"Tonights night stand gun" might imply that you alternate guns. IMHO NOT a great idea! A night stand gun (assuming most times you are in bed you are asleep) is a last ditch SD weapon that will be grabbed when you are a bit groggy, startled and under lots of pressure. NOT a great time to have to remember which gun you have and how it operates, shoots, etc.

To me the perfect gun in a night stand would be a Revolver (such as your M10) but the SAME Revolver every single night. IMO A "night stand" gun should NOT be alternated unless of course your primary NS gun is out of commission. Just my opinion of course and YMMV.

Same gun, same light, same extra mag all positioned in the same place so that muscle memory is developed...night after night.

The last thing one needs in a moment of high stress is to have to spend precious time trying to remember what the setup du jour happened to be.

You want to be able to react as quickly as brain and motor function will allow once a situation arises. (Hopefully it never will...but it's better to have a plan and not need it than to try to put one together when every moment counts.)

I realize I'm mostly preaching to the choir here but for those who have put off having a plan and sharing it with their significant other or family, there's no time like the present.

I change night stand pistols regularly. At the moment, it's a 60-14 2 inch with original Black Talon .357 Mag rounds. I don't ascribe to the "keep the same gun because you might forget how to work it" theory. I believe the presence of mind that will allow me to go down the hall to potentially confront an intruder with a gun in my hand will also allow me to remember how it works. The one concession I make is that I don't put pistols in the rotation that have a manual safety unless the pistol can be safely stored and carried with the safety off. My 6906 is an example. On the other hand, my 1911 is not. I believe that I won't accidentally engage a double action semi auto trigger pull in a rush to grab the pistol out of the safe. The single action, I'm not so confident.

Model 360, with three speed strip reloads of .38P and a extremely bright (don't recall the lumens) LED flashlight in a biometric speed vault. Same set up for years.

Wouldn't that same presence of mind keep you finger off the1911 trigger?

Probably, but the bedside gunvault isn't that big and sometimes the pistol gets grabbed at an odd angle. I've got lots of choices, and the 1911 just isn't one of them for that purpose . . .

I guess i am the only one who keeps three handguns handy, next to where i am sleeping. I have a shotgun loaded with 12 gauge buckshot, but I keep a 45, a 38 special and a 44 special ready
next to where I sleep. My thought is what if there is more than
one intruder, and he has someone behind him, and if he has
say an AK47 or something. I figure that the intruder must not
be allowed to get inside before the shooting starts.

Many, many years ago, if I remember right, it was called Bianchi's Law.
Always carry the same gun, same holster, same place on belt, etc....
Muscles have memory.
The idea could apply to "nightstand gun". I have always wondered if
those who keep a gun, easily accessible in bedroom, shouldn't worry
about the intruder using it on them? Maybe not a concern if you are a
light sleeper. I also wonder, if those with a .357 magnum for their
"nightstand gun", have experienced the muzzle flash and noise of
shooting inside a room?

Where I live (moonbatty Massachusetts), the intruder must be inside your house before you can fire or you're the one who is going to be going to jail. You need to wait until he breaks down the door and enters. We just had a case here wherein the homeowner didn't wait long enough and now he is charged with manslaughter.

If there was any question around here, I feel confident the deputies would help me drag the body inside.

I don't have a dedicated night stand gun. When I come home from work I change and put my carry gun on the night stand....ta-da! ..... instant nightstand gun! . To that effect I also don't have a dedicated range gun.

There is definitely something to be said for keeping guns consistent for memory but it all depends on the actual guns in use. Assuming you keep them loaded.......there really isn't a big difference between keeping a Glock or say a XD. Or if you have a Walther PPQ and changed to a S&W P99, or even a Glock. Same goes for something like Beretta and a CZ or 5906. It starts to get tricky when safeties are added to the equation. Going from safety to no safety or frame mounted safety to a slide mounted one. Even revolver or DA/SA to a striker.

