Default Suggested reading for introducing someone to armed home defense?

A family member has expressed to me sincere interest in learning the ins-and-outs of firearm ownership for home defense. Total beginner.

I am a deep well of valuable but highly disorganized knowledge picked up piecemeal over the years and am finding trying to give a salient, concise primer challenging.

Before getting into the nuts-and-bolts of proper care, feeding and running of a firearm and which one will serve them best, I want to address the broader mindset issues -- particularly the personal and legal considerations of armed home defense.

I'm thinking of starting them with a copy of Ayoob's In the Gravest Extreme, which I find to be good albeit dated in some ways.

Can anyone suggest something similar or better -- books, articles, websites or threads for a short, simple, solid introduction to the field?

Haven't seen anything better than Ayoob's book. Theoretically, it seems hard to believe that there is anything that can't be improved, except maybe a P-38 (the can opener, not the pistol), but in practice, it may not be worth the effort.

Why not get him or her that book, and then add to it as the opportunities present themselves?

Is there a consolidated form of the armed defense blurbs in American Rifleman? These are wonderful food for thought. Not much detail into "how", they're more at the "what" level.

A copy of "Dial 911 and Die" is definitely reinforcement as to why you're protecting YOURSELF in the first place. If you don't, it's unlikely anyone else will.

The "I Was There" section in "Combat Handguns" is equally valuable, and usually with a lot more detail.

I would suggest a concealed handgun permit type of training course, as that would cover all State and local laws as well as federal.

The firearms hands on training you can help with.

Massad Ayoob is the most erudite and articulate voice on matters of both tactics AND the legal labyrinth of armed self defense. Here are links to some great videos:

Check the NRA website to find Basic Pistol classes in your area. Basic Pistol is usually a prerequisite for the Basic Personal Protection in the Home class. The two classes together while somewhat costly are better than just reading about it.

Default suggested reading

Get "Personal Protection in the Home" from the NRA. Paper back manual. Only about $20. Well organized. You can explain much of it for them.

Ayoob's "In the Gravest Extreme" should be required reading for everyone who owns a firearm.
