Default Why Am I Feeling the Revolver Lust?

I have a Glock 19 set up the way I want it and very good IWB and OWB holsters. I have a Smith 65 with 3" barrel with OWB and IWB holsters. I have a LCR in .22 lr for double action practice. I had a LCR in .38 but sold it as it was too light for my taste and not really caring for the recoil due to the weight and difficult to control trigger action due to light weight. With all the great compact and subcompact semi autos in 9mm and even .380, I still feel the urge for a J frame in .357 for weight like the 640 or LCR in .357 carrying .38+P not .357-no lust for the Airweights. But why choose 5 rounds when you can have at least 7 rounds and often more with an equal or better SD round in the 9mm? The subcompacts are usually easier to shoot fast and accurately for most than the snubbie. Do I need to just take a cold shower until the urge passes or maybe seek "firearms counseling" from a specialist?

If you are thinking .357 or real hot.38 +P you are wise to go for the
slightly heavier guns than the LCR or Airweight. I would suggest the
S&W Model 60 concealed hammer or the Ruger SP101 concealed hammer.
The average self defense shooting only takes 2.7 shots, so 5 is enough in
most circumstances. I carry a speed strip with 5 more just in case.
If its a simple lust just fondle one of your other guns and maybe it will
go away. If it is approaching obsession maybe you can find a range that
sells guns and would let you try the two I mention above. I have a ton
of handguns and I prefer the Ruger SP101 (with Crimson Trace) for my
everyday carry. Good luck.

You are letting rational thoughts get in the way of another gun purchase . Find a 640/649 at a good price, try it out and you'll probably keep it.

If one knows how to shoot, 5 shots is more than enough unless you wander into a drug deal gone bad. A lot of the time I carry a 637 with 38 +P Speer short barrel. I don't feel under gunned with only 5 shots.

Yes I was thinking GD 38+P 135 gr, or hot .38+P or mild .357 like Gold Dot .357 135 gr short barrel. My concern with the LCR is the weight is only 17 oz and while the trigger pull is wonderful the trigger reset sucks. I can short stoke an LCR easily as the reset is all the way out.

Default Model 65

You already own a 3" Model 65, presumably the round butt. I have the same gun and it's a tough revolver to beat for CC. A seven round cylinder is a fat cylinder and that affects concealment.

I wasn't aware that "rational thoughts" had anything to do with it!

What are those kind of thoughts anyway?

Stopped by a LGS today. 15-2 in the used case...$399. Shooter grade. I resisted today. I've got 3 15s already, but it sure looked like it needs a home...

I have only recently ( last six months ) started carrying a revolver as my EDC. My choice: six shot LCR 327 Federal magnum. I load Federal Hydrashocks in 85 gr. and they are not punishing to me, but if you are a little recoil shy can always have the option of Hornady Critical Defense in 32 HR Magnum.....they are puppies to shoot.

The trick is to find the LCR. THey are extremely scarce, and the only one in 327 Fed. On Gunbroker Sold for $800 yesterday!

Ruger, LCR, 327 Fed Mag, NIB, 6 shot : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

no....no...no...stay with the bottom feeders, you will sleep better at night in stead of plotting your next revolver purchase. I bought a M19 snub on a lark.... I now own 4 Smiths and have a desire for more..... save your self and...... what do want for the 65?

If you must do this go for a 640, there is one for sale on this forum right now. Maybe a 639.... 60.......................................arggggh

DevilDog I paid an embarrassing sum for the 65. It was initially work over and sold through the Smith Custom Shop. The hammer is bobbed, the trigger to die for and locks up super tight. It only had a few rounds through it and came with the original box marked the Custom Shop and all papers including the warranty card that was retained by the owner. No this Smith is not for sale. It was a safe queen. I should keep it a safe queen but I'm 70 and I shoot it and carry it some. In fact I usually grab it instead of the Glock. Here are some pics Ahrends Grips

I agree. Five rounds of 38+p, any one of which deposited in center mass will cause Mr. Bad Guy to seriously rethink his career path. Unless I'm venturing way out of my usual comfort zone, my old Model 49 does quite nicely.

I have a Glock 19 and an SP101. I carry the Glock mostly and the SP101 in a jacket pocket as a second gun.

The SP is heavier yes. But it sure takes the recoil of 357 loads.

Well, if one must insist on rationality, there is the simplicity and rock-solid dependability of the revolver snd the fact that there is a lot less to go wrong with one.

But the word used was lust, right?