Of course it can be broken down even further if you use the controls. If the safety isn't needed I don't use it. Being a lefty I use the sling shot method to release the slide so the actual placement of the lever is irrelevant.

Grip angle and thickness does make a difference but it will depend on the individual person. When I wanted to try my hand at carrying a 1911 I noticed that when I drew the gun from the holster it did point slightly different direction from my Glock. If I remember correctly it pointed higher and to the left. Took some practice to get it to where I could draw and have it point straight ahead.
What's the point of this? Just thinking out loud

Me too. I used to have separate nightstand, concealed carry, and pocket for answer a knock at the door guns. I found one gun I like for all three jobs.

Having been a police firearms instructer when N frames ruled thru the last two gens of smith autos, 3 gens of glocks and rwo triggers of sigs, I have been blessed with the ability to handle most hand guns. I do recommend those less intrested in such guns to stick to one type.

When I "ungun" for the day, they go on the nightstand*. "They" are usually primary concealed carry: S&W Model 13-3 or 12-2, and backup concealed carry S&W Model 682-2. Occasionally, they are the 13-3 and the 12-2, depending what, exactly, I was doing during the day. (Some days may be more "action oriented" than others.)

You'll note that they are all S&W revolvers.

*(Actually, the K frames go in a bed rail holster, and the 642-2 goes in a lidded box on the nightstand with a UtiliTech 320 lumen flashlight.)

Two handguns stay in a lockable nightstand drawer, which is open at night. 1st to go to is a .38 snubby revolver, then a full size 9mm semi auto.

I use a Colt 1911 as a 'bedside" gun exclusively.

I also use a Colt 1911 (Commander) for EDC.

The controls are the same.

It's just silly to use a rotation for anything.

Settle on one pistol,

Truthfully I do not even understand WHY someone would want to rotate Nightstand guns............ What's the point?? It's not a gun that you use every night, it simply sits there just in case of an emergency. So what would be the impetus to constantly swap it out?

I certainly understand why someone takes different guns to the Range - but that's a different scenario. Call me boring because I use the same carry gun every day UNLESS the situation or environment dictates tha I change something. Yes I do use a more powerful and larger handgun when I am hiking or hunting in Bear Country - but if I am just going out to dinner, out to a meeting or am doing my usually routine I like to know I am wearing and carrying the same familiar gun that I understand 100% and can handle confidently no matter if it's light, dark, stressful etc.

I understand we have multiple guns and like to experience them - but IMO sometimes it pays off in the long run to be boring.

I did NOT invent the phrase "Beware The Man Who Only Owns One Gun"!

This is my truck glovebox gun. Been thinking about a duplicate with an another XC1 for the nightstand. Been thinking about it for a while... but two G19s? Geeeesh... seems a bit glockheaded. I duknow... maybe. A Colt 1911 has been on the nightstand for a lot of years. I sleep pretty well.

The nightstand is the perfect spot for my 8 shot 327 NG. Perfected with a set of Culina Birdseye combats.

Same reason as people switching carry guns. Some seasonally, some weekly.

As for the phrase "beware the man with one gun...." That may have meant something a 100 years ago but today the overwhelming majority of people who own one gun typically are not shooters and don't shoot much if ever. They bought "the one gun" just in case. Some may even have test fired it

Maybe instead of buying another G19 consider just switching the Colt and current G19. The most common use of handguns (between outside and home) is home defense, meaning THAT's where the added capacity (and XC1) is more likely beneficial. Plus...it will save you about $500.

A model 36 3" in a hollowed out book on my book case on my night stand. Walther PPQ-45 on the night stand. I also keep my carry piece in the drawer of the night stand. All loaded with Hornyday Thermo-nuclear ammo. I keep a vicious Poodle in the center of the house looking at the front, back and side doors, as well as the driveway and road. I also keep a Bichon Frize with a head like a Rottweiler at the foot of the bed. Ain't America great!

