Az permit wait time?
Hello. Has anyone been waiting on their Arizona carry permit lately? I was curious what the current wait time has been running, with the clock starting at the time Az DPS received the application packet.
Thank you!

There's an Arizona shooting forum that has an ongoing thread on CCW permit wait times. The latest entry reported just under 75 calendar days after receipt.
AZ Department of Public Safety states "It takes approximately 75 business days to complete all of the required qualification checks. "

Been years since my first one but 75 days sounds about right. Renewals seem faster, maybe a month or so.

Been a few years since I got mine, but I would say 75 days sounds about right too.

The fact that we don't actually NEED a permit in AZ makes the wait time seem shorter. It is recommended that you get one though, if for no other reason than to carry in neighboring states. I'm glad I have one.

There's a section for "CCW."
The O.P. is non-resident (NJ) and is most likely availing of multi-state reciprocity.
Within most of AZ, CCW permit is optional for carrying, as long as the individual is not a convicted felon, spouse beater, etc. (Read the Arizona Revised Statutes). For us residents, there are additional benefits for CCW permit including:
- No NICS background check (and thus, no wait) when purchasing firearm; just fill in 4473.
- Most FFLs give discounts to permit holders, at the very least a discounted transfer fee.
- In light of recent terrorist shooting in Florida, places that serve any alcohol in AZ are not necessarily soft targets, since permit holders can legally carry within the establishment as long as the permit holder does not consume alcohol and the place is not posted to restrict firearms possession. I've even carried concealed in a restaurant which serves alcohol, while chatting with a famous sheriff next to a couple of his deputies. One deputy even took our photo. My concealment must work really well (they're all highly observant) or I look harmless, since no one asked to see my permit.

Another issue is with an AZ CCW (resident or non-resident) you can carry near a school (not on campus) without being in violation of the Federal school zones law.
I'm going to apply soon for mine.
I grew up in AZ and still have a house there owned jointly with my sister -- the house we grew up in and inherited.

The wait is over!
My Arizona CWP arrived in today's mail, 69 days after they took possession of my application. If anyone may be using these posts as a barometer for tracking the turn around time for their permit, mine was issued 5 Aug, 63 days after they received the application.

I just ordered the packet today via email. Are they pretty quick in getting the packet mailed out?

If I remember correctly, I had the application packet within a week, definitely no more than 2 weeks.
I was impressed with the turn around time.
Best of luck to you.

Yes, they mail out the packets pretty quickly. I called the 800 number when I asked for mine and I got in the mail in a few days. That has also been the case with other guys that I know have ordered one over the phone.

It takes about that long...
I thought that sounded like a really long time but I see that in SC it's taken more than 90 days for some. I guess when it's time to renew, you'd better put it in early or there may be a gap where you can't carry.

Received the AZ permit yesterday 11/28. Paperwork was mailed in on 10/3. So that's 58 days.

Took exactly one month to receive mine, including mailing time. They seem to be on the ball over there.