The 640 is a splendid carry gun. I've carried mine daily for seventeen years and trust it implicitly.

Your 3" Model 65 is a "grail gun" for lots of guys.

There has to be a reason!

If you need to go smaller, and want a .357 that's still enjoyable to shoot, look at the SP101. Not a great trigger, but not bad enough to keep me from carrying one. I don't have one at the moment, but I've had two in the past, and they are great little guns. My first wife, who liked shooting, shot one with full power loads better than any of my friends could!

You already have a fine carry revolver (65) - of those choices that's what I would have on me.

I usually do. I have a Simply Rugged holster for OWB and Remora for IWB. I think I want an additional gun, something smaller for when I want to drop it in pants with larger pockets-not skinny jeans-or IWB when wearing tighter pants-32" waist instead of the 34" specifically for IWB carry of the 65 and Glock 19. That leaves the micro .380s which are smaller than the J frames such as the LCP or the Js which are larger for pocket but more shootable. Or thin 9mm subcompacts such as the Shield. The "problem"-a great one to have-is that with the 65 and G19 I have are two of the best defensive handguns made-IMHO. And reality is I don't "need" and additional handguns, but let's not get into "need" lol. So to restate my initial comments why should I be attracted to a J frame when I could carry a Shield (or the mini .380s but that's another can of worms) for hot Texas summers wearing cargo shorts and tee shirts? Not as a replacement of the 65 or 19 but in addition to.

Why...are you attracted!! Simply put....You're "nuts"like most of us...err..ahh ...I mean most of the J frame & revolver guys.I have a 65-3 with a trigger job.Former F.B.I. agent wants to buy it...he offered $500.I said no...but it's not because I like it!! I do "not"have any lust for any revolvers(I have 5).I'm normal....however....I do...want to handle that new Kimber! As for Glock mine is a 30s 45cal.I am looking at the Shield as another carry gun!

The 3" K-frame revolvers (like your Model 65) are some of the most practical personal defense handguns ever made. I would look no further.

I know you're right Ray. The reasonable thing to do is quit buying guns and spend the money on ammo and actually shoot the things more

if you really want a light weight "pocket" gun... I carry a 642 as a bug and really like it. The 442/642 are really great small light weight revolvers and would compliment your 65 very well.

Revolver lust is real....and normal it seems. I'm looking to add to my arsenal soon too. No auto really gets me fired up...but there are several revolvers I "must" have.

After reading this thread.....I need a 3" K-frame

.357...hmmm are there other revolver calibers? LOL just kidding. I love the round.

For many , many years the 686-3 was the primary self , home on the road protector. My wife's was a 65LS. Both with 6 rounds...

6 rounds is what I learned on 200 years ago. Since these 2 guns are locked up in semi-retirement...I've had to re-think (Sharon has as well) 5 rounds. We are getting better with them and that's a good thing.

The old man sure wants a 8 round PC .357. Want and need are 2 different things...compared to most here I am a so , so shot but of all calibers it seems the .357 seems to make the most sense to me. It ain't a lil' ol' Twinkie!! I like revolvers...old fart , but the USA says I have a choice...at least t'day.

You currently own the revolver I want. Someday...

I solve your problem by doing both- Oct thru April is auto time. May-Sept is for revolvers. They work better with my warm-weather activities. Exception being the kel-tec, the year-round "anywhere" gun.

everyday carry. Good luck.
Are the Speers GD .38+P 135gr short barrel "real hot" .38s?

6 rounds is what I learned on 200 years ago. Since these 2 guns are locked up in semi-retirement...I've had to re-think (Sharon has as well) 5 rounds. We are getting better with them and that's a good thing.

The old man sure wants a 8 round PC .357. Want and need are 2 different things...compared to most here I am a so , so shot but of all calibers it seems the .357 seems to make the most sense to me. It ain't a lil' ol' Twinkie!! I like revolvers...old fart , but the USA says I have a choice...at least t'day.
How about a 627 2.6"! What a gun but at 5'5" I would look like I had a cantolope taped to my side under my shirt

...OR somebody goes juramentado.

I doubt that the cops in Paris or San Bernardino thought they were able to fire too MANY rounds without reloading.

I switched from a pocket carried Smith 36 to a 3.5" M1911 and a Glock 19 for precisely this reason.

Not really. You'll want to get into the more "designer" type (Buffalo Bore, etc.) if you want "real hot." The Gold Dot schtick is that their projectiles perform better from a short barrel.
