Won't get it on board and they don't allow it. They search you going on and go through a metal detector.
Carnival allows pocket knife to a certain length, don't know about others.
Remember, you are most often cruising to another country. Their jails suck, bad.

Last cruise boat I was on earlier this year there was no searching of anything and no metal detectors to get on board. No signs prohibiting guns either. I guess it varies by cruise line.

At the terminal before you left you didn't get through any security? What port was this? What cruise line?

All cruise lines are super tight on security. I have been on many cruises and I find what you are saying, really surprising! What cruise line was it that your referring too? You go through security when you check in and you go through security every time you board the ship.

Don't do that my friend, cruises are the Bees Knees for having fun and great food! The destinations you stop at can be a lot of fun as well! Usually, everyone on a cruise, is in a good mood and partying can be great fun!

No tv. No cell phone.
Eat, drink, dance to the wee hours with my little woman. Sit on the balcony of our berth and watch the water go by. I enjoy them.
Catch a comedy show, play some games or hang out at a piano bar all night.
I could care less about any of the ports of call.

As long as CC stands for Credit Card, you'll be fine.

"As long as CC stands for Credit Card, you'll be fine" ??

I though the use of CC and cruise ships was abbreviation of "Constant Cash". I finally did a cruise a couple of years ago with a lady friend, been there, done that and believe any usage of CC does mean constant cash. Best advice, stay home, reload, go to range, you will have a better time, unless you do have a stream of constant cash.

I hate cruises, and am expected to go on another one next month. That being said, a cruise is the most inexpensive vacation I can think of.

Carnival kept my pocket knife last time on. No way they'd let a man with a gun on the boat.

Our Alaska cruise was one of the best trips we took. We had such a good time that 8 years later we drove there pulling our 5th wheel with us. I'd love to live there.

We were on a cruise about 15 years ago and I wished I had a gun.
Our luggage was slow arriving at our cabin. When it did arrive, my
wife's jewelry was missing. A Dude came to our door and identified
himself as the ship's security officer. He didn't look the part, and he
asked questions about the jewelry value, etc. I was quite uncomfortable.
He was a big guy, but I thought I could handle him with the help of
my wife. She's a scrapper. After he left I called the office. My suspicion
was correct. He was not a ship's security officer. I still don't know
exactly what he was looking for. The real security officer came and
"took a report" but that was the end of it. Our homeowner's insurance
covered the loss (reluctently).

Default Don't Do It.

I've been on many cruises and frankly, I would not go with any cruise line that didn't have really strict security.

There are a number of popular cruise stops in Mexico. Get caught there with either a gun or even ammunition and, rest assured, that cruise ship will be leaving without you while you learn to speak Spanish. Did I mention that Mexican jails are known to be rather violent and primitive? Did I mention that you just might have to satisfy other inmates' primal needs?

That my attitude for years, I had zero desire to go on a cruise!! My wife kept hinting around about wanting to go on one and I just wouldn't bite. One day a brochure for an Alaskan cruise showed up in the mail and as I picked it up and looked through it she asked, "doesn't that look interesting?"

I said, "that don't look too bad."

Wham!!! Next thing you know we're booked on a cruise. I dreaded it, complained about getting suckered in, pouted about being gone so long from home . . . . and the Alaskan cruise was the best vacation we've ever been on. So much so that we've been back for a total of 4 Alaskan cruises since.

I still won't go on a cruise going south, though.

I've been on a bunch of cruises with different cruise lines and have never not gone through a metal detector, both at the cruise terminal and when returning to the ship from port excursions . . .

Yeah I can imagine...have heard some horror stories about cruise line port of call excursions that people sign up for when they get to a destination port of call...One was of a bus trip to some mountain hide-a-way...the bad guys knew the tourist were coming, when they were coming, and hid out on the mountain road and robbed the whole bus load.....Bad guys in ports of call have all the advantages....you have squat.........

While that does suck those stories are not the norm. Over 20 million people take a cruise each year. Caribbean is the most popular with 43%

The total number of people who have died since 1979 is 172

On a cruise to the Mexican Riviera, at one of the ports, we took a bus
on a sightseeing tour. At one of the stops we saw several tourists on
horseback heading out on a trail into the hills. At the rear was a
Mexican on horseback carrying a sub-machine gun. I asked what that
was all about. Our guide said "bandidos". We passed on that option.

Uhhh, I don't think the San Antonio River Walk canal boats qualify.

I did live there...but interior Alaska about 80 miles south of Fairbanks. It do get a little cool up there. My first "trip" to Alaska was many years ago delivering a Cessna 170 to a fellow who bought it from me. It was definitely a different time. One of the best "trips" I ever did...more like an adventure. Wife wants to go on another cruise again. With side trips to McKinley Park and other places. The cruise we went on was nice. Our friends we went with was stopped before he got on the boat..He always carries a knife... and the security peopleconfiscated it before he could get on... told him they would return it after the trip. They actually sent it back to him.

