permit, but I'm thinking about this issue. I bought a 9MM Shield and plan to carry it IWB. Is it OK to carry spare Mags just in a pocket?
I'm thinking, putting them in a waist band pouch would kind of defeat the purpose of the CCW, right?
Your thoughts?

You don't want to just stick them in a pocket because you can get foreign objects in the magazine.

The make magazine pouches that fit in the pocket or you can carry them in a different type of pouch. I carry the spare magazine for my 9C in a Gerber Multitool pouch. People don't even notice.

As you're about to find out, some people here carry more reloads than a street cop. Others just carry a pistol. Some carry mags or speed strips in a pocket, some use a mag holder of sorts, some come close to wearing a duty belt with knives, lights, tasers, and batons. Others carry an extra gun for a New York reload. You do what works for you. Look at everything, try stuff out, and find your fit. . .

I've carried 45acp 1911's for the last 20 years. I shoot them very well, I will carry them (Commander size guns), and I carry 1 or 2 spare mags. I have never felt under gunned, never. I have degenerative disc disease in my back, it's very painful at times. The 1911's are too much weight for those times. So I bought a Shield 9mm about a year and a half ago. I love it and I'm not a 9mm fan. After some Apex mods, it now has a 4lb 4oz trigger, less take up and over travel. It's very accurate, soft shooting, and just fun to shoot. I also bought one with the thumb safety. It's not a problem for me considering all the training on my 1911s!! I don't feel under gunned with it either. I carry one or two 8 round mags with it also. So when my back is having problems it's the Shield or nothing. Nothing is not an option IMO!!
