Do you carry a gun while fishing?
Anyone carry a gun while fishing?, just asking because a friend of mine had some problems with rift rafts but nothing serious. Got me thinking about it, you're out fishing in a secluded spot, what if you come across some unwanted visitors. Came across this subject here - Fishing with guns

We do a little "pond fishing" (private pond/catch and release) at our place in the Laural Highlands of Pa.... 2 acre pond straddles the property line with a neighbor.......lots of ATV traffic on a road that passes by the pond ..... and folks looking for my neighbor at his "camp"
Generally carry a 3" 66 or my 3" 60-10 (.357) whenever I'm out and about in Penn's Woods...................

FISHING
Well I always have, but the problems I have had down through the years, and I haven't fished for some time now, were not of the two legged variety. Even so, one should be very careful before showing a firearm in such as case. The law frowns on branshing. That being said, one should think twice or more, before a shooting. Harassment, in my book does not qualify-- there are of course fine lines here, and my judgement is just for me. Others I am sure have their own. I can only relate one time when I had a problem of this sort--I was done fishing, my buddy was still trying his luck. I was doing some target shooting with my 45 and all of a sudden I heard someone shout from off to my left 'don't shoot my dog' The guy kept yelling this and soon arrive shouting this over and over. I holster my gun and was quick to explain I was target shooting and had not seen his dog. We have a real problem with packs of feral dogs around here, one 85 year old lady was killed some years back while attending her garden. Anyway, the guy calmed down and went on his way.

Back in SC there tended to be alligators in shallow bodies of water. In the ocean, there was always the chance of sharks. There were also large water snakes, and although not officially recognized, feral pythons or whatever they were just like down in Florida. To say nothing of the feral pigs, feral dogs, cannibalistic hobos, and what not else.
Here you will find that bears like fish too. I don't know if the big kitties and wolves eat fish. Probably. Dogs and regular cats will eat fish.
There are also snakes here.
For a long time there was a classic sub type of gun known as the tackle box gun.

I carry everywhere legal including while fishing, I would guess if I had to draw my weapon while fishing it would be for a 4 legged pest but we do have quite a few meth cookers in this part of the country so you never know who you might meet up with out in the wilds.

Always. Usually a pair of Airweight J-frame revolvers, or at a minimum, a .22LR semiauto or revolver.

Dang J.R. was that up in Virginia? I had no idea gators could be up that far north.
I always carry when fishing. You just never know when you might be in danger. People can territorial anywhere, even in the woods.

Why, unless it was illegal, would you not carry under these circumstances? I'm not smart enough to predict when I may need a gun so I always carry.

On the boat my carry gun is usually in the glove box as the pirate treat on Lake Ontario is pretty remote and I feel safe that we won't be going to war with Canada too soon. Arrr or is it "eh" eh?
Trout fishing on the local streams or bass fishing the ponds and river, I absolutely carry something! The only exception to that is for some moronic reason it is illegal to carry in our county-run parks. Sadly some of those parks make for some fine fishin'!

I carry my 649-2 in my pocket everywhere I go. Am seriously thinking about an ankle holster for the now rare times I wear a suit. The two things I do not like to leave home without is my J-frame and my swiss army knife.

After watching Deliverance you wont go on any body of water or into any woods without being armed to the teeth.
I saw that in 1973, on the big screen , and it creeped me out....at that time it was unnerving !
Whenever I see Ned Beatty....guess what I think of ? " squeal for me...." I know it's just a movie, but if I was an actor I would have never taken that role.... I mean what if you got typecast !

Anytime you are in cottonmouth country... 410 derringer is especially useful. Or a 640 with 38 shot. But then I've been bitten by a copperhead and had a cousin die from a moccasin bite.

I don't fish. Nor go into the woods much any more. But I have already made the decision about being armed.

yes when fishing from shore Super Black Hawk, Vaquero or 624 all in some variation of .44.
I don't carry in the canoe though, its been a long while since I swamped a boat or fell in the drink, but none of my guns have lanyards and I am not much into snorkling.