No joke here: 5 Dobie-Mastiffs and a pit bull that tries to bite everyone but us and people we formally introduce to her. They aren't on the nightstand, but at least 4 end up on the bed every night. They are up and chasing at the slightest noise. I keep a 640 on the nightstand, but it's more from habit than anything else.

I'm pretty consistent with mine.

M&P 9FS with night sights.

Federal HST 124.

Thousands of rounds with one hiccup first day I took it out...none since.

Something that a lot of people don't think about is grabbing the trigger in the dark when retrieving their HD gun in the middle of the night.

I think about it all the time, and everybody else should do the same . . .

I've worried about this. I'm divorced now and live alone. I sleep like a rock. I'll get in bed and think about rolling over and fall asleep before I get the chance. I'm honestly talking seconds from the time I lay down till I'm asleep. I've slept thru 2 hours of my bedside alarm clock going off...the alarm on my cell wakes me instantly thou.

I have great locks on my doors, and drilled holes in the concrete block on both sides of all my windows which have 1/4 eye bolts in them. I probably should get a damn security system installed. I do live in a great area, and in the 11 years I've been here there has never been so much as a car broken into.

Sorry for getting off topic.....
I have a shotgun within arms reach of my bed, and keep my EDC Glock 27 on the nightstand. Back when I was carrying a 5 shot 357 that's what stayed on the nightstand.

Regarding grabbing a gun in the middle of the night the three guns I keep there at night are holstered with a holster that
covers the trigger guard. I don't have them out of the
holster for that reason.

My nightstand gun(s) are in the small safe near the bed.

I hear this argument a lot: "When you are awoken in the middle of the night by a threat in the house, you're going to be *groggy and confused*, so make your defensive gun a simple one, like a revolver or glock".

I was once woken at 3am. Both my wife and I were sound asleep, and a crashing noise from downstairs woke us both up at the same time. While sound wasn't loud in our bedroom, the sound woke us both up. Here's what I remember: *I was not the least bit groggy*. As soon as the noise woke me up, I went from sound asleep straight to completely awake and alert, and my thought process was crystal clear. My wife was in a similar state of complete alertness.

Turns out, the large clock on the wall over our fireplace fell from it's hanger, and hit the wood floor.

In my own limited experience: no groggy, confused state when a potential threat wakes you up from a sound sleep. As long as you train with all your guns; keep whatever gun you want handy.

Prefer having plenty of capacity when I'm way from home. Along with the G19 in the glovebox is an extra 33rd factory Glock mag.

Video of the LA riots where innocent folks were surrounded by hostiles, dragged from their vehicles and savagely beaten with no police presence... those images helped shape my opinion on that.

Yep, I keep a Kel-Tec Gen 2 Sub 2000 in the back of my SUV with 2 33 round Glock Mags and a sp101 in the console... with extra speed loaders..

and of course there's what I'm carrying...

Maisie and Barley are on duty at night. They each have a bed on opposite corners of the bedroom. They don't go off any more when Bill walks out onto his deck across the street to get firewood, but let a transient doe muley or a jackrabbit cross our yard and this low rumbling growl kicks in enough to wake me. Some two-legged body in the yard fills the air with Barley's full-volume, high-pitched voice -- probably worse than a .357. Can't imagine what they'd do if somebody were actually in the house.

Three Tritium dots above me on the headboard offer a comforting night light attached to my 640 Pro. Same place, same position, every night. Yeah, chief38, I'm boring, too.

I heard it said once that you have to do a thing 10,000 times before you're good at it. I'm getting there.

I'm practiced enough -- 5 to 10 times a day -- that the sights automatically align to the target every time I bring my arm up. No thinking required.

My "night-stand" gun varies....either a 3" .38+p/.357 or a 4" .38+p/.357....Okay, so they don't vary all that much

Revolvers are just back up to the "nearby" Mossberg m500 12...
