Default Continuing Education

I'm pretty excited about this, and would like to pass this on as a recommendation.

I have taken a couple of courses in pursuance of my CCW. I am scheduled to take another in less than two weeks. Just today, I was notified by my range of another course offering that I jumped on and registered for.

This is a two-pronged course. The first is "Violence Dynamics" followed by "Active Shooter Training." Taking the first is a requirement for taking the second.

My recommendation is this: Continue to get educated. I hope to never have to use my gun for anything more than punching paper. But I want to be as smart, alert, trained and capable as I can should the need arise.

I know there are veterans here who have decades of carry experience. My recommendation is more for those like myself, who are new to the world of firearms. Next to raising a family, I consider owning a lethal weapon the most responsible task I have undertaken.

Sounds like you don't have your concealed carry license yet?

You are definitely thinking along the right lines with regard to continuing training. My only disagreement is with the sequence of priority on the classes you mention. For example, I would recommend an advanced pistol course that includes proper drawing technique, drawing from concealment, trigger management, handling failures, and tactical movement, etc... FIRST. Next would be a "force on force"(shoot-don't shoot) class, followed by a course on "Home Defense" and then "Handgun use in and around the car" (you are more likely to encounter a carjacking attempt than an active shooter). Last would be "Active Shooter".

Keep in mind that ALL of those skills should be augmented with some basics on Close Quarters Combat (CQB), as most encounters outside the home occur at or near arms length, and may require you to ward off an attacker in order to bring your gun into the fight. Some people due to advanced age or disability are handicapped in this area, but if YOU aren't I would HIGHLY recommend making it a priority. After all....what will you do if attacked in a area where ccw is not allowed?

Depending on what's available where you are, it may be well worth checking the non-credit courses available through your local community college system. For example, the comm. coll. here offers several basic NRA pistol, self defense, and home defense courses, as well as occasional things like 8 hrs of tactical shotgun.
And, for those of us who are, uh..., chronologically advantaged, there are tuition waivers.

Good thoughts and advice, thanks! I turned 64 a couple of months ago, and up until a year ago, was a regular distance runner. That suggests that I'm in pretty good shape, but not a hulk. I hurt my knee (torn meniscus) and that has hampered my running considerably. My biggest drawback is my vision, though. Like many others, I have presbyopia, which makes it hard to focus on the pistol's front sight. I have new prescription glasses, which are progressive lenses, and am learning to shoot without tilting my head back to focus through them.

Protected One, thanks for your suggestions. You are correct in that I don't have my CCW, yet. I have all of the course certs and documents required, but have been traveling, so until I return, won't be able to go to the courthouse with application in hand.

But as I hinted in my OP, my CC education doesn't stop with me getting the permit, it starts it!

For the past 4 years, I have attended at least one CC course every year.
Keeps me up to date and also proves if I should be involved in any self defense occurance, of my commitment to proper self defense training.