You bet I carry when I go fishing!! Our family has had too many experiences in the outdoors not to pack a firearm while fishing!
Just to give one example, one of my sons who was about 30 years old at the time, was fly fishing a mountain stream about a mile from his truck. It was getting around dusk, so he figured he'd start wading back towards the truck, fishing as he went.
He heard some movement in the rocks on the ridge just above him, over looking the stream. There, crouched on a ledge, was a large cougar.
My son slowly started making his way upstream towards the truck, keeping his eye on the mountain lion the whole time. The cougar kept following him, still above him on the ledge. When my son would stop, the cougar would stop. When my son started moving again, the cougar would start moving.
It was almost dark by the time my son got to the truck. Just before my son arrived at his vehicle, the cougar turned and walked away.
That was the first, an only time, my son has ever been without a handgun while fishing. Foolishly (and he admits this himself), he had left his pistol under the seat of his truck thinking he wouldn't need it. He has never been without a firearm in the mountains since.
Here's a picture taken while my sons, two of my grandsons, and I were fly fishing in the Boulder Mountains of Utah. The revolver in my shoulder holster is a Ruger OMV Sheriff's model in .45 Colt. First two loads are snake shot.

I fish in a remote wilderness area which is also black bear country. I always have a .357 with me. Either my pocketed 649-3 or my Md 681 on my hip in a vintage S&W belt holster that I don't mind getting scratched by tree branches or rocks.

About 10 years or so ago, I was at a secluded lake in southern Colorado with my wife. There was only one other camp there and they didn't like us being there. Shortly after our arrival they started blasting music and then firing rounds with a .22. It was clear that they wanted to run us off. I responded by firing six rounds of 44 Mag into the hillside. The other camp, about 300 yards away, got very quiet. The 44 echoed very well through those mountains.

I don't know how things are now, but before Hurricane Ike, it was not uncommon for people to report stuff stolen/cars broken into down on the end of the Texas City Dike. Especially at night. A lot of folks like to fish at night with generators and powerful lights. Redfish, trout, drum ...lots of different fish species to be had. And some rift-raft.
Hurricane Ike wiped the dike clean and the city of Texas City has done a lot of repairs/upgrades and now charge $5 carload for access. Funny how $5 will turn some folks away, but not all.

Yep, sure do, concealed. Most of my fishing is in mountain lakes and streams of far northern California. Unfortunately, the most abundant crop in those parts of the state is illegal marijuana. So, when hiking to and from those fishing spots, you occasionally run across some folks who don't appear to be fishing.

Yes. Usually something bigger than my EDC, carried out in the open. I'll still have the EDC, of course, but it becomes my back-up.
I'm not as avid a fisherman as I once was, but I still enjoy it now and then. However, I don't fish areas with easy access, the places I like to fish have to be hiked to. There are black bear and cougar, but I'm really not as concerned about either of those as I am meth-heads.

If I'm more than half a step out my front door (to reach the mailbox) I'm carrying, and when I get the mail a gun is within very easy reach. I can't see why fishing would be different.

I always pack when fishing, we have bears, mountain lions and two legged varmints where I freshwater fish. I have to be honest though, I carry a Glock 23 and not a S&W. I drop it in a pocket of my fishing vest and then an extra magazine on the opposite side to balance it out a little.

Here in SW FL we have to deal with gators, cotton mouths, and the occasional crocodile when freshwater fishing. I have had cottons climb into the canoe; luckily I just flipped them back out with a paddle. One time I had a 12 foot gator following me who came up right beside me. I held the paddle up like I was going to whack him. He swirled, went under my canoe and came up right next to me on the other side, eyeballing me like I was a cheeseburger. I left the area post haste. Normally gators flee when they see people but when fed by dummies they lose their fear of man and become dangerous. This one was not afraid. I always carry but would only shoot as a last resort. To date I have not had to dispatch any wildlife behind the house.

Fishing is what I do and why I decided to get a permit and carry. I'm in Michigan and the best lake in my area is Muskegon about 25 miles away and I fish at night a lot. I got back to the ramp one time about 1 am and the window was smashed out of my truck. I also fish the river in Saginaw on the other side of the state and that's not a very safe town either. I also fish the Detroit river in the spring.

Yes, I have a Taurus .22 mag with a couple snake shot for snakes, and the rest of the cylinder loaded with hollow point SD ammo, for the other types of reptiles I might encounter back in the mountains trout fishing or on the river banks bass fishing. A Taurus because if it gets wet not as much heartburn if it were a S&W...

Fishing or camping/hiking, etc. in remote areas strikes me as a place to definatley carry.
You have the critters plus you are alone with no help or witnesses around to dissuade a 2 legged critter from causing mischief.
Finding a victim alone is a bad guys' dream.
