Default One in the chamber?

Just wondering the consensus on how people cc their semi's - with a round in the chamber on safety or not?

Also with a revolver - hammer on an empty chamber or not?

Thanks in advance.

One in the chamber. as you might not have time to rack the slide, or may be wrestleing and only have one hand to use. when i carry my 1911 it's cocked and locked with safety on.

Traditional DA autos- round in the chamber, safety off.

Revolvers- modern revolvers are safe to carry at full capacity.

Always one in the chamber. Safety on if single action, off if double. Most importantly, train with it in your carry condition.

An empty gun is just a club. And not a good one at that.

I don't know of ANY double action revolvers with a safety so that particular question demonstrates a lack of knowledge. Yeah, the cheap Heritage brand single action revolver features a safety but it's sold as a range toy and I rather doubt that anyone actually carries one.

I also carry with one in the chamber because that firearm is carried for protection. If I wanted to carry a club I'd look for a proper night stick because handguns just aren't a very good club, especially shorter barreled handguns.

As for my carry choice, it's an old school DA/SA semi auto because I like not having to be concerned about flipping off a safety. So, I guess you can say I am about as Politically Incorrect about carrying as is legally possible.

The only semi I carry is the M&P .380 and I've never used the safety (too difficult for a leftie) and always carry a round chambered. When we transitioned from the .38 to the Glock (no safety) our training was to always have a round chambered. I've "been there" and can guarantee you will not have time to chamber a round in an emergency, nor can you be sure to have the use of both hands when and if the time ever comes. My advise, for what it's worth, is to carry a revolver if you are not comfortable with a round chambered in your semi auto.

For anyone who wants to go to the trouble there is a lot of info on Youtube about carrying a gun w/o a round in the chamber. Very instructive.

I only have two semi's that I CC from time to time that have safeties one is my 5903 and the other is my Beretta 92fs Centurion and, when I carry them I flip the safety off so they will closely resemble my other CC pistols which have De-Cock only. Every pistol I carry has one in the pipe.

No safety. No need for one. One in the chamber. If there is not one in there may as well throw it at them.

Empty chamber is worthless; always one in the chamber regardless of what it is. If you have something unsafe for that, say an old revolver without a hammer block, then save it for a range gun and get something else.

Yes, always one in the pipe. If the semi has a safety, I'll have it on. If it does not have a slide safety, it's still got one ready to go, as the safety is your finger being where it needs to be is the best safety, and your brain making sure your finger stays honest.

I honestly don't know why someone would carry a gun that is not ready to go...? If you are new to carrying a gun, and/or shooting, and it just seems a bit scary, just be sure to put in some serious shooting practice. You'll get a lot more comfortable with things, but you need trigger time.

For anyone new to guns, they need to develop good habits on how to handle their gun (finger off trigger at all times until on target and ready to go, and always pointing the gun in a safe direction). I also make it a habit to not handle my carry guns unless necessary. Don't fiddle around with the darn thing when loaded, holstering, un-holstering, racking slides, etc., unless you are at the range practicing safely. Always check and recheck to make sure the gun is clear before handling the gun at home, in the car, etc. Drop mag, rack slide, rack slide again, check the chamber; finger not near trigger, muzzle in a safe direction! And for carry, get a good quality holster. These guns don't fire by themselves...

A little research will show this topic has been discussed many, many times.

(Of course you carry one in the chamber. If you are 'not comfortable' with that, seek coaching and practice until you are.)

Yes I do have a lack of knowledge which is why I came here and why I am asking questions!

If you prefer I not that's fine, I can go elsewhere - thought this was a friendly place to learn and offer help when I can.

Guess I was wrong

I know what you're thinking. 'Did he fire six shots or only five'? Well to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I kind of lost track myself. But being that this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well do ya, punk?

DOH..!! I carry on an empty chamber..Never mind.

Revolvers have been safe to carry fully loaded for a long time.

If you don't have one in the chamber you are carrying an unloaded gun.

Always one in the chamber or fully loaded wheel gun... I just don't understand carrying any other way...

1911 is cocked and locked. I don't carry that gun.

If you prefer I not that's fine, I can go elsewhere - thought this was a friendly place to learn and offer help when I can.

Guess I was wrong
Welcome to the Forum, don't take these galoots to heart... at least not yet.
In my view if you do not have your firearm ready to fire as soon as you clear the holster...... don't carry it till you build your faith in your abilities with your chosen weapon.
Press on Pardner..... I think you will like it here. I was new once and have learned quite a bit here.

This is, in fact, a very friendly and polite forum. Interestingly, no one called you a troll, which showed good judgment, and a further indicated what a fine and perceptive bunch of folks we have here. A few months from now, when you have caught up on your reading, you will look back back and realize this.

Your slow start is NOT abnormal - I have an in-law who is an engineer and appears to be a naturally good shot (I think that he just reads a lot and has the self-control to apply it) and he made the same error. And he's an engineer!

There's a lot of reading to be done before posting surveys. Maybe it will come across better when you have a question if you just ask it. Not sure why that is, but I believe that it is.

I vote for starting with the search function, Smoke demonstrated how effective that can be. Just looking back through the last several weeks of posts will generally produce plenty of reading on this particular subject as well.

Be proactive, read everything you can find on your question and then if you're still not sure about something by all means, ask, but doing a little homework goes a long way.

I didn't mean to sound critical, simply to point out that revolvers are an area where you may wish to do a bit of reading about. I will also admit that after taking a second look at what I posted I could have worded things a lot more diplomatically. Truth is I was in a rush to get out the door and probably should have just passed up on posting because when I'm rushed I tend to get really gruff. So, welcome to the forum and enjoy the time you spend here.
