Rastoff's Challenge IV- Timed Shooting
Actually timed shooting with precision.
If you haven't tried any of the other challenges, here's links to all of them:
Rastoff's Challenge- Dropping the Gauntlet
Rastoff's Challenge II
Rastoff's Challenge III - Different Positions
They are more challenging than they look and Challenge II is really the easiest.
Well, a lot of people have complained that my original challenge wasn't a decent depiction of self-defense shooting. In truth it's not. Even so, I believe that accuracy is just as important to self-defense shooting as speed or shooting while moving. Yeah, imagine that, being able to actually hit the intended target, crazy huh?
There is value in being able to shoot quickly too. Let's face it, if you don't shoot before the other guy, he just might get you first. So, I've created another challenge. This time I'm adding time pressure.
Here is the criteria:
This is 20 shots, all from the ready position and all fired as controlled pairs.
5 controlled pairs from 5 yards. 2 seconds for each pair.
5 controlled pairs from 7 yards. 2.3 seconds for each pair.
To be successful, all shots must be in the 10 ring of a B-27 target. If you don't have one of these (really common and available at any gun store) I've attached a target that is the same size. If you use the attached target, all shots must be within the black.
Here is my first try at this:
That one shot in the 9 was the first shot of the last pair from 7 yards. Obviously I need to do it again.
So, will you try it? No one who complained that my first challenge didn't include time tried the challenge II which did include time. Will you try this one? I hope you will. It's more challenging than it looks.
EDIT: For some reason the attachment looks almost all black. I assure you it isn't. If you download it you'll see that it's a black and orange target on a white background.

I tried the timed challenge today with my range Officer .45. Didn't pass it, but didn't do too badly. I had 2 outright misses and another couple of "leaners" on the line. I meant to save the target, but it went missing. (Freudian slip?) I'll try it again, even though speed shooting isn't really my thing. Usually the fastest I shoot is bullseye rapid fire strings, which are 5 shots in 10 seconds. I have, however, been trying the course of fire for my local combat league, which calls for strings as fast as 6 shots in 5 sec from low ready. I did manage a 99 on a 50ft NRA timed fire target with the Range Officer, but I won't continue the tradition of posting totally unrelated targets. I see the other tradition of posting no targets, all the while implying that the challenge is far beneath you, is alive and well.

I'm still working through that first untimed one. Should be done by Christmas . . .

ALL RIGHT!!! Another challenge that I probably will not be able to do.
I have tried the first challenge 40, yeah, 40 times and haven't nailed it yet. Horrible trigger control. I learned that from shooting the first challenge. 800 rds. and no go.
I have posted a few targets but stopped because somehow they all look....similar.
But I have fun trying.
I"ll give this one a try, too.
And Rastoff, please don't feed the trolls. You have more class than that.

I'll try this one this weekend.
Rastoff,
By ready position, do you mean aimed in and ready to fire?
If I don't hear back from you, I'll do it from a low ready. Also, I'll video it since I like to do that sort of thing.

Absolutely not. The ready position as used in pistol shooting, is both hands on the gun, but held at about 45 deg to the ground like this:
It doesn't have to be as low as this, but certainly not pointed in.
There are all kinds of "ready" positions depending on who's talking. There's low ready, high ready, compressed ready, retention ready, ad nauseam. The point of this exercise is not holstered and not pointed in.
Personally, I think holding the gun just 1" below your line of sight is not within the intent of the exercise. But this is an "on your honor" thing so, shoot how you feel is right to you. The idea is to improve our shooting so, make it a useful practice session not just something to show us on the internet.

Sounds good. I'll do what I'm used to, and that's aimed at the base (feet) of the target....basically 45* angle down. I'll post a video.....thanks Buddy!!

Nice shooting Bob O. I watched the video and you have good form.
Anyone who watches the video will see that the times are extremely generous. In fact, the extra .3 seconds for the 7 yard line are completely unnecessary.
EDIT: Bob O, I tried to send you a PM. Either clean out your PMs or shoot me an email at [email protected]