Default Alaska Cruising

While the state is breathtaking and cruise amenities wonderful, I didn't care for the stops---mostly T-shirt and trinket shops no matter where you went. However, the excursion part of the trip on the Alaska Railroad was great.

Don't make my mistake. Know in advance where the gun shops and general stores are on your itinerary . You could luck into a treasure at a good price. Of course, pay by credit card and arrange to have the gun shipped to your local FFL. You could have your FFL's phone number with you so that you may have him send the required document.

Even if the cruise line agreed to hold your purchase for you until disembarkation, many cruise ports are in blue states with their wonderful "common sense" gun laws. That bargain gun could turn out to be very expensive.

Right on but first we have been on 16 cruises and on ALL we went through security including metal detectors at the initial boarding of the ship and every port call. Trying to get booze on board was verboten with most cruise companies (we utilized 3 companies) You brought it and they caught you it was stored until you got off on the last day!

As far as Alaska, we did the land and sea one with the Princess line. (a 16 day cruise) Of all our cruises including 2 Panama Canal crossings this was our favorite. The land part of this adventure was a few nights in different hotels and ridding long distances on the Alaskan Railroad in observation cars. On the ship we also spent a few hours right off of a calving glacier. Let me tell you that is impressive and also very loud. Like a 12 Gauge going off, you do not get that effect sitting home watching a show on TV.

The cruise itself was great but this cruise was sponsored by the National Corvette Museum which we are longtime members. There were over a hundred Corvette enthusiasts and engineers from both Bowling Green and Detroit and many special things were set up because we were a large group.

What, don't they shoot skeet off the fantail anymore?
I saw them doing that on an old episode of the Love Boat.
Oh wait, that was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
Personally, cruises don't float my boat either.

We try to do one cruise a year on Carnival. CAUTION: Never ever try to board with a gun, a knife or even one round of ammunition. Couple of years ago we were sitting in a lounge having an adult beverage and struck up a conversation with another couple. The guy looked like he had been through the wringer. As things progressed he explained how he had just finished having a long chat with ship security after they X-rayed his luggage and had found one round of rifle ammo. His story was the round had been inadvertently left in the bottom of a bag that he usually took hunting. As side note, before my first cruise there was some apprehension about if I would enjoy it, but that quickly vanished. AND only book the shore excursions through the cruise line. hardcase60

I think that if I was to take a cruise would be one of the 7 day cruises up the Rhine River from Amsterdam up to where ever it ends

Took a five day winter voyage on the Alaska Marine Highway. Arrived with no reservations, and with no berths available. After they squeezed my car on sideways, they suggested I sleep outdoors on the observation deck.
Electric heaters on the ceiling made it comfy, with plenty of fresh air, and the best views aboard.

I have been on many cruises with several lines. Security is always tight. There are metal detectors but you are missing them. Luggage is scanned and x-rayed coming aboard and coming back on the ship pockets empty and go through a scanner. If anyone does not remember all that that had to many cerveza at the cantina.

I enjoy them but have done the very last Caribbean cruise. Sort of worn out on those. I did the Alaskan cruise and it is fantastic. I would go tomorrow if I could.

Is the security imposed on them by TSA?

I went on a cruise a long time ago (early 90s). No security at all then, just walk onto the boat and show them your ticket.

I do not recall seeing TSA but lots of cops, harbor police, and customs agents. I have seen people trying to bring dope on board hauled off to the local jail. More than once.

A buddy had several bottles of high dollar scotch stolen by ships personnel once so be careful. The help ain't all models of integrity and the last few years seems to be getting worse.

Lots of them. Juneau, Kechikan, Anacortes, Seattle, and several other smaller ones. No searches of any kind - American Cruise Lines.

Yeah, that's kind of like a bus tour or Amtrak. My parents cruised the Mississippi with American. Leave from the U.S. and don't port anywhere not in the U.S., and you're good. One foreign port, and security ramps up.

We went on one this spring, boarded in Valparaiso Chile, ports of call in Chile, Argentina, the Falklands and Uruguay. The ship had metal detectors on re-entry, and the Nations we entered had them upon entry.
Personal bottles of Alcohol were only allowed if you paid a tariff/tax [the boat is there to sell you booze, not watch you drink yours and this is clearly stated in their regs]. It would be tough to imagine a better vacation than cruising the antarctic peninsula and we would love to return.

I always go diving when we go on cruises, so my dive knife goes in the dive bag with all of my gear. Out of 7 or 8 cruises, only once on Carnival did they pick it up with scanner or x-ray. Even then, they just took it away from me when I came on board and gave it back when ever I went ashore. At least I had it with me when I would have needed it. I didn't care when I was aboard anyway. It's a 4" fixed blade titanium that is razor sharp and it made me feel a lot better wandering around some of the third world cities they pass off as cruise destinations.

Years ago, I took the family on a Disney cruise to the Bahamas.

I had a cigar punch like this in my pocket. I never got it back.
